You busy workaholic. Hehe. Hope you can come out when Jewel does some more shows out here. All this bickering and arguing sounds alot like some message boards that I frequent. Pointing fingers doesn't do any good for anybody. I've always had the notion that EDAs were more of a "community" of friends than a bunch of strangers. I agree that the old times of WAY back(even before I joined in '96 ...even though my first post was in '97 mike :) when people would share their lives with their online friends without nasty replies or remorse can't happen anymore cause of the shear number of EDAs worldwide. But to have a little of that spirit in each of us when we go to regional or local gatherings or online too. Sure there hasn't been many gatherings, but thats cause Jewel hasn't been doing anything for quite a while. And its been AGES since Jewel or Nedra have posted to the list. Mike does that rule of "sit on it overnight" rule still exist? For you people who don't know, it is where you don't immediately reply to a post that isn't really worth a reply. Like lately the picture thing, nobody had to respond to it. Some "underground" pictures? Yeah, whatever! They're probably doctored pictures like alot of trash on the internet. What was the outcome? ****FROM MTV ONLINE*** Jewel is being sued by her former personal manager for wrongful termination according to the Hollywood Reporter. The suit also accuses Jewel's mother of intentionally directing her daughter to terminate the contract so she could collect the commission herself. The manager, Inga Vainshtein, was fired by Jewel earlier this year, who then almost immediately hired her mother, Lenedra (Nedra) Carroll, who had no previous managerial experience. Vainshtein filed the five-count complaint in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday. She's looking for over $10 million in compensation. Jewel has been both busy and successful since the change. Her newly released album, "Spirit" debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart last week. She's currently marketing books of poetry and memoirs (see "Jewel Prepares New Book As "Spirit" Hits Record Stores"), and she makes her acting debut next year in the Ang Lee Civil War epic, "Ride With The Devil" (formerly known as "To Live On"). That movie is now expected out in June. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 02:44:02 EST From: Mattman8818@aol.com Subject: [EDA] 2001 B-Day Gift If we're giving money to HGH again don't you think we should start ASAP so we can raise as much as possible for our gift to her? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2001 02:45:42 EST From: Mattman8818@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Jewel at My School ...well, kinda What's Simple Is True was the song for our Winter Formal. Now after reading what you wrote about the EDA's needing to grow up and "Learning to Read? Have you used spell check lately. Learning to read means learning to spell and no offense but you haven't done that. Also "Classy Naked Pictures". If you're going to go on a mailing list and tell everybody, and when you mention EDA's that means everybody, that there stupid and you make negative statements about them in an immature manner to prove your maturity that doesn't seem too intelligent. Does it? I'm asking you honestly, not to be slanderous. You basically said I'm stupid when you make a general statement about EDA's. If it's intelligence that you're disputing then a statement like "classy naked pictures" to describe Renoir or Wyeth paintings would be like saying the Sistine Chapel is "A Cool Ceiling". For future reference do not name a group of people then make negative comments about them and expect them to take you seriously. That's like going to South Central Los Angeles and saying "some" black people are the "N" word. If one black person hears that out of your mouth you basically degraded the whole race. That applies to any reference to a group, period. I'm telling you this to learn from. If you're serious and want to learn and want people to take you seriously and stop making fun of you practice what you preach. Quick to Listen, slow to speak, slow to anger, that's what you wrote isn't it? If I was going to be sterotypical and negative I would have made a comment about how you're probably from the Mid-West, live in a trailer and watch a LOT of wrestling but that is immature and uncalled for. Don't be so angry that's not what this list is about. I grew up in New York as a minority in a predominantly black & hispanic town as a caucasion and I was involved in tons of fights with and against other races of people and you soon realize that fighting is useless and regardless of what race or what person your fighting it's still the same result. Being defensive and trying to scare people into respecting you, especially over the Internet, is not the way to go. So don't be so negative and just try to prove people wrong with intelligent, well thought out answers and the respect will come. You should take up Martial Arts. It's good for the mind as well as the body. I recommend Tang-Soo-Do Moo-Duk-Kwan. It works wonders and it keeps you out of trouble while teaching you how to defend yourself before and after the need for violence (if you're attacked you