I haven't checked my mail in a while and I come on to find 8,000,000 e-mails about the same damn thing. How long has this gone on for now? My GOD!! Look at yourselfs. why do you feel the need to psycho analyze every thing she does? Is that the definition for "FAN?" And now your taking polls to see hoe many people think she's mean or not? Give me a freakakin break. So Jewel didn't sign an autograph for some poor disabled girl. Boo friggin hoo. Let it go. She's not mean, she was probably just worn out, and why shouldn't she be? My advice to you all is to LET IT GO. Please. (was that nice enough for ya?) Hello angels! How nice that Thanksgiving's coming, n'est-ce pas? SO I'm going to a soup kitchen for KEY Club with my friends and it's going to be so much fun. Yippie! Okay, next, I wanted to say I say a tidbit about Juel in Teen People about how she helped with HGH and everything, there was a pic, too. But it was mostly about like Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears. Huh. I was at Barnes and Noble looking at the TP and I heard Go Tell It On The Mountain and everything when I went in and strangely enough my brother recognized the song (I guess I played it too much...) I realized it's strange how people usually sell three or four albums before selling live albums but Juel started with a live album, which is one of the best things she's at, right? Subject: [EDA] logic vs emotion II THE FIXED VERSION My apologies..please delete the first post that went out because that was not fully done. Didn't run the spell check or re-write several areas. This is the accurate, at least as accurate as i can get it post and what i meant to say. Again, delete the other please and read this one if your going to read one. I felt compelled to address this issue. This is a long post and you can read at your own leisure.Understand that this post is coming from someone who is a long long time list member. Someone who lives in San Diego and someone who has experienced many of Jewel's 3hr coffee shows. Jewel did this. Jewel did that. This offends me. This doesn't offend me. I often avoid these conversations, these conversations being the general topics of who, what and why about Jewel's life. This conversation though i have to comment about because, essentially i see a larger issue is at stake. That being said, I am going to address some of those specific comments first, because i don't agree with them. Also, because i think an opposing view/opinion needs to be presented so people with opinion's/view's in the middle-of- the-road can have another view/opinion to look at. Something to keep in mind as far as all of my comments go, I am not making any comment to change the minds of people who believe one set way or the other. That would just turn into an argument and quite frankly waste a lot of time. I simply don't belive my comments are going to change the way you think, if your mind is already set in its way and its belief's. There is a chance however, that my comments may sway you one way or the other, if you are middle-of-the-road people about these issues. That being said, here are my responses to specific comments. I have cut and pasted the specific comments so there is no misquoting. >To: mjawt@juno.com >Subject: Re: [EDA] the whole autograph thing >Cc: Jewel@smoe.org > >Hey Sparks if your gonna quote me Please use the Whole thing..... But if she is not down with her Fans! her homies, the people that >KEEP her employed, then she is Nothing.....Nothing with out us..... > Of course we all matter, but not because we support her "career". We matter because human beings, all human beings have the same worth. Young, old, disabled, active, etc. Her "career would suffer, the amount of money she made would suffer, but she would be far from "nothing". Shes a musician and as such her ability to write a song, her ability to sing in that wonderful three register voice, her ability to ad lib while she sings live, her ability to try new directions and ideas with her songs, all of that easily seen musical talent would continue to exist. Logically, all of that is true, regardless of the amount of records she sells, the amount of tickets she sells, and the amount of people she chooses to be friendly or unfriendly too. Further, to say that there would be "NO" jewel if "we didn't buy her stuff" or "go to her shows", isn't logical. Are we to think that 2000-2500 EDA, are the ones that helped her to sell millions of albums? Helped her to sell all her books? Helped her to sell out her large venue shows? No, logically if we subtract the 2500 potential customers in the EDA, how much does that impact the sales of her "stuff". Not much, and that means that she would be still as large as she is. It's just not logical to think that without you or me or any other EDA as a fan, she stops being a musician. Jewel will always have her musical talents regardless of who's buying her music or tickets or etc. Well if you look at this logically, her job would be to make music. Which she does and then releases an album with that music. She also plays shows that support that music. She happens, because of her success, to have the benefits of selling books and other artsy things that tap her other artistic/creative sides. If her job is to make music, does she have to sign autographs?, thank people?, let people take pictures? No, her job is to simply make music. When did making music have anything to do with those things above. It never has had anything to do with that, never will. Again, lets be logical here, her making music has nothing to do with her being "down" with her "fans". How can a single point of view be attributed to the millions and millions of fans, it logically cant. That statement is more accurate to the small group of EDA on the list, which again numbers about 2500. Logically do the math, how much are we going to effect her ability to be "employed". She's going to continue to sell many albums regardless if the EDA are buying them or not. >From: Agent BB > > >This issue of Jewel cursing out her fans and being >rude isn't the first time it's been discussed. Now if >Jewel was only a jurk once in awhile 1) No one would >know, because it would be rare. 2) We would never hear >about it. But for example I remember reading how >Jewel was a jurk when making the movie RWTD, and a >personal experience from me who only "met" jewel once >was at the HGH benefit concert in LA, where I yelled >"Thank Me!" and she yelled back "F U I dont even know >you" Now this was in front of the whole crowd being >taped I can only imagine what she would have done or >said if there were only a few people around. >So people need to give up on the "no one is perfect" >idea and "everyone has bad