Folk-pop singer-actress-poet-yodeler superstar Jewel has published her
journal, "Chasing Down the Dawn," based on scribbling from her Spirit World
tour. Jewel has already angered many with her book of poetry, "A Night
Without Armor," which apparently sold more copies than the Bible and Rod
McKuen put together. This journal promises to feed the masses of fans as
well.

The thing to remember about Jewel is she is a tremendously talented singer
and songwriter, the author of "Who Will Save Your Soul?," one of the most
beautiful and touching songs since Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car." It's also
important to remember that there is no shame in reading rock autobiography.
When trapped in a room of highbrow readers, simply say, "I'm sorry, I'm
still in the middle of Angie Bowie's 'Backstage Passes,' " and walk away.

Angie, however, had dirt to dish (if you recall - oh admit it, if you're
reading this review you probably read that - catching Mick with David, etc.
etc). You won't get that here. Why? Because, like Joan Baez, Jewel is
absolutely genuine. When she writes, "That night we slept in the home of
the tribal chief" it's simply a statement of fact. Jewel, in her own words,
is "one of the last of America's children to be raised with a first-hand
feel for the pioneer spirit. ... Between the ages of eight and sixteen I
lived for various lengths of time in fourteen different houses, urban and
rural, trailers, and cabins. From sixteen to nineteen I lived in eleven
other houses, dorms, apartments - and, of course, one now-famous car."

Like Dorothy, Jewel just wants to go home. The theme of home is endlessly
repeated, since these are writings from the road. But what home? The Alaska
homestead where she lived with her brothers and father, the tundra even
Jewel makes fun of? ("Girl Raised by Wolves in Alaskan Mud Hut," she
writes.) Or that San Diego van she lived? Jewel comes to the conclusion
that her voice is home, the voice, "that tells you everything you need to
know."

But if you want to know more, you can read about her impressive and
eclectic grandmother, an opera student and the first female Alaskan
journalist, or her grandfather, a scholar who spoke eight languages, and
her truly interesting parents, particularly her mother, Nedra, who taught
her how to "manifest dreams" by breaking down goals step by step.

Nedra's encouragement and courage helped Jewel snag a $13,000 scholarship
to Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. Nedra also suggested that Jewel
follow her dreams and live in the van. (You just can't get enough of that
van. It's like Nutbush or Butcher Hollow.) Jewel went from "living on five
dollars a day to attending [the Grammys] in a $14,000 dress."

Her revelations about fame aren't exactly new, but they are simply stated.
In one incident a woman confronts her for an autograph, yelling, "Don't you
remember what it's like to be poor?" The woman tells her Jewel can feed her
children on the resale of her autograph. Jewel feels terrible, and
contemplates fame while someone else is pressing 60 photos on her:

"Would I feel better if I signed every photograph someone shoves my way?
Would I be cleansed if I signed all sixty. ... And these were two people on
one morning. What if there were a hundred people a day with ten pictures
each? What is enough? Was I to believe that my scrawl on a piece of paper
would make or break another human being?"

There are passages about weird stalker fans, people who confront her in
bathrooms, make fun of her snaggled tooth. There are also bits of poetry,
sketches and photographs. "Chasing Down the Dawn" is a grazer journal with
too much sugar and not enough spice for rock-bio aficionados. For instance,
a passage like, "I hope the world religions come to see that their
similarities are greater than their differences. I hope to see people stop
killing in the name of God" is followed by "I leave after the appetizers to
catch the end of Springsteen's show, which rocks."

Jewel's journal doesn't have the emotional impact that her performances do,
but that's OK. Her voice is her home.

By the way, you seriously gotta tell us your name.  It's weird
addressing this to a woman/girl when the name on top says Ronald :) 
Could you please tell us your name?

In case anyone else hasn't figured it out by now, the misquoted lyrics are
*intentional* and always have been.  "Ronald" likes doing this to get a
reaction- there's no point in correcting him.

I'm with the majority of the EDAs on this, that Ronald (or whoever) should at 
least verify lyrics (s)he posts are correct, or, like some have suggested, if 
he's a troll he should bug off.

Anyway. I thought a bit about the wrong lyrics (s)he posts, and I thought, "I 
wonder if there are any lyrics to Jewel songs that EDAs have misheard." 
Hmm... Offhand I can't think of any but will be sure to post some if I do.
