She did compare it to a POY type song where parts are sort of going to make people think or people are going to take it wrong. Parts of that song are humorous....very true yet very straight forward type of lyrics really amazing. She did say that the people at the Dell party had taking the song the wrong way and didn't respond (but we sure did make up for that :-) ) AMAZING!!!! I would bet this song on the cd--maybe the live version or maybe she recorded this one with some back up band in the studio. Also the New Wild West song is same lyrically WOW!! I can NOT think of any parts though. Maybe thats is why there was an article a little while back about recording an "edgy" album.... this are pretty edgy lyrics. She also performed this song at a AIDS benefit not too long ago and that it was at the same exact place the "MODELING CONVENTION" was held at where POY bombed and no ONE clapped no ONE took it right and the NY Times wrote her up as homophobic and when she told the story -- I was here 6 years ago this same exact spot and I sang Pieces of You and I got to faggot and and forks dropped and no one clapped when I was finished -- and Jewel found this story fitting and ironic that here she is 6 years later established and fame and fortune and being asked to do these sorts of things... and thinking she was a stand up comedian now at this one and this some what older crowd did not have a clue so in turn she was pretty bummed about not accomplishing what she hoped 2x at the same place and Ty being in the corner slapping and rubbing his head like (Oh My....) could not believe she did this. While Jewel is up there cracking herself up. Does this make sense. I am not sure if she did Jesus loves You then the story or vice versa but all in all this song is the same exact vibe as that song with the same reaction from its "sister" song. Please if anyone remembers more fill in so I can run it up in my head. Okay, so here is the full story... be prepared to read caus eim gonna get detailed :) *cracks fingers and prepares to type after a 5 hour drive* First off if you want to see the sirt from the show go here http://communities.msn.com/JewelyBug/jewelstuff.msnw then click on the pictures. for awhile you will see small guys cause they arent on the page, but clock them individually, theya re there i promise! Well, I arrived in nashville at about 1 pm (central)and went straight to belmont university, wher ei had rented a room. I was very excited because not only was the price right, but 12th street was right behind it, an di could just shoot down there and not be lost! When i got there, i was told to go get the keys from the security desk "check in is at 2, but don't worry, we aren't strict on it, and we will leave the keys with security the night before" well i got there after driving 5 hours, in a car with a broke AC. and the little security person ( who was playing poppit from pogo.com) said she didnt ahve my keys. WEll i was to tired to wwait... so i ended up at the days in abomut 6 blocks from the venue. I drive by the venu before going to the hotel, just to see what it looked like. i was quite surprised, because it was on a little corner, by a huge parking lot. It looked quiet, and off in the middle of absolutly nowhere ( wasnt realy in the middl eof nowhere, but it certainly was a lil hole in the wall) I saw Alan and the rest of the crew unloading all the sound equipment. Then i drove to the gathering. i drove by the spot andrea had mentioned, and saw about 20 people sittin garound talking. i assumed that was the group... but kept driving. I was tired, i was sweaty, and prolly not the most pleasent smelling person to hug and meet :) though ti would spare everyone. So i went ot the hotel to crash for an hour nap. I got to the venue at about 5:10 central time, and there was already 100 people there! lol. I saw a lot of people from Central park (Gina, Chrissy, Dennis, Amy) and i met a few new people too. Shannon, and her cincinnati area friends, the girls on the stools next to me (sorry can't remember names) the two girls from texas i met outside before going in, (damn im awful with names) Alan! gosh what a great guy. Jason, i think was your name... made the trip twice, wrote the set down. I wanted to know who a few people are.... help me out... the guy who Dennis said is "older than dirt" who has been on the list forever, but just met dennis. and who was the person who sat on the left of dennis for the show? Tammy?????? also, I missed Lee and Larry where were you guys?? :( i really wanted to meet you. Dennis started making a list of people who were showing up, so we didnt have to stand in the heat and sun 2 inches from each other. We signed the list, and could go and sit on the curb, or wherever we wanted. Great idea DEnnis... way to take charge! lol. Anyway, i was on my way to McDonalds to get a soda before i passed out, and was stopped to be interviewd. she said it was for a new movie they were working on, and jewel wanted this even recorded to see everyone. So they taped us all in line, and talking, hugging, laughing and having fun. So she asked me my name.... wher i was from, what my favorite songs are... "Near you Always, who will save your soul... and I sang Hands at my graduation ceremony... i really like that song as well" She replied.. really? will you sing for her? and pointed me to the camera.I stared at her... blank as anything.... "Gon on... give us a song so she can hear." I know i blushed and looked at the ground shocked beyond belief..."No... that's ok..." HOW STUPID AM I!!!!!! ( please don't answer that or send me email reguarding how dumb i really am ;o) So, i ran and got a soda... and came back just intime for them to let us in( about time :) it was HOT! So we got in, and i sat in the stools ont he side, which were very very nice, i was above all the heads ( im only 5'2") and had a more than perfect view. i sat and talked to the people around me, and my mom. SHe isn't a jewel fan... actually doesn't care to much for her. But she said she had fun.. and she was happy to go with me cause it made me happy!