Eric Levenchuck ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2000 01:51:19 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] the whole autograph thing I think it's somewhat ridiculous to critisize Jewel for not feeling like having a fan "meet and greet". Frankly, it's not her job to serve her fans. It's unhealthy to be completley selfless. Tell me you haven't done a selfish thing once in your life? It's human nature. For this one time that she decided not to come and meet her fans, there have been countless times when she HAS come out and spent time with her fans. And for all the times that she's been rude and bitchy (cause we're never in a bad mood.. ever)... there have been times when she's been really nice and friendly. I think the fact that she doesn't fake her way through everything is part of the reason that her lyrics DO ring true. If she's annoyed that she has to sign autographs.. she acts annoyed. The one thing she preaches above basically anything (especially in terms of what she wants to GIVE) is honesty... she would be hypocritical if she were to pretend that she wanted to be signing autographs or meeting crippled children.. I think it's very easy for one of us to say how we would most definitely go and meet the disabled... but think about it from Jewel's perspective. She played hundreds of concerts last year.... every night there is some disabled person, or some obsessive fan, or some cancer victim or some person who EXPECTS Jewel to come and hug them... and frankly, it must get a little draining. I mean I know these people are not having the best time, but it is NOT Jewel's responsibility to make it better for them. You (the person who originally wrote in) feel sorry for the girl because you saw her and met her .. but to Jewel this person is just another person in the sea of fans constantly seeking her attention. Jewel is not going to acknowledge every single one of us. I will concede, it's a bitchy thing to do on Jewel's part.. to ignore a disabled person because you don't feel like it... What I'm saying is that I think it's easy to see why she would, and I'm saying I think it's ridiculous that we hold Jewel in such a light that she can't be like all of us - that is, not entirely selfless. I think it's a reflection on how modern society sees celebrities. We seem to think that because a person is a celebrity they must all of a sudden be perfect and selfless and serve our every need. We gasp when celebrities do the things that we ourselves do. A lot of you will probably see this as just another "Jewel is never wrong" spiel. It's not, and if it was it would completely undermine my point. The reason i LIKE Jewel is because she's not perfect.. and she doesn't PRETEND to be. Yes it would have been NICE if she greeted the disabled child... but she didn't want to.. and so be it. That doesn't make her music a crock of shit.. it simply makes her selfish at times - which we all are. steve ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2000 02:45:06 EST From: NEILER1@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: cerritos show I just wanted to say after seeing her 7 times live i would have to say that this show was one of her best performances. I have two problems with it now. The second time she hit's "aint just *lying*", she's completely off key, and it really irks me. It just sounds awful. The worst that I've ever heard Jewel sound. I love her voice, and think she's wonderful, but she just missed that note. Also, as far, as I can make out, the last lyrics int he songs are, "do you do you wanna wanna, wanna wanna, do you wanna wanna do me? Yakto do you? do you, do you wanna wanna catch a cold with me? To record this, here the little trick i used. You have usally 3 holes on the sound card. Input Output and Mic (which is another input type) well your output goes to your speakers, or you can run a wire to a radio tuner or whatever. So Run a wire (like a walk man wire, but with both ends Male) run that for the Out put TO the Input, and just start the Real player video, as soon as that starts, you need to start a recording program.... I use Music Match iTs Free and works great. musicmatch.com you can choose to save it as a Wav. or Mp3 or what ever, but make sure on Options that the LINE IN is selected. and just press record and then once its all done, plug your speakers back in and your good to go.... i think if you get a spilter you can plug your speakers in also while you Loop back to your sound card. Also that sucks about Jewel and that concert and not coming out to see the girl in the wheelchair. I wish she or ALL celbs would spend more time with the PEOPLE that matter, they Thank us at the awards time, and say its all about the FANS but we dont get that much