A lot of artists have complained about getting much lower royalties on album sales. Jewel hasn't complained, but maybe it's because she doesn't care. I've heard bands complaining about rates as low as $0.09/unit. A typical first contract would be for 2 albums before renegotation, so her third release would be much better. Total royalties for albums tends to be about $1-1.50, including songwriter, producer, etc. Jewel's saving grace on royalties is most likely due to her being her own songwriter. > >==================================== > > $8,500,000 WOW!!!! Then don't forget recoupable funds. Typically, all the promo costs get deducted from the sales royalties. She spent how much time on the road? Did the concerts make money or not? There were how many advertisements for the albums? It's easy to spend millions of dollars on these things. The record label is simply loaning the artist the money for it, then takes it back from the artist's share of sales. > >Books: > >$12,000,000 Books have better rates, but how many copies sold? Books tend to measure sales in thousands, or tends of thousands of units, not millions. Jewel broke a lot of records because her book sold to people who don't normally buy books, do we know how many? This still sounds a bit high to me... > >Movie - probably $1,500,000 Was it that high budget a movie? She was a major supporting character more than a star. She's not an action movie star... > >SO AT THE VERY LEAST $13,500,000 > > Don't forget all the money she makes as a songwriter for radio play -- > 6.5 cents per spin, or something like that. YWMFM probably earned her a > fair chunk of change via mechanicals. This is most likely the source of the bulk of her income. She hasn't done any commercial endorsements I can think of, but songwriter royalties are about the only place in the music industry where the artists actually do make money. The rest all tends to get gobbled back up by the labels. I'm prepared to believe she's a millionaire, I'm just doubting she's anywhere close to $20million. I would guesstimate somewhere in the $2-5million range...
