I'm on a roll. USA Today.com has a poll for your favorite one-named star, and Jewel is one of the six choices they give. Jewel, Madonna, Cher, Sting, Prince and Chad are the choices. I think Chad is a joke choice. Duh! You can find the poll at http://www.usatoday.com/life/lfront.htm and the latest results are not good at all. Of 95 votes thus far Jewel is in last place with 8.4% while Sting leads with 21%, but with the many EDAs here, we can easily blow away those 95 votes with a few hundred of our own. I am not sure, but I think these polls run for one day or two, so you better hurry! There I was sitting in this beautiful theatre at the 92nd Y which is at the corner of 92nd st and Lexington ave. in Manhatten sitting six rows away from the stage amist an audience of maybe 50 people. So personable and intimate She sat there with a guy who interviewed her. She talked about all kinds of things like her childhood stories and why she chose to write a book about them, her feelings on the idea of "becoming famous", how she was afraid of developing into the illusions that the media wanted to create of her, and even her upcoming album and tour!It lasted at least an hour, which from what i heard is much longer than her recent booksigning. She really talked away.. after each question, she would answer and then continue on into a relative story. Her mom who was sitting right behind me stood up to talk about HGH. Then she took questions - lots of questions from the audience. and afterwards had a signing where she even stood and let people take pictures with her! It was one of those awesome opportunities that I am really glad I didnt miss out on! She said that the record label has been hounding her in a way to have hits. Well personally, i think that the only reason the label wants artist to have hits is so they can get rich off their music. And in my opinion that's not right!!! I think if u're going to work at a record label, do it because you love music, not just to get rich! To many people in the music industry are just there to make money! And because of this, Great musicans like jewel get hounded for hits everytime a single or a cd comes out. This is a very sad part of our society. Money rules! And if u don't have any, your screwed! And if people want it, they will do anything they can to get it, even if it means distroying the true meaning of music, for the artists and their fans. And sooner or later they make the artists wish they never became a part of such a buisness. that's just my opinion have more to say about this issue but i have to go. adios amigos :0) smiles diana the earth angel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Nov 2000 12:34:51 EST From: JewelKGirl@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: Pop music I think that if Jewel did release a pop record... it would be fine. First of all, no record company is going to put THAT much money into an artist.. so that they can't make profit off 4 million. Second of all, let's COMPARE! (fun...) Madonna is one of the biggest female pop stars of all time. She's not really comparable to Jewel because people like her because of the image/trend setting thing.. and not necessarily because she writes amazing music. She's just fun. This is how much all of her records have sold in the US (don't forget she is considered one of the most successful female singers of all time): [from most recent backwards] 1. Music - 2 (millions) 2. Ray of Light - 4 3. Something to Remember - 3 4. Bedtime Stories - 2 5. Erotica - 2 6. The Immaculate Collection - 9 7. Like a Prayer - 4 8. True Blue - 7 9. Like a Virgin - 10 10. Madonna - 5 as you can see she's had the odd hit... but for the most part 2-5 million is about average. and don't forget, ray of light (4 million, not unlike spirit).. was considered a hit. now i know this doesn't include overseas sales... but Madonna is considered a very successful artist based on her US sales alone. Spirit was percieved as a "failure" because it didn't sell 10 million copies.. but it was never expected to.... nor should it have been It did better than most of the sophomore albums from huge 10 million selling artists. look at Alanis... her second album only went to 3 million.. and her unplugged only went Gold (Joy went platinum... if that's how you wanna compare it). Same with No Doubt. Tragic Kingdom sold 10 million... Return to Saturn is only at 2 I think. 4 million copies sold IS NOT BAD. it's actually very good.... and Spirit sold another 4 million overseas.. so she's not as unknown as everybody thinks. (most of those sales came from australia, new zealand, canada and asia.. but not europe) that's all i have to say steve ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V5 #430 ***************************
