To those of you who were like me when you read the postponement email (read as: had a stroke/heart attack/nervous breakdown/hyperventilation) because you spent $400+ on airline tickets, I have good news. I had my nervous breakdown and cried because I had to break the news to my parents who weren't thrilled about this whole deal in the first place. So I woke them up at 12:30 AM when I read the email and broke the news. I cried some more then my mom called the airline, expecting to pay $100 more per ticket for a cancellation/rescheduling fee making the total $600+. LUCKILY our airline (TWA) is allowing us to reuse the tickets anytime in the next year. I think we have to pay if the actual price of the tickets goes up, but we won't have to pay a fee. SO....... after a lot of tumbling emotions I am not out any extra money, but I have ONE request to make for the J-Team: Can you PLEASE let us know about a week in advance to the date of the rescheduled concert? I'm sure that way it will be easier for everyone involved, including you guys. I'm over my breakdown, I wish Jewel well (I got chronic strep/throat infections every year for about 3 years, so I sympathize) and I hope that what the TWA people told me was right. Good Luck to all of you :) ~Rachel~ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jul 2001 04:03:48 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." Subject: [EDA] NJC: I really feel sorry for you guys and gals Hmmm...this has been quite an interesting week...just when you think things can't get any worse, they do. As far as Jewel goes...I'm sure she'll be feeling a-ok in no time. She's been sick before and has gotten over things like bronchitis in the past only to come out and perform great shows like always. She'll be alright. :-) It's all the EDA's I feel really bad for. Especially those who are already in Nashville (spent the money on the plane tickets already), in a hotel (that money is gone too now), and may not even be aware of this cancellation. So they get to the theater tomorrow evening only to find it empty. That's going to SUCK! I know some EDA's personally who are in Nashville right now but I have no way of contacting them since I don't know where they're staying. One EDA said she blew all her earnings this summer for this. I really feel for her too. Even if she can still just pay a transfer fee on the tickets (which I doubt she can), that's another $50 at least. As far as some requests go, about having it on a weekend next time, I really don't think we have any control over this. It's a matter of when Jewel's people can book the venue, what her schedule permits, how her health is at that time, etc, etc. Lots of variables. I would actually be surprised if it was on a weekend day or night. Not that it's impossible, but a weeknight just seems more realistic. So this raises another question....if all the invitations are closed, and this get's drawn out a few weeks, and lots of the younger ones are back in school...what happens? The audience is then composed of 50 or 60 (if even that) EDA's rather than 100? So then there's more EDA's missing out on this who could have otherwise gone. I think those already with plane tickets in their hands should still get to go of course, but for anyone not out any money now...and if they'll be back in school then and can't go anyway, well I think those "slots" should open up for other EDA's to go who missed out this first time around (even though everyone was invited?). That would just seem like a very nice thing to do, especially after this sad news has surfaced. But I realize that may not happen for logistical reasons. For those out their money, time, etc., I really hope you're able to try to take something positive from this experience. But, no matter which angle you look at this from, it sucks reeeeallly bad! I think all those EDA's should be invited to Jewel's house for the make-up show...doesn't she have a recording studio there anyway? :-) That would be a nice makeup gift! PS...didn't an EDA say something about Jewel coughing alot last week in NY? I wonder if that was a sign of things to come maybe? This is all really interesting. This isn't the first time something like this has happened though, so don't feel alone. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jul 2001 04:05:17 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope you get better before august 19th, i would be sooooooooooooo sad if you werent... we/i love you tons jewel!! get well soon! love alisa, aka now and zen girl! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jul 2001 11:24:42 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: [EDA] Thoughts on the rescheduling of Nashville On a previous episode, Scott pretty much begged: >Hi all.. I just wanted to put my two cents in and ask the J-Team to please >consider having the concert on a weekend if they postpone it too much >later.. {snip} >But I think it would be nice if it could be considered that the concert >should be >on a Saturday.. If it's on a Friday, people won't have time to get there.. >If it's a Sunday, people won't be able to get home on time.. {snip} and recently Derrick submitted: {snip} > As far as some requests go, about having it on a weekend next time, >I really don't think we have any control over this. It's a matter of when >Jewel's people can book the venue, what her schedule permits, how her health >is at that time, etc, etc. Lots of variables. I would actually be >surprised if it was on a weekend day or night. Not that it's impossible, >but a weeknight just seems more realistic. {snip} OK...everybody sitting down? Grab a chair, I'll wait............ I agree with Derrick here. I have NO inside info here, just an analysis. While we of course have no realisitc control over any of the rescheduling decisions, and the J-team *might *do their best to put the rescheduled event on a weekend night, I would think, based soley on what I've witnessed over the last 5+ years on this list, that there is a strong liklihood that the rescheduled event would be on a weekday, Monday through Thursday, outside shot at Friday. When Jewelstock was announced, after conferring with then J-team contact Hiranya (remember her oldtimers?), one of the first things made clear was that the show(s) would be on a weekday. It ended up being on Thursday and Friday. When Jewel taped MTV Unplugged with an EDA audience, it was on a weekday. Storytellers with an EDA audience ? A weekday. Sessions At West 54th with an EDA audience? A weekday. (none were Friday I might add) While I am not 100% sure, I think the reasoning for this is simple. Labor practices and the avoidance of or minimization of overtime pay. These events are recorded on video and tape. They are essentially all recording session, just with a live audience. A LOT of working people involved. It's a business, they are all working. While of course many businesses are open on weekends, most of America works Monday thru Friday and since these live audience recording sessions always have happened on a weekday, I do not think it's a coincidence. Also, past experiences (the relatively few I admit) show that while Jewel is in recording sessions for an album, she does some full blown concerts on weekends (i.e. even now, the upcoming Vermont and two San Diego shows). Present Vegas odds put it at 8-1 the rescheduled Nashville concert is on a weekday. But wouldn't an upset be nice? Or even a Friday, I mean if it HAS to be a weekday, Friday would be sweet. Mike P.S. Michiel, you out there? I figured you'd have been ALL OVER this Nashville thing flying in from Europe etc etc etc. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jul 2001 11:00:31 -0700 (PDT) From: Abigail Greif Subject: [EDA] The EDA poetry page - reminder... Just a couple of things... I read Mike's post about when they might reschedule the Nashville show... Bummer! I'll join Scott in praying (and, yes, begging) for it to be on a weekend. Or even a Friday :) College starts in late August for a lot of us, and once that ball gets rolling, little runs to Nashville will be hard to come by. So I'm crossing my toes for a weeked performance :) Also, I went to the EDA poetry page this evening to check it out. You guys rock! I'm really into writing as well, so I had a lot of fun reading ya'll's work. And, Brynn, if you're out there... you're writing really struck a chord w/ me.