have no choice but to defend yourself, that's what I mean about "the need for violence"). So take this as a learning experience and don't write back about how stupid I am and how smart you are because I'm not going to respond. That shows me you're not worth it. I think all of you who flipped out on the guy who requested a nude picture of Jewel should just chill out and not get so bent out of shape over something so inconsequential. Who cares if someone wants to see Jewel in her birthday suit? It's not the end of the world. If you ask me, it's not even surprising that someone asked for one. Jewel is a beautiful attractive woman, so it's perfectly natural for a guy (or gal) to be curious about what she looks like naked. Any red-blooded male who's interested in Jewel enough to be on this list has no doubt had sexual thoughts about her at one time or another. Come on, admit it guys, I know you're out there. I think Jewel is a very talented, gifted human being with an angelic voice and wonderful songwriting skills, but I'm not ashamed to admit that I also find her very attractive physically. So if someone handed me a nude picture of her, I'd have a look and I'd likely enjoy it too. So what? That doesn't make me a pervert or a bad person, and it doesn't make me have any less appreciation for Jewel's music or her as a person. I guarantee that 99% of the guys on this list, whether they will admit it or not, have looked at pictures of Jewel and thought "I wonder what she looks like naked?" It's completely natural. Most of them have probably fantasized about her too. If they say they haven't, they're lying through their teeth. We wouldn't be human if we didn't have a natural instinct to be curious and interested in sex. So to conclude, what i'm trying to say is.... give the guy a break. If he wants to see naked pictures of Jewel, let him go ahead and try to find them. Those of us who aren't interested in that kind of thing can continue on our merry way with this list and talk about other things. We all know there's a million Jewel-related topics to discuss. I can't believe how such trivial things get blown way out of proportion. This poem, to me, is very raw emotionally and seems to capture the same feeling as some of Jewel's earlier stuff (PoY, etc.) It begins to touch on "poetry" (crying on paper in my mind). I dont think Jewel seems to do that as much anymore. Possibly as we age life becomes softer, and not as harsh but I think we should still remind ourselves of that edge always gleaming inside. Does anyone else see Jewel softening the emotional edges and maybe becoming more subtle in her music? Personally I enjoy PoY and that period of poetry more than Spirit/Post-Spirit stuff, but then again maybe I am still too on edge. Is there a general perception as to the changes in her music as time goes on? Anyway, thanks for the poem. Meatloaf, John Popper, etc etc etc........ - -------------Now here's what I think-------------------- from Sokool etc "Keith" This is pretty long but trust me I prove my point and disprove many given. First let's clear up a few things before I respond. I never said guys that watch football and baseball "are" sexually repressed homosexuals, I said , and I quote "If the perverted theory were true then I guess men watch football or baseball because we're all sexually repressed homosexuals". That was to illustrate that the notion of only watching a specific interest to satisy our sexual drives is rediculous, and I also happen to watch and play baseball and football very much. Also, about Meatloaf, his life story clearly shows him as becoming an overnight sensation. It took him only three years in a psychedelic rock band before he landed a role in "HAIR" and while in that rock band he opened for The Who and Ted Nuggent, both not very good looking bands or people but very popular and legendary today. "http://www.sonicnet.com/artists/biography/12292.jhtml" He dropped out of the limelight for a while because of his personal "problems" then made a comeback. So he's been here for a while and he was one ugly guy when he was hired. The next point was that I chose legends like Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix because they were around long enough to be established as legends. You can't become a legend overnight because there are no numbers or fan support to prove it yet. Melissa Etheridge I used because she is recent, but in defense of her being gay that would actually effect her popularity in a negative way because of the bigoted society we live in. Just look at Ellen Degeners(however you spell her name). She had a hit show and was hosting the grammies. Then she kisses a girl on national T.V, now where is she, or Charles Perez, remember that guy. . . probably not unless you live in Florida. He had a "Number 1" talk show at one point and girls were in love with him until he showed up on the Real World at a gay pride parade with his boyfriend and two weeks after the show aired his talk show disappeared suddenly. He's an anchorman for channel 7 news in Florida about 6 years after the incident. Coincidence? So gay does not add fans, so forget that notion. So how about two letters and a word? K.D Lang. She's no princess but has sold a lot of records. Bonnie Raitt? Joni Mitchel? What