love! and what about an EDA concert??? There was one like 16 years ago...ok like 4 years ago, Jewel since your in CA throw a EDA~CA concert, or maybe in Utah or Texas, Just have a Fan fest where you and steve will just hang with us!! Thats whats so AWESOME about Country music, they have a HUGH FanFest every year, with about 20-30 big shots that you can chat with get pictures and autographs and see concerts and all that cool stuff! I still dont hold this against Jewel, since i wasnt there, and i dont know if the crew really told Jewel anything, they could be lazy or could not have found jewel, who knows its a big what if, it still sucks and sad, and Mariah i am not trying to down play what you saw, and i hope it doesnt sound like Out of sight out of mind, there could be other factors, but if not that is a COLD thing to do...... i always have/had a dream if i were ever famous (which i doubt) i would always sign autographs, and spend time with the fans, and just have fun, and be there for them.... Ok this email is long, i will let you all go. Kevin...an EDA if there is still such a thing...... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2000 01:54:49 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: [EDA] escondico review there was a review of the escondico show in a local paper: Jewel gets familiar with local crowd DAN BENNETT Staff Writer Again at home, Jewel kicked back, relaxed and said what she pleased Wednesday night in Escondido. Playing to a nearly sold-out crowd at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, the folk-pop singer delivered a nearly two-hour set offering spontaneity and several new songs, lacking the formality of a concert tour performance. With her album "Spirit" already long peaked on the charts, Jewel is playing a series of concerts in theaters as she auditions new material and allows the audience to choose the other songs she performs. The 26-year-old Rancho Santa Fe resident, whose 1995 album "Pieces of You" sold 11 million copies, making it one of the top five-selling albums of all time by a female performer, opened her Escondido concert with two new songs. She then threw things open, beginning a string of self-deprecating jokes that would continue throughout the evening. "So many hard decisions," Jewel said in a ready-for-my-close-up voice. "It's tough being a rich rock star." Playing alone in an all-acoustic show, Jewel launched into "So Close to Heaven" from her 1999 tour, then slowed down but became intense with the poignant "Little Sister." The metaphor-heavy sex satire "Race Car Driver" followed not long after, then Jewel again invited requests from the audience, who obeyed en masse. "You're trying to trick me with all the obscure ones," Jewel said in mock complaint. Soon after, longtime pal and songwriting partner Steve Poltz joined Jewel on stage, at which time Jewel began making jokes about Britney Spears, insisting she could dance and sing at the same time, as Britney does, then proved it. Jewel and Poltz sang a new song, "Valentine," so new that Poltz had to whisper the lyrics to Jewel as she sang them. The duo then offered a flubbed and funny version of the mega-hit "You Were Meant for Me," a song the two had written together long before Jewel became famous, filled with giggles and an improvised lyric mentioning the new film "Charlie's Angels," including a sung complaint by Jewel that "Cameron Diaz made me feel so fat." Jewel showed the crowd her new book of memories, "Chasing Down the Dawn," and chose a poem to read, settling in on a short and not-so-sweet childhood remembrance of her family's mean goat, whom they killed and ate, apparently with untasty results. A clean, inspired variation of "Hands" followed, illustrating perhaps her most completely realized song, then Jewel closed with "Who Will Save Your Soul," an overstretched piece of simple wisdom that despite its featherweight content, allows Jewel to show off a truly amazing vocal reach. The lullaby "Chimes" closed the encore. Jewel might dig a little too deep in some of her more poetic songs, which seem to fragment easily, but she also has a firm grasp on the wants of her intensely loyal following, and a seemingly endless potential, should she choose to continue challenging herself. Her Escondido concert showed a Jewel able to laugh and easily connect inbetween crises. Poltz opened the show with a spirited, friendly performance that included his hit "Everything About You," a trio-sung "Silver Lining" with San Diego Padres third base coach Tim Flannery and his brother, and "The Area Code Song," telling of Poltz's great dismay at being switched from 619 to 858 without his having a say. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V5 #406 ***************************
