In fact, I am unable to remember the llast time there was a llama sighting at an EDA gathering. Unfortunately, this bad omen can mean only one of two things: either the world is coming to an end OR that real short hairstyle with the lone braid or "tail" is coming back into fashion! Either way, prepare yourselves for the worst! :-) Anyway, I've gotten many requests for details about the Nashville gatherings, so here goes. First of all it seems everyone down there (including Mr. BB) agreed that Chris Moynihan's 18-word name for the event was the best one. Unfortunately, no one remembers what it was. I arrived Saturday evening and checked into the lovely Days Inn and met up with Chris, Dennis & Carol, Katie and Sarah. We went to a place called Demo's, home of Liquid Sugar for dinner along with Tammy, Erica the great Puddini and her friend Katie. Dennis' bus driver had told him Demo's was the best restaraunt in town and well, it was pretty good, though I suspect the bus driver's brother may be part owner or something. After dinner we wanted to go clubbing, so after the usual 45 minutes of standing-on-a-street-corner-discussing-the-plan, we headed to Graham Central Station, a 3 floor club with an Elvis impersonator outside and a DJ dressed like Roy Orbison inside in the disco room dubbed Bellbottoms. It was here that we spent a couple hours dancing to Le Freak, Funkytown, and - well, you get the idea. There were even go-go cages and a booth that's backlit so you can only see the sillhouette of the person dancing inside. Pretty cool, but none of us dared it. The rooftop was pretty cool too, with a nice view of the river and of the Bell South building, which we dubbed the Batman Building. Sunday morning, those of us at the beautiful Days Inn had a mouth-watering (not) continental breakfast consisting of cold cereal, mini muffins, and sticky buns and later 7 of us squeezed into Sarah's Mercedes with no air conditioning to go to the Riverfront park where the EDA gathering was held. I am happy to report that there were at least 30 people there - many faces I hadn't seen in years such as Larry, Gerry, Andrea, Courtney and many I had never met but had emailed with over the years. Somebody had mistakenly ordered an extra hot day (bastards!) so we may have been less bubbly and exuberant than usual, but we did have fun roping Woody, roping Dennis, watching Chris and Dennis try and rope each other, paying homage to Erica's yellow hat-in-the-tree and other similar diversions. Eventually, about half the group left to go eat (the other half had brought food to the park) and the rest of us went back to our rooms (at the exquisite Days Inn) to change for the show. When we got to the very turquoise colored venue, there was already a line of about 20 people. The sun was still beating down so Dennis had the idea to write everyone's name down in order so they could go stand on the other side of the street where it was shadier without losing their place. Of course, the way Dennis chats with EVERYONE he meets, by the time he made it to the end of the line, there was only about another 20 minutes of sun left! Standing in line was fun, though, and everyone was really friendly and got to know each other. The film crew was out there getting footage of us and a woman was interviewing individuals about their favorite Jewel song, how long they've been on the list, etc. Dennis gave out free EDAF t-shirts and guitar picks. Just before we were let inside, we were given free bottles of cold water by Mr. BB & crew, which was extremely nice and much appreciated. The show itself has already been covered pretty well, I think, so I won't get too into that. Someone posted the other day asking if the title "This Way" was the actual title or a rumor - Jewel herself said that was to be the title. She didn't explain the meaning or anything, unfortunately. Also, as far as the sound of the new songs, they ranged from very slow to rocking and some were slightly country but good (I'm not a country fan and I liked them all). I got the feeling when she made the remark about her label worrying she was going to release a country album that she actually wasn't going to, but it was a little unclear the way she phrased it so I guess we'll have to wait and see. I looooved the New Wild West song - that could definitely be a hit and I hope it gets released as a single. The highlight for me was definitely Unsung in Your Eyes. I've been hoping for that song to resurface for years as some of you know, so I made Dennis request it (me being too shy). Jewel asked him to repeat the request and then to my amazement she started playing it. Of course, she couldn't remember the words, but....oh well, it's a start! After the show, we again did the usual stand-around-for-two-hours-trying-to-make-a-plan thing. Apparantly, Sunday night after 10 is not a big eating time in Nashville, so we had to rely on the locals (Erica & Katie & Kara?) to figure out where to go for a late dinner. A lot of people had to leave directly after the show, but those who stayed ended up splitting up, half going to SATCO and half to the Sunset Grill. I was in the Sunset Grill group (there were about 11 of us) and what we didn't know was that they closed at 11:00. We arrived at about 10:45 but they were kind enough to let us in anyway. We had an absolutely delicious meal, after which we lost a few more people and the remainder went to Andrea & Mel's room at the splendiforous Days Inn to continue our silliness. For some strange reason, I heard the phrase "Dennis, you're mean, get out of my room" about 25 times (but he just wouldn't go!!). Finally, we all got tired and went back to our rooms and that was that. A great time was had, but still, there were NO FREAKIN' LLAMAS! So I was thinking a little bit here. Jewel did Louisa in Nashville completely out of the blue. I don't think any of us yelled it out, I didn't hear it at least. She couldn't remember Carnivore which she played a couple times in 99 and a bunch of others, but remembered Louisa perfectly which hasn't been played since when? 96? 