I have seen an interview with Eminem when he said: "my lyrics aren't meant to be taken literally, they aren't true and i dont mean everything i say in my songs." Katie, that was exactly what I meant by that point. Many people take his lyrics at face value without pondering the possibility that he doesn't really act out what he says. Angela ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 20:10:36 EST From: BBBMonkey@aol.com Subject: [EDA] njc - re: eminem What I think people are failing to see with this whole Eminem thing, is the bigger picture. Yes, his lyrics are harsh and offensive. But what he is doing/has done, although unintentionally, is given discrimination the attention and concern it deserves. He is calling out educators and parents to teach children that what he says is wrong and why it is wrong, again unintentionally. Because of complaints from GLADD about his appearance at MTV's Video Music Awards, MTV ran 17 consecutive hours of Hate Crime Education programs. Would MTV have done this if Eminem rapped about hearts and flowers? Probably not. So regardless of what you may think of Eminem's music, him as a person, a musical talent, or a role model, he has managed to do something that has needed to be done for quite some time. He has gotten people to talk about and educate young people about discrimination in a major way. Don't forget to put "hate mail" in the subject line. Ya know, from the very very get go I thought Dido sounded alot like Sarah McLaughlin, you know? Jewel never came to mind. Is it just me? And then i saw her video and what do ya know, there's a resemblance! Why does the media like to, what I'll call, juxtapose these two gals? It's not even the same genre of music! Dido is pop through and through. Don't get me wrong, I love the singer and all her sparsely-shirted videos (whats up with her smiling and singing while her house is being taken away in that one video?) but it's just not the same, Jewel has so much more *heart*. And finally, before I put my coat back up on the rack, excuse me, did I hear some savvy journalist pen Dido the "New Jewel" a while back? The new Jewel? Is there a malfunction or something wrong with the old Jewel? I like my Jewel just fine, thankyou very much. kay, bye ~~Richard The Formerly El Nino Drenched Angel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 21:02:58 EST From: RockerGrl34@aol.com Subject: [EDA] NJC <<<>> but don't you think kids who are too young to understand what exactly "face value" means are being affected? i certainly do. thats why we need to find another way to teach them about reality. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 21:37:06 EST From: ChrissyPf1@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: jewel-digest V6 #79 Thanks Sandy... yes that's right. I am not making any profit from anything. There are a few people who wanted some stuff that I had on video tape-- but they didn't have anything to trade for it so I did it for the price of the blank tape and the postage to send it.. but there are a few people (who I hope have either just forgotten or have been busy) that I have sent stuff to, and I haven't heard from them. Anyway so far I have never had any problems with anyone not holding up their end of a trade, I always tell people how safe it is to trade w/ EDA's I hope this doesn't change. I will vouch for Sandy too, she's a great person to trade with-- very helpful, and honest : ) - -- Chrissy In a message dated 2/26/01 7:57:13 PM Eastern Standard Time, owner-jewel-digest@smoe.org writes: << Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 18:12:50 -0500 From: "Sandy" Subject: Re: [EDA] angelfood trades > i don't want to cause any arguements here i just want > to state a fact. Since you replied to Chrissy's post regarding angelfood trades, I'm assuming you meant since she said.... "who either owe me some cd's or some $$ for unfinished trading". ....that she was making a profit from the trades. I think I can be fairly certain when saying that I'm sure she's talking about money for a blank tape/postage, which is still a non-profit system. When some people don't have any angelfood to trade, or the other person isn't interested in what they do have, the blank tape & postage let's the interested party still get what they want by reimbursing the person who's sending the tape for their costs to do so. I've traded with Chrissy, and she's a great person to trade with, very quick :) I'm sure she's not asking for anything more than reimbursement :) ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 21:06:00 EST From: RockerGrl34@aol.com Subject: [EDA] *reponse to jewel mailing list question <<>> Yes, this is a Jewel mailing list but we as a group like to discuss other issues as well.. How low this country has sunk! >> I just had to point out that just because someone may have a hard time with school, whether it be lack of book-smarts, or just a distracting environment, doesn't mean you're stupid and can't go on to do great things. Personally, I plan on buying Eminem's CD when my poor-unemployed-college-student-self gets some $$.. I don't necessarily condone things that he says but the way I see it, that's my thing. Throughout high school I was picked on for liking Jewel, because let's just say my friends didn't like listening to someone sing about how they wanted to "swallow the moon" :) They had their own music that expressed things they wanted to hear, with messages all of their own. As we have said a million times with Jewel's songs, music's meaning can be interpreted in many different ways. It's all in the ear of the beholder.. Ok, that was cheesy :) But what I mean is, I wouldn't approve of my little brother listening to Eminem's music, because he's not at an age where he can make sense of it. He's still young and innocent :) If someone's going to do something violently horrible after listening to his CD, then I think we would all agree that there was something wrong with them BEFORE they heard his music. More attention should be placed on helping those in need, those who have no one to help them with their problems... Just my opinion, Heather HMN333@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 18:10:39 -0800 (PST) From: Christy Crace Subject: [EDA] NJC Jewel discussion list I've read a lot of postings in the last few days with people stating that this is a Jewel list. Eminem, Elton John, and whoever else shouldn't be mentioned. Well, I love Jewel. I've only been able to attend one concert, but I own and love both books. I have "Pieces of You," "Spirit," and "Joy: A Holiday Collection." I have gone out of my way to purchase back issues of magazines that I missed that have Jewel on the cover. Ok, I admit it, I'm a little obsessed. But, I do realize that there is only so much you can say about Jewel. If people don't throw their thoughts out about other things that are going on, this is going to turn into a list of concert dates and when she is going to be in this or that magazine. If we don't compare Jewel with others, this turns into a very boring DISCUSSION list... Just my thought for the day. Dido is British and generally British people regard Jewel's poetry self-endulgent trite. (not necessarily my opinion though). - -Jim _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 23:17:13 EST From: Fabsurfgrl@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC Reality and Kids I agree, there are many other, better ways to teach children about realities in life. Why don't we start by holding parents accountable for teaching their children, and monitoring what they intake, and talking to them about what they do injest that may be offensive. That would be a much better start than censorship. The meaning behind statements truly gets lost in print (you lose the inntonation, etc.). Simply put, Dido was speaking more along the lines of shooting herself down. SHE is not a talented poetry writer. It's like saying (if you're a bad singer), "I'd be shot if I got up there and sang." At any rate, it is true, however, that the Brits do look at this poetry and such as self-indulgence. That's all.
