[TigressWH@aol.com] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2001 06:10:00 -0000 From: "Brooke Capulet" Subject: [EDA] NJC: grammys are a sham I'd just like to comment on this Eminem/Steely Dan thing. No, don't worry it's not hate mail. I understand both sides of this argument. I'm a huge supporter of the 1st amendment and I think what would have made the Grammys a sham would have been to not let Eminem perform. However, just because he didn't win doesn't mean the awards are a sham. There are other talented people out there and think about it...These awards pit people from all different genres together so when it comes down to it it's all about the majority opinion of what music was better. There isn't too much common ground between Steely Dan and Eminem. He did win 3 rap awards. And I do think that Eminem is very sharp and witty and honest. However, that's not why people dislike him. There are many people who are just like that. Rappers like Dr. Dre and pop artists like Madonna. The difference is that Eminem promotes violence against minorities such as women. Witty or not the exploitation of violence against others is wrong. The fact that Eminem is hiding behind the argument "It's just a joke" or "They're just lyrics, don't take them seriously" shows just how irresponsible he really is.... HE KNOWS that they are not a joke. He doesn't let his daughter listen to his music. He knows it's real. Sure, we can all acknowledge that he's talented. He is. And we can acknowledge that she's sharp and good with words. He is. But he's also a violent offender. He doesn't deserve anything. Should we tell an already violent world that "Eminem is sharp and talented so it's ok to be violent and promote domestic violence and murder"? Is that the kind of stuff he wants his daughters boyfriends listening to? Let him have his say. But just because he has a CD doesn't mean he deserves an award for its content. But i also believe that there is concequences to everything you do or say, and you should also take responsiblity to what u say to someone... be a little causous. You never know how someone might take what u say. no matter who you are, famous or not. THey may take you seriously, and act on that in a dangerous way. I don't agree with a lot of things emimen says in his albums, and his songs, and i never have. But he is a very good lyricist. and he takes his career very seriously, as i think most musicans, rappers, ect... do, as i would think any one does. To add to what cymbie said, what about these teeny bopper stars.. who are putting certain images out to many young girls' minds that they have to look a certain way. These young girls look up to britney spears, christina agulera, mandy moore, and i think these singers should take into concideration, that these young girls want to be just like them, dress like them, sing like them ect... and for young girls to dress that provocative at the ages of six, seven, eight, is just not healthy. people talk about eminem being such a bad influene on todays youth, what about these young girls, dressing like sluts (mind you... sorry) and putting false images of love and sex into young girls minds.... i'm soooooooooooo sick of such bad music!!! I mean, so many good artists with real talent get pushed aside, and are put on the back burner, to people who can barely sing... Needless to say, I am out of the American music loop. But I was wondering where everyone gets all of this "new" Jewel music. My only source of Jewel seems to be my CD's. I've gotten a little bit of stuff online, but I've never even heard of some of the songs that are mentioned through EDA's. Are there any good websites that have some of her lesser known stuff? And as far as songs that move me, Life Uncommon has to be my favorite. Christy ===== "Lend your voices only to sounds of freedom." -- Jewel Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Because rap is simply not my music... but I do agree with some poeple in here that he deserved the grammy... not that I care, because Jewel hasn't won a million grammies, but I still love her, I think grammies are just for commercial purpose and for the human nature of seeing who is better than who at a certain thing (academy award, mtv awards, cannes film festival, you name it), if you win a grammy you are a good singer ? my ass (pardon the language)...back to the topic, I do believe that he is one of the most honest and straight forward people I've listened, and that simply bothers people, when you are being told the truth in your face, you simply get upset, is how most people reacts... His lyrics may not be the deepest of all, but damn, they are good, and I have to say, the only song I have from him is "Stan" I found it deep, so dark, and the video, goooooood...freakyyyyyyyyy... but is cool. So a HURRAH to eminem into that matter. And for those people concerned about their childs, comon people, 21th century, yes, sex in on tv, drugs in on tv, gay issues are on tv, so WHAT ??? they can still learn/hear about it somewhere else besides tv, so lets just cut the crap and stop blaming people who is expressing themselves through music. I'm gay, and I'm not ashamed of saying it, in fact I'm very proud (not diving into that subject, and people who is homophobic, abstain themselves to write anything about it) Eminem hates gay people, or so he said in one of his songs, do I feel hurt by that ? Am I worried ? No. In fact, one of the things that I admire in people is honesty, and if he says that in a song, and if he feels that way, good for him, at least he have the guts to say it so, and it's not some stupid hipocrite, like a million people out there... So people let's get real here, I REPEAT, it's the 21th century, we have gays, we have sex, we have drugs, we have everything, it's time to stop bitching about the bad things the world have, because guess what ? You don't have the power to change evolution. As simple as that. Just protect yourself from those things you don't like, take some measures about it, and deal with it, cause you will have to someday. Artists to listen to: I'm a big fan of girl music, Sarah Mclachlan, Chantal Kevriazuk, you name it, I've listened to it, I think the voice of a girl can be a lot more powerful than a boy one. And like this girl liz said, there are some amazing people out there to listen to. Paula Cole, Chantal, Sarah, Tori Amos, Tara Mclean, Samantha Mumba, Vanesa Amorossi, Tina Arena, Alanis...so many people, who have their own style, and beautiful voices. I also agree with the comparation, yes, Tara can make the notes jewel does, she is sooo amazing. And about the records, I have both, Silence and Passenger, if you want a copy of Silence, I will be glad to help you with that, because it's her best album so far :) Thanks for reading, Antonio The Charmed Angel P.D: If anyone feels insulted, or attacked somehow by my comments, I'm sorry, but I do believe in freedom of speech, and I was just expressing my thoughts, and I also don't want to cause song controversy here. Like Jewel, her first (well, first *popular* album) was just Patty and her guitar. I believe it was even recorded in her kitchen (but I could be wrong about that...) Her sophomore album, again like Jewel, had a band behind her and was more rocky. I LOVE Patty Griffin, and I'm pretty sure a lot of you on this list would too. THIS IS GREAT!!! I receive a million emails a day but I don't care! I feel like I finally found people who love Jewel as much as I do! This is so wonderful. I have loved Jewel ever since I was twelve with an unwavering devotion (I'm only seventeen though) and I have never been able to find anybody as devoted to her as I am. I love you people. Thank you so much for all this. I also have a question. When you guys hear Jewel described as "the wispy, whiny little Alaskan folk singer" or talk to people who have the impression that she is just another talentless popstar, does it really annoy you? I get so irritated. People who don't know her music think she is just a whiny little girl with a guitar, and don't know that she sings everything and has the most amazing talent. I live in Canada, and the only songs they play on the radio here are "Foolish Games" and "You Were Meant for Me", so that's all my friends and other people I know associate her with. Should I try and enlighten them? Make them listen to "Race Car Driver", "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone", "Shadows Play" or "Carnivore"? Or should I just let them think what they want and let it be their loss? All I know is it really irritates me. I don't want people having a false impression of her range and talent, even though, I know, "to each their own." But it really bugs me. Do any of you experience this?