about them. Are they beautiful? They sold records, actually more than Britney or Christina did. The reason why the entertainers aren't BUTT ugly is because "Why should they be". Meaning that Melissa Etheridge without make-up is not exactly drop dead sexy. They go through the hollywood phases and develop a look. If you have that kind of money you're going to want to look better than before, not to sell records but personal preference. Melissa Etheridge used to have black spiked hair, honestly, would you have dated her if she was straight? But it didn't matter because the music was just good. Janet Reno isn't singing anytime soon and neither is anyone else her age so that's why you won't see a Janet Reno looking singer but if it you want me to disprove that one. . .two more words for you. Elle Fitzgerald. Sang way into her older days, even with amputated legs. She is dead, but she died in the 80's and people still listened and still are. Who's listening? How about a 26 year old from Alaska. Ever hear Too Darn Hot? Talent across the board. Another difference in what you said was me comparing Jewel to drug hippies. At what point did I say that? I said the idea that looks make legends compared to them. How come teenagers TODAY listen to them. I'm 25 and I listen to them and I've never had an illegal drug, besides a beer under 21. Does that mean I have to do drugs and be a hippie and everybody that likes them is too. Yet another difference is that I also never said that looks didn't effect sales in a shorter period of time because in that respect your absolutely right. But that's why I mentioned Debbie Gibson and Britney Spears. Britney's hot now but will eventually end up like Debbie Gibson on a VH-1 special of "Where are they now". That's also why I mentioned " "POP" music relies on looks. Not real music". In ten years people aren't going to be talking about how inspired they were by Britney Spears and unless she becomes a monsterous singer she will be doing Town Fairs very soon but Jewel's element has longevity because she doesn't rely on looks alone. True, she's beautiful and some of her fans are fans because of what she looks like but those fans will fade as she gets older. But the ones that "listen" to the music won't and that's most of her fans. Her music has enough emotion and feeling to keep a steady fan base so while Britney Spears makes all her money in a big wirlwind and suddenly disappears Jewel or singers like her might not make as much at first, but will still be around and still selling records and will eventually make more. A real quick point too. You think Barbara Streisand is Hot? Enough said. Now you also go on to reject your own statements. You say that if Jewel could slam dunk or hit a home run you would watch too. Wouldn't that be being interested in her talents? You want to see her hit a homerun, that takes talent. A person doesn't hit the ball with their face. So then let's use sports figures then. Let's say a baseball player does great one year and is the best in the league and is the best looking baseball player in the league also and the girls love his looks and the guys like his playing and he gets a huge paycheck because of it and makes millions. The next season he's not so good anymore but still good looking and progressively gets worse and older. Can you tell me that his looks are going to be a factor when he goes into contract renegotiations? Not at all. Moral being looks can take you so far but then when talent gets called to question the ones that have it will still be around regardless of how they look and will get the money. Talent would be that bottom line. Oh I forgot to mention. I'm sure Venis Williams is a goddess and Nike is paying her millions because of her looks too. And Tiger Woods must be a hearthrob. "Different" can also sell and stay a long time like some Rap and R&B groups. At one point nobody knew what Rap was and classified it as disco but it eventually made it and made money for the pioneers of it. Looks had nothing to do with it. I can go on and on. Two Live Crew was horrible, but people bought it and they were "BUTT" ugly. So so far you haven't proven anything, but helped my argument and I thank you for that. I needed those unproveable statements to solidify my convictions. Okay, I understand what you're saying and to a certain degree you are correct. Looks do sell. But think of it this way: Why is it when a painter creates a beautiful painting that is so beautiful because of how detailed, to every little single detail, it is sold for less than a Jackson Pollock splatter painting? That question will have different answers but it all comes down to raw emotion and talent. If you have both you have life, if you lack either one you're probably selling your last painting to hotel in Wisconsin no matter how beautiful you think it is. But I'm not here to argue because I have a feeling your about 15 or 16 years old and don't know any better yet anyway. Plus I'm writing this in general not really just to retract the original statements. I love music, especially Jewel's and at least we all agree that Jewel is a phenomenal singer, poet and talent. Am I right on that at least? ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V6 #63 **************************
