In regards to: People are supposed to but NJC in the subject of their e-mails if the e-mail doesn't have anything to do with Jewel. And, I kind of agree about people not talking about Jewel. I expected to get a little bit of diversity in this list, but it seems all everyone talks about is who they don't like. Everyone has their opinion, which is very cool and should be voiced. However, I think it is horrible that people are put down on a Jewel e-mailing list for that opinion. By listening to Jewel's music, aren't we all supposed to be more open-minded, kind hearted, and understanding?? That's something to think about before you bash someone for liking Eminem, Marilyn Manson, or whoever... I think the eminem thing is wearing down but I just have to correct something. Steve said "Yes, it's talking about violence. But talking about it is so much better than actually being violent - and is Eminem actually violent.... no." Well actually YES he is. I think the one thing we can all agree on here is the pistol whipping someone is violent. He was on tv the other day and said that he didn't regret doing it. He just regretted the outcome...so basically he only regrets being in trouble. I don't think that it's a coincidence that he raps explicitely about violence and then goes out and commits acts of violence. Like someone mentioned on here earlier... I do feel that this list would be incredibly boring if the only thing we talked about was Jewel. Things would get old. I enjoy these debates. I think you might too... we both had a little too much fun with our sarcasm. I apologize for calling you an asshole. Normally I would just let it pass, but you caught me off guard on a bad day. I'm not really such a bitch all of the time. PMS still exists, even if you are an EDA. You also said that If I was looking to make friends, I should go someplace else. I've got plenty of friends; I wasn't necessarily implying that this list was for that point. It's just the fact that I know many people on this list are here because they like Jewel, and can't necessarily talk to their friends about her- because some people just don't like Jewel... or appreciate art... what have you. Therefore, we have our EDA friends, pen pals, etc... to chat with about Jewel. And yes, I love this list. It's full of diversity, which makes it interesting. The debates we have are fun, they're interesting, and they're opinionated conversations, which may be impounded, and maybe not (maybe I didn't use the right word there... it's early.. no time for vocab.). Sometimes they get over-heated... but like shroom said... no grudges. Right now, there isn't a lot going on with Jewel... so people are swaying away from the topic- Just because there really isn't much to talk about. Everyone is looking forward to the new album, everyone is ancy... therefore, a lot of people are bringing in topics that aren't necessarily related to Jewel... It keeps the list going, it makes it fun. I never said that Jewel was better than anyone. "She kicks a hell of a lot more ass" or whatever I said, was just my opinion. Sure, I really do like Dido, maybe I've gotten the wrong impression from what she said because of how she worded it. Jewel's been around a lot longer, has more material, and writes poetry- something I love to do. Therefore I like Jewel more, not because she's necessarily better, but I, myself, am interested in Jewel more than I am Dido. In my world... Jewel kicks ass... period. Lot's of other people kick ass too... for instance, in my opinion, The Beatles, Morrissey, Radio Head, REM, Ben Folds Five, Dave Matthews, Sarah Mclachlan, mxpx, the ataris, Anti-Flag, ancient of days, The juliana Theory, Mary lou Lord, Jill sobule, even Dido (but, I like jewel better)... all kick ass, and that's just a few. I've got an extremely diverse taste in music, a lot of people kick ass :). it's an expression, I like them. Their lyrics are amazing, they lift me up, or bring me down. The inspire me, they teach me, they're wonderful. I'm not saying that they're better than everyone else, I'm saying that I like them, more than I would like, say: N'sync, Creed, Brittany spears, Eminem, Korn, what have you. Their lyrics don't have enough substance for me. And that is just my opinion. Sure, they have substance for other people, sure, they're all artists, sure, they're all probably excellent to some people- but not to me. I'm not saying that they suck, or that they aren't any good at what they do, because maybe they are- but they don't appeal to me. People love spinach, I hate it... lettuce does just fine for me. Just like everyone else, different things appeal to me more than others... that doesn't mean they are better. I also apologize for correcting your english... yes, you spelled everything correctly ;). I have a lot of respect for you, you speak all of the languages I would want to learn- but don't have enough time or patience. I took 4 years of spanish, er, 3 rather.... so I know "un poquito espanol" and you're right, I probably couldn't spell half of the words correctly. As we North Americans know... Our education system is rancid. That's right... it stinks. I'd like to start my own school after college... or a little further down the road. American children don't have the advantages, or opportunities to take foreign languages before high school. (some do, I went to a preschool that taught spanish, german, and french) Even if they did, like my preschool, nobody kept up the studies- so that we wouldn't forget. I went into 8the grade with the expanded knowledge of: uno, dos, tres... yeah, I could count to ten in spanish. So yes, I am sorry for that. so, I'll end with saying that everyone on here is going to have a disagreement with someone sometime. No grudges, okay??? If I could tell this list just one thing, it would be: "we're all okay." :) kudos, Antonio?? I'm sure you all already have, but I'm new, so humour me. The first time I saw/heard Jewel was when I was about twelve. I was flipping the channels on TV and I stopped at Much Music and Jewel's "You Were Meant for Me" video was on. It was at the "I brush my teeth, I put the cap back on" part, and I just remember sitting there thinking "Who is this girl with this amazing voice?". I was so used to hearing music where people couldn't really sing, so she was a surprise. I remember just sitting there in awe during the rest of the video. I was only twelve, so I was out of the music loop, so to speak, and I hadn't heard of her. I didn't really listen to music much then, either. I just remember sitting really still and thinking that Jewel's voice was beautiful, she was beautiful, the song was beautiful, Steve Poltz was beautiful...It was like some religious experience. (I don't mean to trivialize religious experiences, but it really was like that.) Anyway, that is when I first heard/saw her, and I have been, shall we say, rather obsessive, in a good non-stalker way, ever since. What about the rest of you? I was thinking about why I like Jewel, and I came up with a lot of obvious reasons, but little things that she does that I love too... - when she's singing some particularly poignant part of a song and she raises her eyes up to the left or right - when she doesn't quite know what to do with her hands when she is singing and she wrings them and fiddles with her fingers and looks uncomfortable without a guitar in them - when she prefaces a song with "this is a song", or "um, this is a quiet song, so...shut up" and all her other little Jewel sayings - when a song gets a little faster and comes to a dancy part and she kinda dances - when her voice does that gravely/throaty/cracking thing, like in "Carnivore" or "Race Car Driver" - when she talks to people in the audience and says stuff like "Hey, person in the green shirt, where are you going?" - how she politely receives and laughs at all the crude bull-rider boyfriend jokes thrown at her - how she can sing a song, all dolled up, like "Shadows Play" and pull it off, and then totally change her image and cutely sing something like "Do You Wanna Catch a Cold With Me?" - how every time she finishes a song, performed beautifully of course, she still looks insecure and smiles a shy smile and gives the audience a look as if she is thinking "was that good?" - she never seems to know what to do with herself when she finishes a song - she mocks herself, especially about "Ride With the Devil" (God I love that movie) - how she makes some goofy women, like on the View or Kathie Lee Gifford, look totally stupid by being her gracious self - how every time she sings "YWMFM", it's different and still full of genuine emotion Okay, obviously this list could go on forever, but I'm going to stop it here.
