You guys, Jewel really didn't change her style as drastically as you are making it out to be. I thought i'd send it to the list just to voice my opinions as well. sean, I think in many ways you're right about the quality of the two songs Jewel debuted this week. They're not that great. I quite like listening to them because I like the tune of Serve the Ego and what she does to her voice (particularly on the Leno version) in Shadows Play. Serve the Ego is relatively chatchy (to me), and in Shadows Play she pulls off that deep Fiona Apple-esque vocal style quite nicely. Lyrically, however, they're not of that "excellent" standard that you (and I) would hope for. I think with Jewel, you cannot expect excellence every time. That, to me, is because she is an artist that has in no way hit her stride yet. Lyrically especially, her writing is very much a hit-and-miss operation. I think she writes things very instinctively. She's not the kind of artist that spends months slaving over one song. Radiohead do that. That's why Radiohead has NEVER put out anything mediocre.. they spend so much time perfecting it. It's different with Jewel. I think you'll find that in some instances her "instinct" will produce something that's very good, and sometimes not. I think she's written very few songs that could be considered "amazing" or "brilliant". I don't think anybody should expect her to be producing anything like that. I think she has the talent (as you said), but she isn't an experienced songwriter. Nor has she the perspective of somebody a little older and more experienced in life. She CAN be a good songwriter, but she has obviously only explored a few channels of what songwriting is, and what you can do with music. That's why I think it's OK if she wants to explore other areas. She's not necessarily going to put those two songs on her next CD. She likes to try things out in performances. There are tons of songs that she's performed in the past, but never used. You cannot expect excellence everytime from an artist like Jewel... because she's still experimenting. She probably always will be. She knows it too. As far as your comments about Spirit... Pieces of You isn't that much better. In fact, I think they're very comparable. In terms of writing, Pieces of You has ONE song that I would consider verging on "amazing".. and that's Amen. Other than that there's nothing special... but it shows promise, right? Spirit is essentially a more polished version of the same thing (but much more optimistic, which I thought was a very admirable thing to do, considering the lack of artists that actually convey anything optimistic or idealistic). I will concede, there is no Amen... but there's a handful of decent songs (down so long, barcelona, do you, absence of fear, enter from the east) that show improvement in song writing (I think). It's nothing brilliant, but I thought it was a nice step forward. And 1999's tour was fine too. She was expected to perform Spirit with a band and therefore the setlists had to be similar. In 1996 few people HAD Pieces of You, so she was expected to do what she could to get people to buy it. So many people who went to the Spirit Tour would've been sorely dissapointed had she not played most of the album. She did debut some new stuff along the way, but it's hard to teach a band that's been playing with you for only a couple of months a lot of new stuff. I think that in that situation they needed a setlist. Oh, and the performance at Woodstock was basically a shortened version of that "mediocre" tour that you were talking about, minus the acoustic section (which was varied quite extensively every night). I think you have a lot of good points, but I think you express yourself in a way that is very reminiscent of a hack music critic ala spin magazine... and nobody wants to hear that. Jewel fans don't LIKE cynics; that should be fairly obvious. You say you expect excellence from Jewel, but it's not that so much, it's that you expect her to deliver what you like. None of us CAN expect that. I wish she'd record a heavier album (I was also very impressed with the rock stuff in her concerts).. but she probably won't. I'm not gonna bash her for it; I'll still follow cause I'm interested. Nobody wants to hear you rant, and completely destroy the opinions of others. That's what causes fights (which I won't involve myself in). I think maybe you could lighten up somewhat.. but obviously it's your choice. this was long, thanks for reading (if you did). steve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Oct 2000 20:42:16 -0400 From: "Jupiter" Subject: [EDA] Katnip Prrrrr, prrrr, prrrrr Well the list has certainly been lively lately. So many opinions about so many different things. I liked this, I hated that, she sounds like an angel, she sounds like nails on a chalk board, your a this, that, the other thing, I know you are but what am I? Kewel. Its good to see so many people participating and sharing thier opinions. Thats what this list is all about after all now isn't it. Keep in mind that Jewel can use this to get feedback on what everyone thinks of her efforts. Don't for a minute think that everything said here doesn't reach her. Everything. I really love to see the different opinions. If this list were just one sided all the time that would get pretty boring. When you see so many people saying they loved this or they hated that, what you are really seeing are people expressing a little thing called "truth". Now here is something we can all agree on, "truth is a good thing". I'm sure Jewel treasures the fact that she can have the list printed out for her and read first hand, from people that she trusts, the truth about thier opinions, likes and dislikes. It helps her to balance her decisions. On the one hand she wants to do as she wants to do and express her creativity in a way that she finds fufilling. By the same token she wants to make all her audience happy and make her label a ton of money. Somewhere inbetween those two goals lay her next CD. This list can be a very valuable tool for her to use and its probably very fun (sometimes) for her to hear so many different things about herself. Want to make this "tool" even more helpful for her? Its really simple to do. Just say what you feel. If you didn't like a song, say that. If you didn't like it, say you didn't like it. Don't feel like you have to like everything she puts out. Just be honest and she'll appreciate that. If someone says they don't like a song, say why you don't like the song. If you disagree with someone and think the song is the greatest thing since sliced bread then post a little message and tell everyone why "you" loved the song. Don't post why you think so and so is a blankity, blank! Why you like vanilla and they like chocolate is pretty lame to have to read through. But what they din't like and what you did like is a valuable piece of info that everyone, including Jewel can benefit from. If you really feel the need and are just busting to swap words with someone then just copy out thier address and send them your thoughts. Just remember what Jewel says, "words can hurt things unseen". Its easy to hurt others, sometimes too easy. Try to be truthful and try not to be hurtful. You'll feel better, honest. Pretty simple huh? A nice little truth on a sunny Sunday morning. So be yourself, say what you feel and don't say something to another you wouldn't want them to say to you. Thats called "The Golden Rule". Not sold in stores, available to everyone, everywhere. Try it sometimes, I think you'll like it. It just feels right. Nuff said. Have a great big sun shiny day people, Your friend, TigerMoon (The Meow,Meow,Meow - Angel) PS. Oh! and don't forget to root for Tye like Jewel asked. He's in second place right now. Good luck Tye!!!! Meow, Meow, Meow!!!!! Thats tigey for break a leg kiddo!!!! Thats what your supposed to say to actors and such, never jinx them by saying good luck. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 00:48:51 GMT From: "Louise Tamblyn" Subject: [EDA] just a thought Hi Everyone, Just thought I'd poke my head up and hope it doesn't get blown off. I was wondering if we are going to do the Christmas card and donation thing again this year. It worked out well last year and Jewel seemed to appreciate it. Also it might bring the group abit closer after all the fighting.....maybe. Anyway just a thought.
