Subject: [EDA] In defense of Matt (fanclub) I'm just writing this as someone whose "neutral" about this whole fanclub thing. I'm not saying anyone should or should not join, but I do see where the $12 is necessary. If you think about printing costs, mailing costs, the 8x10 photo you get (that in itself is about $5 most places), plus the magnet and the holiday gift (even if it's only valued at $1.00), this can easily add up to $12. Just the time it takes to organize something like this is costly. I think if someone chooses not to join, it should be for reasons other than the money, because to me this isn't unrealistic. Just don't assume something is a scam though, before you have proof. Give people a chance once in awhile. The world is full of enough negative energy as it is...be positive about things...I'm sure Jewel would support this more than negativety. Derrick PS....I don't know Matt at all...this is all an unbiased opinion. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 01:58:15 EST From: CarnivoreFanClub@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Carnivore Chat - Questions & Answers Thursday, Febraury 29, 2001 5:30 pm Central (6:30 eastern) http://www.jewelfansite.com/livechat.html Asks your questions and get answers about the Carnivore Fan Club in this live, moderated chat. I think I remember reading somewhere, that their dad wouldn't > even let them watch "The Jeffersons". It has nothing to do with HER > father... The racism part of the song is clear when she says "With your > white hood on, daddy" in reference to the Ku Klux Klan. I have always wandered if perhaps the inspiration came a little perhaps from Sylvia Plath's poem 'Daddy'? They are both very alike in attitude and tackle very very similar themes. (in Particular from the ninth stanza onwards) From the second I first heard Jewel's song 'Daddy' the poem was all i could think of. Anyone else ever thought this? Or am i insane lol! Here's the poem for anyone who doesn't know it Daddy You do not do, you do not do Any more, black shoe In which I have lived like a foot For thirty years, poor and white, Barely daring to breathe or Achoo. Daddy, I have had to kill you. You died before I had time - Marble-heavy, a bag full of God, Ghastly Stattue with one gray toe Big as a Frisco seal And a head in the freakish Atlantic Where it pours bean green over blue In the waters of beautiful Nauset. I used to pray to recover you. Ach, du. In the german tongue, In the Polish town Scraped flat by the roller Of wars, wars, wars. But the name of the town is common. My Polack friend Says there are a dozen or two. So I could never tell where you Put your foot, your root, I never could talk to you. The tongue stuck in my jaw. It's stuck in a barb wire snare. Ich, ich, ich, ich, I could hardly speak I thought every German was you. And the language obscene An engine, an engine Chuffing me off like a Jew. A Jew to Dachau, Auschwitz, Belsen. I began to talk like a Jew. I think I may well be a Jew. The snows of the Tyrol, the clear beer of Vienna Are not very pure or true. With my gipsy ancestress and my weird luck And my Taroc pack and my Taroc pack I may be a bit of a Jew. I have always been scared of you, With your Luftwaffe, your gobbledygoo. And your neat moustache And your Aryan eye, bright blue. Panzer-man, panzer-man, O you - Not God but a Swastika So black no sky could squeak through. Every women adores a Fascist, The boot in the face, the brute Brute heart of a brute like you. You stand at the blackboard, daddy, In the picture I have of you, A cleft in your chin instead of your foot But no less the devil for that, no not Any less the black man who Bit my pretty red heart in two. i was ten when they buried you, At twenty I tried to die And get back, back, back to you. I thought even the bones would do. But they pulled me out of the sack, And they stuck me together with glue. And then I knew what to do. I made a model of you, A man in black with a Meinkampf look And a love for the rack and the screw. And I said, I do, I do. So daddy, I'm finally through. The black telephone's off at the root, The voices just can't ring through. If i've killed one man, I've killed two - The vampire who said he was you And drank my blood for a year, Seven years, if you want to know. Daddy, you can lie back now. There's a stake in your fat black heart And the villagers never liked you. They are dancing and stamping on you. They always knew it was you. Daddy, daddy, you bastard, I'm through. by Sylvia Plath ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 04:05:12 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: Re: [EDA] Fan Club Problems? Please read. His songs are hidden behind good pop chords (just like the boy bands) and