95? I'm not sure. I think it's quite possible that Louisa was recorded for the new album then. What do you all think? Well, I'm jealous of the Nashbash EDAs, but today I had a totally retro EDA experience, without any EDAs! Here is the tale... See, my work caused me to unexpectedly go to Stephenville today. Well, let me first explain the non-jewel related history on this. Stephenville is bad luck for me... Every time I've been there something has gone wrong... I've lost my wallet there, had a fuel line bust, covering me with diesel, and back in high school I had my first argument with my girlfriend of the time there. (and I learned the correct answer to the question, "Does this dress make me look fat?" ) Believe me, the answer is not "Well, babe, I don't think it is the dress that is doing it".... Not even in jest :::shudder:::: Anyway, like I said, bad luck... So, on the way I kept wondering what would happen this time. Time passed, the scenery was nice (Stephenville is in North Central Texas, so the oaks are bit bigger, there is actually water in the stock tanks, and the grass is even green in places!) Just before I got into Stephenville I passed a game ranch, and sticking out of the bushes I saw what appeared to be the less attractive half of a Llama (well, I dunno if there is an attractive side to a llama, but the rear end is all I saw in this case). Well, of course the Llama made me smile, think of crazy EDAs, and of course Ty and Jewel came to mind as I drew close to town. Naturally, I did not see Jewel or Ty (they're prolly not even in the state right now), but thinking of the chance of seeing them was pleasant anyway. For those of ya'll that haven't had the chance to take a psychotic tour of strange towns just because someone mentioned it in a song, or blessed enough to be from Texas; Stephenville is a nice little college town, with tall shade trees, narrow streets surrounded by small rolling hills, and thick patches of oaks and brambles. It has quite a bit of old (old for Texas) architecture in the main part of town... rather decent place. Anyway, as I'm driving through, I notice a billboard for a steakhouse named Woody's "Woody's- The Best Steaks and More!" Now, of course I had to wonder why a cow, even a plywood one, would sell steaks... seems somewhat brutal... but then again, that's just me. Well, I was there a bit early, so I stopped to get a bite to eat, and was halfway finished with my meal when the thought stuck me. I was eating hotdogs! (well, chilidogs)... At that point if poltize had been walking by, I would not have been surprised in the least. So, I picked up the truck I was there for, and headed into Dublin to pick up a trailer (Dublin is another small town close to Stephenville, also it is where Dr. Pepper was originally made... They still make it there in fact, but with the original recipe. They still use Sugar instead of Corn sweeteners.. just a side note) On the way (still within twenty miles of Stephenville) I pass Jewell Cemetery, which I had to laugh about, but I swear to you... Not five miles down the road is "Murray Memorial Cemetery"! The Circle was complete! (okay, so I still did not find anything linking Jewel with an Alien invasion plot, but close enough!) Anyway, it was an interesting trip at least.. thought I would shareRowdius - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Aug 2001 19:52:38 EDT From: RunTontoRun@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Jewel in Nashville Return-path: From: RunTontoRun@aol.com Full-name: RunTontoRun Message-ID: Date: Wed, 8 Aug 2001 17:47:55 EDT Subject: Jewel in Nashville To: RunTontoRun@aol.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" X-Mailer: AOL 6.0 for Windows US sub 10528 X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative by demime 0.97c X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain http://hometown.aol.com/saddleemmup/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Aug 2001 21:51:36 EDT From: Jenjk128@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Jewel Album Release Date Someone asked why the album is being released in November, when it is already completed. In addition to all the extra things that need to be done, November is a great month to release an album. Having worked in music retail, I have noticed that a lot of artists hold off until the holiday season to release an album. Every year there is a "Super Tuesday" on which a large amount of big artists release their albums. Spirit was released on this day. My guess is that the record label is holding off to release it during the most profitable time.
