Did Jewel just generally look unhappy at the performance though? I thought she just looked really either unhappy or bored or both. I mean she really did not do much, and you could hardly hear her, which is really a shame. And she has been so skinny lately, but maybe I'm freaking out over nothing, but did anyone else notice on the side views that her middle looked a little poufy? Like 3 months along or so poufy? LoL Just me thinking is all, don't anyone go get in a tizzy over what I say LoL Gina EastAngel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2001 16:35:44 +0100 From: "Chris Groves" Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel's next record - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Connell" > I must respectfully disagree with some of the above. > > As far as "unlike Pieces Of You we get to hear Jewel's natural voice"...I > mean, what could be MORE natural than a live recording? > > I forgot the exact numbers, but about 7 or 8 of the tracks on POY are live, > while only one-half of a song on Spirit was live. Jewel's been quoted many times saying that she's never listened to Pieces Of You since its release. She thinks she sounds like Kermit the Frog on some tracks eg WWSYS. Jewel visited a voice coach prior to the recording who changed the way Jewel sang. Thankfully it was only temporary. My favorite song is Hands. My favorite part, musically, of the song is where Jewel is singing the lines: "Poverty stole your golden shoes, it didn't steal your laughter And heartache came to visit me, but I knew it wasn't ever after." The changes in her vocal range and the inflection in her voice on the second line of the quote, the part "but i knew it wasn't ever after" are just amazing. It communicates the words so well and gives them so much depth. You can just hear her brighten with hope. I've read Pablo Neruda's version, and I think Jewel's just has so much more depth and meaning to it. I love the way Jewel brought religion into the work and how it was presented, even though I'm not religious at all. The song Hands had a profound influence on me. The beauty of that song and the fact that it contributed to the development of a set of values I hold, through my listening to it and thinking about the content of it, had a strong impact on my life. Spirit was the first Jewel Album I heard. I remember when it came out and I was working on crypto implementations for e-commerce apps and studying and messing around with organic minimization and modeling stuff, areas where there was tremendous money at the time. I listened to Hands allot when I made the decision to not enter/leave those sectors and work with the data center of the nonprofit research group I'm still working with now. Jewel's work had such an influence on me in that decision that I named the main computer system after her - "kilcher". Almost all medical research data on NCI sponsored clinical trials in pediatric cancer are handled by "kilcher". The system has been running for almost 4 years now, with out a single problem handling hundreds of transactions a day from all over the world. I did have a whole cluster set up for a while as jewel(s).kilcher, but multiple jewels was just way too much trouble for me to want to deal with. lol :) I'm leaving, probably in september, to go work for a .com start-up. But, I've already hired a replacement for me and he said he wouldn't rename the system when I left. So, it looks like Jewel's namesake will continue to collect the research data for a while to come. > ps. not too many of us using these 'angel' monikers anymore...huh? ps. Alex, the geekangel (?) :) pps. Here's one more vote for some punk music from jewel. :) Maybe a Ramones cover? - VAB - - --- V. I discovered jewel in july 96. Ive met 4 EDAs. I have a few more that are really close friends. One of them, Ive shared many firsts with. She came to Florida and we spent a weekend being tourists. She got to see Disney and the ocean for the first time. Two months later I flew to the Twin Cities saw my first snowfall, first time traveling without family or friends. Totally alone 1200 miles from home in snow and competely alone. Then there is Sarah- the ex EDA. She's been there for me though the 2 most recent tough times of my life. For that I will forever be grateful. We're planning on meeting next summer. She lives in California. Were definately going to San Diego and who knows where else.
