Sorry =) I'm just curious as to what different peoples views are considering what makes a song either country, folk, pop, rock etc. I think there are some differing views and I want to know if there is anything definitive that distinguishes the genres. This morning, one of the leaders at my church, was admitted to the hospital. I don't understand the whole story, since I got it just a few moments ago from my grandparents, who got it from my parents who are at the hospital with him, his wife and our pastor. What it sounds like is his vocal cords are paralyzed, and he had all this phlem built up, and he was suffocating on that.... at the hospital they gave him all these drugs to clear out the phlem, but as a result of that he is now in a coma on total life support. So its quite serious.... He did squeeze his wife's hand, which can be a good sign, but the doctors are still apprehensive. I don't think he was breathing for a while. His name is Paul, and he's quite young (only in his mid to late 50s, I believe), and he's one of the nicest men I know. I've known him since I was abut 10... Please pray for Paul and his wife, that he recovers... cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 11:41:43 -0500 From: "Jean Harlean" Subject: Re: [EDA] Country/rock/folk etc. Kristie asked: I'm just curious as to what different peoples views are considering what makes a song either country, folk, pop, rock etc. I think there are some differing views and I want to know if there is anything definitive that distinguishes the genres. I don't know if there's anything definitive...but here's how I catogorize them: Country: Kind of hard to explain (espcially since I don't listen to country at all, except for the odd Jewel song), but I usually think of country as being slightly off-key singing (think Jewel on "Cold Song") with lyrics that that often talk about the Christian religion etc. Like I said I don't listen to much country, but that's the best I can catogorize it. Folk: I think folk pretty much varies vocal wise and all..for me a folk song tells a story (like Painters or Adrian), tends to be on the longish side, and can change tempo at any given time. Pop: Pop basically means "popular", but now most people think of it as Britney and the gang..I guess that's how I would catagorize it as well. There are many "pop" bands who are not pop (like Oasis-very popular, but not exactly known for boyband material). But gernerally I think of music that is solely "pop" as being Briteny stuff. Rock: Like pop rock varies too (hard rock, soft rock etc etc) but I would say rock would be anything like Oasis or Red Hot Chilli Peppers (which isn't really easy to discribe). Lots of guitars (both acoutsic and eleteric) and meaningful lyrics. Hoped that helped and didn't confuse anyone *too* much! ~~Jean~~ _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 11:45:54 -0500 From: "Jean Harlean" Subject: Re: [EDA] Unreleased Songs Poll Shawn asked: If you could pick 7 of Jewel's unreleased songs to put on the new cd or just a cd of unreleased songs what would they be? What Jewel needs to (re)launch her singing career is a major artist to sample or remix one of her songs. It worked for Dido. Turning a mediocre singer into a global star. It would be a major boost for Jewel's career. One of the greatest singers around, who surely deserves global success. (I actually heard a kid in my school say that - I almost popped him one.) People don't realize how diverse she really is and it irritates me. So my question is, if you were to make a CD to try to convince someone of her musical flexibility, which ten songs would you include? My choices, and why I picked them, are: 1) Shadows Play (mellow, kinda jazzy) 2) Serve the Ego (strange, funky, not what one would expect from her) 3) Break Me (slow, soft, sweet melodic "good girl" Jewel) 4) Down (rockish, good beat - or maybe Love Me Just Leave Me Alone) 5) Carnivore (really good, angsty, great vocals, classic Jewe, my goodness I love this songl) 6) Do You Wanna Catch a Cold With Me (cute, playful) 7) Life Uncommon (gospelish version) 8) Ave Maria (where her opera training comes in handy) 9) I Got the Blues more than You Do Blues (well, obviously, the blues) 10) Sweet Sweet Angel (kinda country...) There you have it. What do we have? - country, blues, classical, gospel, classic Jewel, rock, melodic folk, jazz, undefinable funky stuff... I tried to find songs that fit different styles of music. Would you guys say the remixed version of Jupiter is kinda like pop music? A little? I guess I could include it. What do you guys think? emsy Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! I mean, she's so diverse? Why can't she explore into dance beats or whatever? She did a remix of Jupiter..... don't forget that. And I have another thing to say about rap music. It's not all remake. I think that rap music is an art. It's music. Now, if you have love music, then you are open to music. Don't be afraid to try new things. You never know what may come of it..... Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashin Jewel or anything. She's great. But, I would hold your word when you say that remixes aren't for her. Remix is different from remake. She REMIXES her songs all the time. She doesn't really do any remakes.... except older songs, I think. But, anyways.... whenever I hear her sing her songs live, they are almost all the time different from the way she sings it on her CD. I don't think that she sings the same song the same way every time.
