I think that radio does a great disservice to its listeners. By continually playing the same manufactored music, we lose the opportunity to discover new artists. I have often said that somewhere out there is my favorite song that I will never hear. There are so many great musicians that go unnoticed. I know that radio plays what will sell, but perhaps if other music was played, the boy band generation would find something else. (And that would sell!!!) There are a lot of kids who are sold on what the radio plays for them. Why wouldn't they love this other music, if they were exposed to it?! It's still unpopped, of course, but I was thinking of popping it, shelacking the bag, and making into a japanese-lantern type deal. What do you all think? Because of my huge interest in Phish, I've found many other groups that have so much talent, that I would have never heard of otherwise. Radio plays crap. All the good stuff isn't on radio. Even in Jewel's case... many people don't like Jewel only because of what theyve heard on the radio. But her album songs are way better than her radio songs, and her non album songs are way better than her album songs.... So radio in no way is a good place to judge music.... you have to go beyond radio to hear it. A majority of the artists i listen to arent on radio..... julia darling (got an advance CD from her label to review before it was released...) steve poltz (found his cd by accident when it was just released... never knew he recorded one.... and i bought it cause i remembered he wrote w/ jewel) mary lou lord (found her in CMJ New Music Monthly a few years back. been in love with her since.) david poe (same as mll) david rice (same as mll and dp) dump (same) wheat (same) hurricane #1 (same) quickspace (same) leftover salmon (friend) string cheese incident (friend) ominous seapods (that mp3 thing youcant say here, when i searched for "jam bands") widespread panic (friend) bela fleck and the flecktones and I was even listening to Dido a year before they started playing her on radio. and ect.... there is a whole great world of music out there.... and you don't need radio to tell you about it. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #256 ***************************