they have no integrity. In the silm shady song, he says why the heck go to the gramys , the critics (who have nothing to do with the academy and don't vote) can't stand him and why bother, and he didn't only go to the gramys but actually was the main event. Then he said on MTV that he didn't even know that Elton John was gay until a while ago...c'mon! To me he has manipulated almost to perfection a money making machine..controversy, morbid curiosity..my hat's off to him . The one thing that bothers me the most and why I'm taking time of my precious weekend to write this is that, if you are in the position to be in the eye of so many millions of people and actually say somethihng that's going to be heard by them, children included, don't bring a message of hate, there's enough of that go around for centuries..bring a possitive message , of love, laughter , peace, make people feel better , not worse..make 'em dance or something..that's why I'm on this list, 'cause Jewel made me feel better...not worse or hateful to anything. Anyway... he's an "artist" to some, for me, and for those old enough to remember, he's just an angry vanilla ice More smiles..less anger Uri ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 07:12:55 EST From: JewelK512@gateway.net Subject: [EDA] Jewel and Moby Does anyone know if I can find a copy of what Jewel and Moby did togther?? Should we not teach our children reality? I know I wouldn't expose my younger children to Eminem, but he speaks of what really goes on, and despite what Jewel and other artists say, it's not all "love, peace and tranquility". Like you said, Eminem raps towards a certain audience and he makes money doing it. Another viewpoint is that he actually means what he says. But we all don't know him at all. He may want to kill his wife, he may not. It doesn't mean he's actually going to go out and do it. Children are exposed to Madonna with all her sexual content....remember Like a Virgin? Would you expose your children to burning crosses behind a half naked woman? Which is more offensive: that or Eminem? Many people found that to be inexcusable. The reality is that many of us are angry people. Eminem exposes that fact. Im willing to wait until Matt explains it better but Im too busy to go to chat rooms for this information. Maybe its better to explain in a list post. Think about if every eda joins. $12.00 from 3000 edas is a wopping $36,000.00!!! Who profits from all that $$?? Jewel fans or Matt Sullivan?? What is Matt doing for fans with all that $$?? If Jewel and her people have nothing to do with this where is all the newsletter news and tour dates coming from?? Will it be Jewel Link news recycled in a newsletter?? Wont it be old and outdated news by the time it goes through design and layout and printing and snail mail reaches anyone?? I would like to know what this fan club gives us that we dont already have besides a photo and a refrigerator magnet?? I dont want to be negative and I might want to join but I want to know what Im getting before I pay Matt for it. Please tell us and post the chat transcript to the list so everyone can decide if its worth it to join. :) Dee ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Feb 2001 08:45:50 -0500 From: "Devin Starr" Subject: Re: [EDA] NJC: Re: eminem I like Eminem. He does speak with a lot of truth. And he may talk about killing his wife, or cutting his wrists, but who here hasnt at some point idily thought about that on a really bad day? in my opinion he is just getting out what our our Ids are saying (id, part of the reasoning system in your subconcious the id is the i want part.) In an interview with Much Music in Canada, he said that what ever the critics called him, he would be that. Why get in trouble for something your not doing? So hes doing it. You say he is Anti-homosexuality, so he will be that. and if you really dont like him, turn the radio station, dont buy the cd, and change the channel on the tv. I started out not liking him, but that made me keep the stations on when he was giving an interview, or when his songs were playing, and i came to enjoying them. I really like Stan, and not just because Dido was sampled in it. it was because of Stan that i like Thank You. They are both good songs. Stan has real message in it, and its something that most artists fear. A fan gone mad, and trying to be exactly like them... How do you think that Jewel would react if one of us started going aroundcarrying out the lyrics of WWSYS and sleeping with their boss cause its mentioned in her song, or if someone started doing everything in Tori Amos' lyrics or Madonna's? This is just hte new Limp Bizkit thing from Woodstock. Break Stuff changed to What I Say I Am. Nothing more.