moods", because face it >Jewel is in a bad mood a lot more often then other >people and celebs, which is proven true with all the >personal experiences people have told. >The best thing to do when Jewel tells you to screw off >or flips you off is to just laugh it off. (But Jewel >needs to relize this(laughing) is hard to do, when it >is coming from someone you love) >BB Indeed it isn't the first time its been discussed on this group. Sense it's a group about jewel, why wouldn't you hear the bad with the good. We seem to hear about every little thing because, this group is a small specific group based on Jewel and her music. It should be all about her music, and information about that music. Of course, it has become about what she wears, who shes dating, how she acted, etc . Sense all that info comes through, that's why we hear about her sometimes behaving in someway that offend someone. Negative comments get noticed, not good. More often then not, good comments don't even get sent because its expected for an artist to act in that way. Remember too, the time the public sees her at a show type situation is such a small percentage of time compared to her whole life. Knowing that, you cant assume anything with the limited microcosm of information you have about her interaction with other people from this list vs her whole public interaction. You cant assume that you think you know how Jewel acts any certain way, offensive in this case, more then some of the time. Logically your not getting anywhere near the whole picture of how she acts as a person. >From: JewelKGirl@aol.com >Received: from JewelKGirl@aol.com > by imo-d04.mx.aol.com (mail_out_v28.33.) id p.a6.c3430dc (4256) > for ; Sat, 18 Nov 2000 23:49:41 -0500 (EST) >Message-ID: >Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2000 23:49:41 EST >Subject: [EDA] Re: meet and greet > > >Jewel has no right to disregard the people that she has attracted with her >music. I'm glad that my songs that >I have written really suck. Goodnite. > > >Allena No one is saying she is too good to meet with her fans. That's a matter of your perception, shaped by what your reading on this list. Logically, if Jewel did say "she's done", how would that really effect the fact that she's famous and having to deal with the world.? Not much that i can see. If she said she was giving up the music business, would this suddenly make her less famous? Less approached? Logically you would have to say of course not. You cant undo whatever amount of fame you have. While i am talking about fame, where did this idea that she wanted to be famous come from? Again, shes a musician, she makes music, that has nothing to do with being famous. I am not looking to argue about if she is famous, she is. At least famous as in terms of the modern celebrity. Just because you become famous when your music sells in large amounts doesn't mean she was looking to be famous. Let's logically think about the comment "fame and fortune require time and people". I can only assume from the comments following it, it means that you have to deal with people and loose your time if your famous. If we assume jewel act's in an offensive manner a large amount of the time, and i am not saying she does, but we are following the logic of the statement, and she is still as successful as she is, why would she change? Logically she wouldn't, so that argument doesn't hold up to examination. She act's exactly how she acts and that is not going to change, because shes not worried about the fame, because she is successful. For Jewel her fame and fortune require nothing more then what she already does. What i think the whole larger issue is about is simply, are you listening to jewel's music because it is about the "music" or are you listening to jewel's music because the music means something "more" to you? The "more" can be a lifestyle, a belief, ideas it inspires you to, ways you think you should act in your life because of the music, etc. The "it is about the music" is because you want to see how her songs emotionally move you, how long she can hold a note, how she uses her musical influences to effect her singing, etc. I of course am in not way saying one way saying one or the other is the proper reason you should be listening to Jewel's music. So if you listen to her because "it's about the music" for you. Then you have no problem following the ensuing logic. You accept her musical talents and separate anything she does as a person from them. Because those talents are what they are, amazing and unique within the music industry. If you can do that, then you can say to yourself, "well she did this or that, and its good or bad, but it doesn't change any of the talent or ability she has as far as music is concerned". On the other hand, if your one why listens because of the "more", then its going to be much harder for you to follow that logic. You as a person who thinks that way , really has to accept the fact that you cant separate what she does as a person from her musical talents. If that is the case, then I have no right to tell you that you shouldn't feel a certain way when you read or experience Jewel doing something to offend you. What i can say is, try to apply some logic to your feelings and separate those emotions from her musical talents and what you think of those talents. Does any one of her songs become less moving to you, less well sung, less well performed because she did whatever? Let me end this long ramble with the following. Its great to be passionate about things. It shows that you care about things and that you have emotions that run deep to help take something beyond the ordinary. Given that fact, I will readily state that i am passionate about music. I am passionate about the music jewel makes, about her musical talent. Sense its about the music, always about the music for me, I never let anything other then the music effect what i think of the music. I would hope that the ones of you that her music means "more": to you, you can think about that and try to come to the same common ground about how you let her actions effect you. It should always be about the music. The music. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Nov 2000 19:18:33 -0500 From: Shannon Mackie Subject: [EDA] Jewel is mean Don't worry I'm not going to rattle on about Jewel being mean. Think of it this way. Jewel is in no way OBLIGATED TO US FOR ANY REASON. If you think so, it would be best not to say it. Besides, what if she got sick, she wouldn't make it a priority to tell us. We are the ones that are obligated to her, for her sharing of her dreams and art is a big present to us. Furthermore, I don't know what this whole thing is about, and really, I don't care.
