Anyway...I have so many souvenirs! 3 different t-shirts, a brand-spankin-new woody pin, guitar picks, and best of all...my very own Spirit bucket hat (which I had to sneak out of a days inn, then back into another days inn, then out again. It was worth it. So yeah, I had an awesome time. Even standing in the sun for 3 hours prior to the concert was a helluva lot of fun. The concert was amazing...more detail... - ---Does Anyone Believe In Love (such a pretty song...she *supposably* wrote this in New Orleans, too...it made it better to see it live) - ---Jesus Loves You (The first line goes, "You say that Jesus loves you...well, what about me," and the chorus goes "I wanna see, I wanna see, What can you do for me." There's also a line in there that goes something like "It's not what I can do for anybody, it's what your body can do for me..." That's all I remember. I liked it...it had that whole I'm Sensitive/Pieces of You cute sarcastical thing going...) - ---Grey Matter (Andrea yelled it out very excitedly, and we got all giddy when she actually started playing it...that girl's been trying to hear this song live forever, it was awesome =) I'm so glad I got to hear it with you girlie =) =)) - ---Carnivore (Jeweljk.com called this a "hilarious duet attempt with EDA Jamie Matthews"...um, first of all, I only have one t in my last name =), secondly, it was definitely an attempt...I felt really silly. She asked for requests and Jon yelled out "Carnivore!" from the back and I was like "yeah, Carnivore!" and she said she didn't know how to play it, so I yelled out "C, Em!" and she said "You wanna get up here and sing it?" And I was like, "um nooooo", but then She said "Get up here" so i did. First thing she said was "Oh wow, you're wearing your little EDA shirt!" and she lifted it to see it better, and I got quite embarassed and put my hand over my face, and I was giggling, and she said "Don't cry on me now, girl" and patted my arm. I wasn't gonna cry, but I was like "okay =)" So I sang one line with her but I was quite away from the mic. Then I forgot the words...I don't know how that happened...and when I started remembering them again...she kinda gave up. She was funny though..."Oh, that's brilliant...I probably thought this was so poetic, too..." It was awesome. =)) - ---Little Sister (perty...I was still basking, so I don't really remember this as much as I could...) - ---Sometimes It Be That Way (awesome awesome awesome...made Corey happy, although she forgot Jewel sang it about 20 min later =)) - ---Stephenville (still a good song) - ---Rosy & Mick (so sweet) - ---Break Me (the lyrics were never really that amazing to me, but the way she sings it...wow...) - ---Cold Song (did her whole "this is my deepest song" bit...as though we've never heard it ;-)) - ---Race Car Driver (she told the story for God's Gift To Women with this...wierd...) - ---Does Anyone Believe In Love (still pretty, and her and Ty are adorable) - ---A Long Slow Slide (this was really really good...we actually heard her singing it earlier during soundcheck while we were outside the building, I like it alot) - ---Fly To Me Angel (Although her voice was a little cracky, I thought this was the prettiest I'd ever heard her yodel because she cracked and it seemed to have more definition. I don't know...I just thought it was perty.) - ---The New Wild West (This song is GREAT. I was truly impressed with it, and I haven't been truly impressed with a new Jewel song in years. I can't remember the words, but I can remember the guitar chords and the way she sings it! It was awesome. =)) - ---Life Uncommon (eh, whatever...I wasn't too excited about hearing this...) - ---Tenderness (this was okay...I wasn't really impressed with it, but it was kinda pretty...) - ---Morning Song (hehehe...it's morning song, what else can you say) - ---Near You Always (awwwwww...=)) - ---Louisa & Her Blue Guitar (oh my god, is all I can say for this. I do believe I may have crushed poor Courtney's hand. I can't believe she sang this...it was awesome...amazing, and she played it even though her fingers were "chopped meat" *sigh* =)) - ---Unsung In Your Eyes (immediately after Louisa, I swear I almost cried...it didn't matter that she couldn't remember the words, she played guitar and I yelled the words to her and she repeated/sang them...*sigh* =)) - ---Everything Breaks (um, she played it with different chords and basically left out the second verse...but she tried.) - ---You Were Meant For Me (it was pretty...it was You Were Meant For Me) - ---Who Will Save Your Soul (it was actually really nice to play this...cuz she played it normal again, and I missed that) - ----Angel Standing By (beautious...even though her voice was shot to hell by then) It was awesome...3rd row (1st row unreserved) center...to see Jewel...in Nashville. Oh, and I sure didn't feel good about paying $25 for that shirt...I just wish I could've stopped myself... I miss my EDAs...I love you guys...and, Dennis, I think you're okay, I guess. I must go to work...everyone keep posting, I wanna hear what everyone has to say. =) ===== Jamie Mathews http://jamieangel.tripod.com/ http://www.mp3.com/jamiemathews http://www.geocities.com/jeweltabs Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! I know everyone's already posted but this is the first time I've had time to post. I got back to Kansas City at 11:00 last night (Monday) after my Dad and I spent the day at Vanderbilt. I read all the posts and decided to give my take tomorrow (which would be today... wow I'm a genius) Anyways.. I got to the venue kinda late-- 5:45, but still ended up getting really good seats.. last row, but it was only the 5th row, so it shows you how small the venue really was. We actually got lucky to get those seats. I ran to the bathroom (ewwww, it was gross ... hehe) at 7:20 and RAN back out when the soundcheck guy came onstage, only to wait another 25 minutes for Jewel, but that's perfectly okey dokey. Definitely worth the wait. Here are my highlights of the evening, in no particular order: ~Ty Murray! how cute was that? He came up onstage and they kissed and she was so giggly and cute. awwww... but i'm a hopeless romantic, so of course that was a huge highlight. ~Jewel talking to us so much. That was almost the best part. She is such a crack up-- even my dad was laughing at what she was saying. it was great.. she made it so comfortable. ~Jamie and the rest of us