I thought that I'd post a new conversation starter, to get our minds off of this whole jewel is mean/autograph/dumb-f*ck issue.... So, in honor of Thanksgiving, lets share what we're thankful for :) I'll start.... I'm thankful to be living in the wonderful state of Florida, where my vote counts... "Aye." I didn't join the EDA list to see nasty posts, I joined because I wanted a place to discuss Jewel, and nice things I see done around my community. I'd heard good things about the EDAs, and it was nice in the beginning. It's degrading fast, and there are times where I can tell just by the subject headers I get in the digest version of this list that most of what has been posted is kindergarten-esque hair-pulling and name calling. I don't want to see anything on this list about the US presidential election, or anything not relating to Jewel, or at least community service. In that vein, I wanted to boast that there is a new club at my college called S.A.S.S. -- Souls Advocating Service to Society. We have a direct line to Jewel here, through MrBB... If he tells Jewel what's been going on here, don't you think she'd be disappointed in what we've become? Can we just get back on-topic, here? Or at least move the vulgarity, and the nasty personal attacks to private email? (Or, optimally, both?) If not, I vote for full and immediate reinstatement of the moderation policy, no recounts. Who's with me? Be the difference that makes a difference. All opposed, say Nay. "Nay". Moderation is HARD WORK for Mike. Keep in mind, EDA is NOT Mike's life. He has a REAL job that PAYS him. If I recall correctly, he said that he is no longer "moderating" the list for reasons he'd rather not discuss.... (and also because of the time it involves.) Mike does alot for this list, even though he does not have alot of time to screen every single message that comes through, and I respect his decision to leave the list unmoderated. And on a more serious "I am thankful for" note.... I am thankful for Mike Connell! I think we should declare a "Mike Connell Appreciation Day" holiday. And just a thought.... instead of every year expressing our gratitude to Jewel for Christmas, (or in addition to?) We should express some gratitude to Mike. If it weren't for him, there would be no more eda list. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Nov 2000 15:39:53 -0800 From: Gerrit Subject: Re: [EDA] All in favor of reinstating moderation, say Aye. Nay!! If you're looking for a place to see that kinda stuff going on, join the news list and chat with those you know. :P Moderation has caused more headache for those doing the moderation and those trying to post than anything. Granted, it is a double edged sword, but I don't think the list warrants moderation right now. By the way.. the list would be as you're describing.. even moderation doesn't censor it THAT bad.. geez. Most Flagler County residents won't be finding this assortment on the table Thursday as part of the family's Thanksgiving feast, but for some 2nd graders at Bunnell Elementary School, this could be the meal for which to be thankful. As a class assignment recently, the youngsters in Tara Kicklighter's class made up a Thanksgiving menu -- and even offered suggestions on how to cook it. Alicia, who's menu is listed above, plans to buy a turkey and put it in the oven for four minutes. Classmates Shavesha and Tyler have a little different menus, but neither would be classified as traditional fare. Shavesha suggests a holiday meal of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, and a salad. The turkey has ro be put in a 50 degree oven "and cooked until it is done." The salad requires only lettuce and tomato, with a little "dressing meat." The green beans can be boiled for three minutes, "and then enjoy." Tyler is looking for a mix of traditional and just plain good. He suggests a menu of a turkey, chocolate cake, drinks, mashed potatos and, for a side touch, flounder. Now, to cook the turkey, Tyler suggests that you should have started this several days ago. "You take the turkey and cook it for three minutes for 10 days." he wrote. For mashed potatoes, you must take some mix and cook it for two minutes at 50 degrees in the oven. The flounder requires a different method. "How to cook a flounder: Go fishing. Catch a fish. Cook it for five minutes at 50 degrees," Tyler suggests. Patrick, like Tyler, wants a little fish with his turkey. His menu consists of turkey, fish, salad and dressing. For the turkey, he recommends an 80 degree oven with the bird cooking for one to three hours. As for the fish, well, Patrick suggests that you buy the fish, and then out it in the oven for an hour. Robby is a little more pragmatic when it comes to menus and cooking instructions. His lengthy list for a Thanksgiving meal is turkey, salad, cake, corn, mashed potatoes, green beans, strawberries, eggs, Coke and friends. To cook, Robby said the turkey takes 80 minutes, the salad takes 40 minutes, corn takes 6 minutes, mashed potatoes takes 20 minutes, eggs take 8 minutes and cookies take 90 minutes. Friends with that menu, he says, are instant. Amber is also expecting to sit down to a big holiday meal Thursday. Her menu consists of turkey, strawberry, green beans, cookies, salad, mashed potatos, eggs, cake and ice cream. She plans to buy a turkey and cook it at 108 degrees until it is done. The green beans she also will buy, and those are cooked at 80 degrees. The mashed potatoes are purchased and cooked at 109 degrees, while the eggs, also bought at the store, will be cooked at 89 degrees. Taylor has the day planned with a menu of turkey, eggs, pumpkin pie, rainbow pie, turkeyface pie, gravy, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and a feast festival. She says mom will buy the turkey, which she plans to cook at 95 degrees. The eggs will be put in a frying pan and scrambles. To make the pumpkin pie, she suggests that you "smash the pumpkin and bake it." A "turkeyface" pie requires you to make a pie and carve it. As for the "feast festival" that should be required for any holiday. Taylor said she included that as part of her holiday meal "to have people eat it with me." cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2000 03:48:24 From: "Rowdy White" Subject: Re: [EDA] All in favor of reinstating moderation, say Aye. Nay, Nay, Nay (okay I know that sounds real good since my last post was a flame to Kris, that appeared in my "inbox" next to Kris' apology to Mike, but...) As it was said before, on a technical side, we have no right to impose on Mike to be our common sense for us. (and no, I'm not saying that just because for awhile I thought Mike took some type of perverse pleasure in shooting down my posts =^ ) Without moderation allows everyone to see what people are really thinking, and that should not be taken away. If someone wants to make an ass of themselves by posting something, then so be it. I've done it many times, and invite everyone to laugh at me when I do. When worse comes to worse, just invoke the almightly Ignora, and just pass over posts from people that tend to anger you. You'll likely miss some interesting comments, but at least your blood pressure will be slightly lower...
