If you like, or hate, the idea of Jewel doing a country album. Jewel has been classifed as pop/folk/rock by many critics. When has she ever sounded like todays "pop" music? How bought today's rock? What ever she sings she brings her own style too. Lets not worry too much. But on a personal note- Im a total sucker for the early "girl and guitar" stuff. To me the only thing better than the sound of a guitar is a guitar and a pretty voice. =) Eliot ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Jun 2001 21:46:36 -0400 From: "cymbaline" Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel's next record I know how to settle this. Jewel will not release an album for at least another 3 years. During that time she will be endlessly recording 15 songs in every possible genre, for its own CD. Then all at the same time, a rap album, a country album, a pop album, an acoustic/folk album, a rock album, an opera album and so on, will be released, people can buy which jewel album they want, and everyone will be happy. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2001 07:46:57 -0700 (PDT) From: Lee Garner Subject: [EDA] Confederate likes country... Howdy ya'll, Just letting ya'll know where I stand on this whole country nonsense. I agree with someone who siad wait till it comes out, then decide. Or you could do like me, and not really care what she decides to put out, and just enjoy it becuase she decided to let everyone else have a part of her. I'd really like to hear some steel guitar in some of her songs; ones already done, and those upcoming. His most famous work is on both Creed albums, which are definitely ROCK albums not country albums. I think it's possible that Jewel hired him to work on some of her more harder-edged material..... it seems like the logical thing anyway. Dann Huff: This guy is REALLY accomplished. He's worked on a lot of country albums... but also a surprising number of pop-based records. He worked on Mariah Carey's Daydream (not good news.. but there you go), a Rod Stewart album, Celine Dion, Madonna, and more. but most of his work has been on country albums. he's probably worked with every successful country artist out there! anyway... that's him. Itaal Shur: all i know about him is that he co-wrote Smooth with Rob Thomas for Santana's album... and that's kinda what made him successful..... he's definitely not country. so... so far we only have ONE major country producer working with jewel.. and we have a pop producer and a rock producer.... so the album is probably going to be quite diverse.... we'll see. later steve ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2001 10:49:03 EDT From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] country album hi i have to admit if jewel goes completely country (as in she starts singing songs like the ones i sat through the other night on that awards show).. i'll be a little dissapointed... i'll probably buy the record but i don't think i'll continue to be as big of a fan..... but let's not forget - not only has she been working with country producers, she's also been working with the guy who co-wrote Smooth (the Santana song).... so I don't think her next album is going to be a complete country CD.... secondly.. she has in the past expressed concern about alienating her fans by a country CD (if you remember the Rolling Stone interview back when spirit was released). she actually mentioned the possiblity of releasing two records simultaneously... one country (released under another name), and one ordinary record.. just so as not to alienate her fans. i doubt she'll actually do that.. but it shows she doesn't want to freak us out. i think whoever said that the record will just have a few of the "country-esque" songs she's written on it is proabably right.. and she's working with country producers to get them right. the thing that worries me more about the record is that she's using so many different producers. i think that's a huge mistake. it's something a lot of commercial pop acts do to get variety on their records... but it doesn't make for a very unified CD.... i guess if Jewel is co-producing then that's what she'll bring to the mix. but a lot of CD's that have multiple producers sound more like mix-n-match deals than actual records. we'll see.. steve ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Jun 2001 11:47:41 -0400 From: Lucas Holt Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel's next record You forgot though that she throws out all of it at the last minute, and then records a completely different album. I agree with cymbie on the album... I really DON'T THINK it's going to be country... I've added 3 News articles to my Jewel web page, Hotel Angel, considering Jewel's next album... One talks about the possible style, the other about the possible producers and the last one is the Review from The Phillipines. They are a collage of information from many different sources, which is quite interesting to read to see the many different perspectives regarding Jewel's work. You can see them at: http://members.xoom.com/hotelangeljk/Main.html I have also created a new poll: What musical style do you consider Jewel to be? (*polls are always fun... he he*) I think there are a lot of hints that the next album is going to be like POY, but Jewel singing more beautifully as her voice has really matured now and is even more versatile. Consider the hints: 1. Austin City Limits period. Jewel was tired of touring and wanted to figure out what she was doing (that was after constantly touring and playing rock stuff!). She re-appeared with Stephenville and Break Me: folky folky folky... Jewel at her best! 2. Then came her Solo Acoustic Tour... I mean... wow, you have to give her credit for that... She sang amazingly and really returned to her roots, and the best thing it was COMPLETELY SOLO ACOUSTIC! 3. Consider the recent concerts she's planning to give... THEY ARE ALL SOLO ACOUSTIC! And she's planned 5 already... Well, in concerts around that time July / August Jewel is more likely to preview some material from her new album (as well as not forgetting Solo Acoustic POY song versions and Spirit song versions)... and if the venue is Solo Acoustic... what does it tell you about the album? Maybe it will not be COMPLETELY solo acoustic, but we can tell that it would be folk and acoustic orientated... 4. www.jeweljk.com The Main page shows Jewel playing her acoustic guitar from a venue during her solo acoustic tour (different from before, which showed Jewel playing at a large venue her electric guitar) AND the pictures of Jewel recording shows her playing acoustic guitar! 5. Even if Jewel did country, she will definetely won't do it for the WHOLE album... Just a few songs, and these songs are more likely to be like 'Angel Needs A Ride' and 'Studies in Love #12', so George, don't worry, I'm sure you LOVE these songs 'cause they are from the time you say Jewel was "at her best". 6. I think there is a misunderstanding with what is country anyway... My friends think Jewel is country, by listening to some of POY and Spirit songs, and I go like... no way, it's folk (well, actually I say it's neo-folk rock just to tease them... he he). Some people don't know what folk music is and confuse it with country because of the acoustic guitars... YWMFM was even played in Country music radio stations and WWSYS in alternative radio stations... Here in Peru, I can tell you that HANDS was played at a HARD ROCK radio station and they pass it quite regularly he he... The main point is: Jewel's style is unique... just wait for the 4th album... But I think it will have a lot of acoustic... There's only one bad song on Spirit and that's the hidden track (which should have remained hidden). Even Joy contains some incredible Jewel vocals.