attempting Carnivore. haha ~Me yelling "absence of fear" at the top of my lungs... it's my favorite of all time-- too bad she doesn't KNOW IT!! Haha.. i had the CD, coulda held the lyrics up for her. oh well. ~the encore-- i knew she'd sing angel standing by eventually.... it's my lullaby so it made for a great ending. ~standing next to "the jag" that at the time I did not know "belonged" to Jewel. I was amazed-- "who here drives a JAG?!?!?!" ~sitting next to shana and liz-- you guys were awesome.. thanks for the ride to the hotel :) if i look at miami of ohio, i'll look you up! ~seeing big blue again-- i thought it went into retirement.... ~chatting w/ jewel at the end. i knew we shoulda waited. there weren't too many people, she coulda done some autographs, but that's alright-- i didn't want to be the pushy one :) but we were respectful and instead flashed a million light bulbs in her face. ~the way she kept going and going and going. she was the freaking enigizer bunny. every song i was thinking "this'll be her last" but she didn't stop! 25 songs and 2 and 1/2 hours! incredible.... The whole night was absolutely amazing. i love the new songs, especially long slow slide and new wild west. the long slow slide really spoke to me w/ the lyrics. I can't remember them specifically but i loved them. I know i probably won't get the chance to do something like this again- and i'm still surprised that i went. It was just a wonderful night! That's my story and i"m sticking to it! ~Rachel~ the overdressed angel-- I DIDN'T KNOW what to wear!!! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Aug 2001 19:06:28 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Re: [EDA] What songs would you like? I agree with Eric here. When I first heard this at MrBB's bungalo last summer (the Radio Shack show), I was stunned. It was oldtime Jewel. I thought for sure she'd sing it at the Nashville show Sunday night. While it's quite obvious that Carnivore will not be on the new CD (I'm bummed), I am certainly putting Violet Eyes near the #1spot on my wish list. Howdy ya'll, Just got in from Nashville. WOW, what a great show, and a great city to have it in. I kinda wanted to show Mr. Ty to the door, cause I knew she would wanna get away from us to be with him. But I too am a hopeless romantic, and I thought it was pretty cool when they made out...lol. I'm surprised I didn't get hassled by any cops; very big plus in my book. LOL, I stayed stoned the whole time in Nashville, got drunk Monday night. Oh yes, thanks Dennis for the great talk, and the Sunset Grill was great. Alan was the MAN with the water. It was good to meet so many other EDA's, but I don't like being stuck in the middle of crowds, so I sat on the side with my guest...and kept sneakin round the building for a quick toke or two ;) I got to sit up in the balcony instead of at the back! Even Courtney Love wants out."The music insider was describing what happened when Universal/MCA and Polygram music groups merged two years ago, creating one mega-conglomerate. When Universal Music emerged, entire labels disappeared. Label employees were sacked and artists were dropped from talent rosters. One of those fired was label president Danny Goldberg, who had signed Steve Poltz to Mercury. Eventually Mercury itself was dissolved. Some Mercury acts were folded into the Island/Def Jam label. Others were dropped."Mercury ceased doing current artists," said Poltz. "They basically became a label for their back catalog."Poltz's contract was absorbed by Island."I was in record label hell. Everyone that signed me [at Mercury] was fired. Probably for signing me," he joked. The Rugburns founder and Jewel collaborator only recorded one album for Mercury, One Left Shoe, released in March of 1998. It was not a big seller."It's certified triple tinfoil," Poltz joked in January 1999. At the time Poltz seemed confident. According to his manager Robert Duffy, he was signed to a three-record deal with Mercury. He expected that the second album would be out by October of last year. It was never released.Poltz said he knew things weren't going right at Polygram when his career was assigned to the same executive who looks after Korn. "My A&R guy, bless his soul, was a great guy. But he signed Korn. We had nothing in common. Basically we just didn't speak the same language."After months of legal maneuvers and negotiation, Poltz says he has finally been emancipated from his ties to Island."I told them to put out the record or let me out.... I finally had to hire an attorney to let them know I was serious."He said money from his exit settlement allowed him to start up his own record label. "It's called 98 Pounder Records. The first record will be out in February.... I'm just gonna sign me and the Rugburns.""There were a lot of baby bands that got dropped," said one record industry employee about the fallout of the Universal merger. "Dishwalla had a number-one song on the alternative charts, and they got dropped. Sprung Monkey had a deal with Hollywood/Uni and that ended.""I'm sure he was paid well," said one insider. "I hear he's got 50 other songs that are ready and floating around."According to Poltz, he has 75 new songs. In the last two years Poltz and a friend have put out two separate compilations of twisted answering machine tunes. He says, "Now I can do a new answering machine CD and not deal with any of that crap."Steve Poltz appears at the Belly Up Tavern August 30.-- Ken Leighton While Steve Poltz was well known locally for his work with the Rugburns and tweaked singalongs like "Hitchhiker Joe" and "Football Tonight," his first taste of international recognition was due to his former girlfriend. He cowrote Jewel's breakout hit "You Were Meant for Me," which was on Jewel's debut album. That CD, Pieces of You, sold ten million copies and allowed Jewel to headline her own international tour. Jewel invited Poltz to perform in her band for that 1999 tour. But Jewel's box office is not what it used to be. Ticket sales for her first hometown shows this year -- August 19 and 20 at Humphrey's -- are not what was expected."I heard sales are way off, so she's thinking about changing the show from solo acoustic to adding a band," said an unnamed talent manager.A Humphrey's spokeswoman said that she had heard the rumor that Jewel might add a backup band, but at press time it was still being billed as a "solo acoustic" act.-- Ken Leighton That's all...