(boy did we show her how cool Jewel is!) So, well over an hour after sitting in a dark room, cramped and sitting on each others laps a guy come up, and wants us to practice clap for jewel for the guy recording it. So we clapped ( soo loud for only 200 people!!!) i was impressed! so he said Jewle on on her way... and would be here in a second. I jumped up and bought a 25 dollar shirt... OI!!!! how expensive *mumbles* She hadn't even left yet. So about 10 minutes later she comes on stage, and immediatly starts playing something... looks up and smiles "Hi!"... 1. Does Anyone Believe In Love- very very nice... the storm came in just as she started, and thunder rolled in the back. she asked the sound guy if it was picked up on the mics and i guess he said yes cause she laughed "au naturel" 2. Jesus Loves You *New Song*- very nice. Nothing like i expect. She told us about how the DEll family of Dell computer of Fame company ( long story) hired her to play at their valentine party. i can't recall many lyrics... but what sticks out the most "my ta ta's on TV" heh... ta ta's... anyway.... sarcasitc lil song. 3. Grey Matter - at request by a very excited EDA. followed by many more requests she said she spent the last 3 hours in her hotel room learning songs she knew we would request... becasue we always do. Someone shouted martial Carnival..." Oh yeah, now you guys are just showing off... *mocking voice* sing marital carnival."I know you only sang that song once at Anaheim, see I know" 4. Carnivore - only the virst verse and a bumpy chorus. she asked who knew the words, and asked an EDA to come up ( was your name jamie... maybe) she got frustrated i think... and switched to.... 5. Little Sister 6. Sometimes It Be That Way - whcih i shouted for! yeah!!!! *dances* 7. Stephenville - she said it was new and a few EDA's whispered.. that isnt new... and she looked up"shhhh.. well don't you know everything..." 8. Rosy & Mick 9. Break Me (wow) 10. Cold Song where she reminded us it's a polka 11. Race Car Driver She told the story abomut this. Much more dtailed than i have ever heard it. I love listening to her stories. She did this song really well... stronger than usual IMHO. At this point i saw the door open and there was a cute cowboy with a white hat on.... Ty. I smiled cause she obviously hadnt seen him. after the song... he snuck into the front row. When she finished, she turned to get the other guitar, and he requested a song. I guess she knew his voice and without turning around, she turned her head and smiled "What ever you want sailor" she smiled and goes "how di dyou get here.. what are you doing here... " she was shocked. She giggled, and smiled, and smiled and smiled... :) "was I smiling this much before?" then Chrissy yells to ty to go kiss her and Jewel shouts back "Dont you boss us around!" and Ty got up and hugged her forever... and they kissed like 3 times. So she comes back to the mic "i gotta play this one again..." 12. Does Anyone Believe in Love 13. A Long Slow Slide *New Song* 14. Cowboy Waltz 15. New Wild West *New Song* 16. Life Uncommon with guitar... i have personally never heard it this way very beautiful 17. Tenderness *New Song* 18. Morning Song "let the phone ring, let's go back to bed..." she looks up... "well at least i had the momentum with me....what is it... " with queue from us... she proceeded 19. Near You Always (my fav) 20. Louisa & her Blue Guitar 21. Unsung In Your Eyes (she tried --had the chords--was humming -- going in right direction then EDA's I believe Jamie was yelling all the lyrics...) 22. Everything Breaks 23. YWMFM 24. WWSYS "i guess i should finish the night with tmy first real song" followed by a standing ovation ( of course) ENCORE Angel Standing By "im going to try to do this... but my voice is a little... i dont know what.. something unattractive" Then i said goodbye to the people i knew, and headed back to the hotel. i was on a complete high... i was so excited and hyper i didnt think i would eer sleep again. I even woke up that way!!!! It all sank in this morning ya know... how incredible. P.S. sorry bomut all the typos... im to dang tired for all this ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 18:40:03 EDT From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] nashville show Hi Well I've been excitedly reading all these posts about the Nashville show!! And I was just wondering - can anybody tell us whether or not our "fears" (in my case they really are fears) about Jewel releasing a country album are founded. I mean songs with titles like The New Wild West and such sound quite country - is that how they actually sound? And are the songs (lyrically) very sincere like the Spirit songs, or very kind of hard-edged/sarcastic like a lot of the unreleased songs she's done. And did she have any kind of a band or was it just her and her guitar? if anybody could answer these questions I'd be extremely grateful! thanks Steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 18:38:44 -0400 From: "Amanda" Subject: [EDA] Nashville and MP3's Hey, if anyone stayed after the show, and got to take pictures of Jewel and ty could you please email me privately? Also, does anyone know of any mp3 sites with jewel songs? I need a few songs and i cant find em anywhere. Thanks ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 18:42:06 -0400 From: "Amanda" Subject: [EDA] Jewel going country Well, to put all those fears to rest.... Jewel said "My record lable is concerned im getting to old. They were surprised at central park when everyone remembered me. I mean since it has been 2 years since my last record. I guess what they are really afraid of is im going to go country on them" then she finished that up with laughing. SO im guessing she finds it as amusing as we do :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 18:05:58 -0500 From: "LH" Subject: [EDA] Jesus Loves You Well the song to me, seemed a bit sarcastic. Which is why she mentioned that the Dell's (of Dell computer fame)....didn't seem to like it too much. I can't remember a whole lot of lyrics specifically, but it did seem like one of those songs like Pieces Of You that is gonna piss off a few people because they won't get it. Matrix ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 18:01:41 -0500 From: "LH" Subject: [EDA] Nashbash after some sleep Ok, well past the stuff I've already said. Jewel did state the album is already done and she did do a photo shoot. The group that was at the EDA gathering had quite a bit of fun roping wooden cows and sweating in the heat. Part of us went to the San Antonio Taco Company...which was a little strange for me being from Texas and going all the way to Nashville to eat at a mexican restaurant (they place them every other block here, it's the law). Dennis had a contest for who drove the longest to see Jewel....we won since we drove TWICE from Dallas (we showed up the first weekend too) AND had a severely BAD road trip the first time around (can you say mechanical failure). I was with the loud crew in the back: Erica, Dan, Jamie (I think it is), Cara, Kristie (the Blue Jean angel !!!), Katie, Tammy (yay, Barney!!!!), and a couple of others I can't remember (sorry, I've slept since then...no disrespect). I still would have stomped you all in UNO !!!! I already talked about the actual concert. I really don't remember hearing more than probably three or four new tunes. I have a feeling that some if not all will probably end up as b-sides for her singles on this album. She seemed to be having trouble playing some songs and remembering others. On YWMFM, I don't know if anyone caught it, but she kept trying to go to the D-chord instead of the E-minor...but that's technical crap. Anyway, after the show we all hung out and took some pics (which I'll post a little later), and Jewel finally walked out with Ty. She just posed for a second, told everyone thanks for coming and said they needed to scoot off to get some dinner. No one really rushed her for autographs or to be posed with them or anything. I really like that about the EDA's...they respect Jewel as a person. That's what it's really all about and I think that's why we get invited to things like this. I can say that I may just have to make a special trip sometime to Nashville again just to visit all my new EDA buds down there (and finish that UNO game). My camera ran out of batteries RIGHT when Jewel came out (typical), so I only got pics of the EDAs and not Jewel. But I'm sure someone will post the pics they took after the show. Well, that's the story from my end. So if any of you EDAs come through Dallas...make sure to look me up. Somewhat like Stephenville -- acoustic tongue twisters at points... i think that's why not a lot of us can't give specific parts....too many damn words :-) Thank goodness for the cd booklet. I'd say Jesus,West, and Slide are lyrically driven and a different kind of tempo where the Tenderness is more of a slow, romantic love kind of story. One of them, I can't remember if it was West or Slide she made a comment to Dan Huff (the producer??) that it had a punk rock guitar section to it. Which one was -- anyone... anyone... Bueller?? > And are the songs (lyrically) very sincere like the Spirit songs, or very > kind of > hard-edged/sarcastic like a lot of the unreleased songs she's done. And > did > she have any kind of a band or was it just her and her guitar? > Same as above I think the 3 are what I would consider hard edge or sarcastic and the Tenderness is something like Spirit maybe like AOF. (?) And it was Jewel and 2 guitars. A 'regular' maybe a Taylor and Big Blue :-) No band I was surprised...a good surprise. I would be certain she recorded in studio with a band cuz at one point in there she asked if any musicians who worked on the album where there. One spoke up and she was like your the only that showed up?? :-( And he was like I think so and so is here but he never made himself known.
