This is why these things should be kept off the list and only directed to the person they want to attack. Now you are wasting your energy getting into their argument. That's an order. Hi everyone. Sorry to intrude upon the war zone here. For those of you new here, I am the dude that is known as the "list owner", who until recently had the list in full moderation, meaning all posts were screened (for nearly 3 years, by the way). I am not going to discuss at this time the reasons for the change from moderated to unmoderated. Hopefully later. What I am going to address is the degree of flaming going on. I knew this would not take too long, and I am almost surprised it took over two weeks to boil over. Like it or not, we have a new list policy in effect. Have a debated discussion if you wish. That is really what this list is partially for. Difference of opinion is NOT fighting...it is.....well, the sharing differing opinions. When it gets heated, that is generally when it turns into fighting. We have seen some of that the last few days unfortunately. So, go ahead and offer differing opinions. Keep in mind this though....for many various reasons I and many others do not at all appreciate on-list flaming and I myself will have a low tolerance for it. I do not want to hear "we are adults Mike, we can handle this". Well, it's obvious some folks can't. I also do not want to hear the same old lame "freedom of speech" horse bleep. That does not apply in a privately owned forum, even though it is freely open to the public. So, the basic new policy is....NO NAME CALLING. Period. This is not the place for it...off-list is fine by me, if you want to sink that low. Call someone a name on-list, you get a warning.....let's call it a demerit. Do it again and from that point on ALL of your posts will be held up for approval. Not sure how long that would last, likely not more than 12 years or so. ;-) While I have already told one list member that he now has a demerit on his ledger, another is being sent out right after I click send for this post. I have gotten more than a few private complaints and do not have the time to deal with it all right now. There are more than a few reasons this is not to be tolerated. Reasons that go beyond the fact that it is against basic netiquette and simply is not nice. (I would bet a weeks' pay that all of this weeks' name callers would NOT have done it face-to-face if the person they called the name were right in front of them....which, in my opinion is a good rule of thumb anyway....to curb the chance of going overboard in a post and sending on one that is too heated, just think if you really would say the exact same thing to the other person face to face. I doubt most of us would). The list has a freedom right now it has not seen since November 1997. Please do not abuse it. Just because you don't *like* Jewel's new song doesn't mean you can't respect her as a musician/artist or the song itself. Show a little tact, show a little respect. You can say "Okay, Jewel's taken a new path as an artist, and I can respect that. After all it is *her* decision." I'm not trying to tell you what to think, as everyone is entitled to their own opinions.. but this is not an "I hate Jewel" mailing list.. and if you respect Jewel as an artist I think you'd stop and think about the reviews of the songs that have been posting. This is just MY opinion. Please don't hold it against me. Hi everyone, I was just thinking about peoples post's and thinking how people react to Jewel differently. Barry Howarth and someone else mention they'd be following Jewel in anything she does. I can't understand this? If Jewel changed her music, and its a style you normally wouldnt listen to, why follow her just for the sake of it?? I know myself I have a wide range of music tastes, and as long as its not too heavy or not toooo country or not tooooo pop, then chance are Id like it. By why follow Jewel if it isnt your music? I will always like what Jewel stands for, like her as a person as much as one can like someone they've never met. But if Jewel chances her music style that I dont like I highly doubt Id buy her CD... I personally think it's great that she's trying new styles. Good for her. Thats one reason why I really respect her. She can do the sweet girly vocals and next be very strong. She has an amazing voice. Wonder whats next for Jewel now? Shes done proffesional :singing, writing - poetry and the short stories and songs as well, acting. What other entertaining arts is there left to do? *L* Good on her. I think that JEWEL WAS SO SO GREAT IN JAY LENO! I was so excited in seeing her again in TV... its been so long since I saw her last time! Anyway, Shadows Play is a great song... very smooth, very sensual, it has nice instrumentation and as a song it is great... the composition is very good. She performed it excellently... she showed us that she has a very versatile voice. I've listened the song like 10 times now, and I really love it!!! And I loved the interviewe she did... although it was small and didn't speak a lot about the book... well, not anything that could be used to promote her book! Anyway, she seemed SOOOO excited about Ty! I thought that was cute! :) I have a question... its about the song 'Partial to Mary'... this may sound very stupid, but I'll ask it anyway! Well, the song kinda resembles in a way the plot of 'There's Something About Mary'. I haven't read the lyrics or anything, so I am not sure... but from what I've heard it seems to me that I suits the movie. Did she wrote for that? Well, this is my last question and I'll swear I won't bother again, this time its about 'Chasing Down the Dawn'... are there any plans for the book to be selled in other countries, such as Peru here in South America. Do anyone of you have or know where I could get this info??? Well take care angels, I can wait for Jewel's next CD!!!! Jewel tried a different style, on Spirit. The over-produced mediocre studio musicians style. Then was the following tour. That was the lame-ass same setlist every night, boring, half-full venues concert style. Some artists can pull off different styles, from Bob Dylan going electric or REM's crossover from college radio phenoms to mainstream success. Others have tried it and it hasn't worked as well: U2's last 2 albums(and now they are returning to their roots with their new single and upcoming album), Bruce Springsteen abandoning the E Street Band(only to reunite for amazing 2 year tour and hopefully a new album). And so on and so on. When Jewel switches "styles" successfully, I will be the first to praise her. In fact, I already have. I liked when she began incorporating rock aspects into her previously folkier songs. I like "Down" and "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" and even the vamped up "Race Car Driver." Jewel's set at Woodstock I thought was very good. So believe me, I'm not as critical and harsh as a lot of people think. I just expect excellence and shouldn't have to settle for less. It's not like she doesn't have the talent. One of the only reasons I'm still on this list are because of people like Sean. Although I think I've agreed with about 5% of his posts, I always see some truth value in them, and they are always fun to read and think about. A much needed refresher after all of the "Jewel is so cool!!!!" posts. If anyone's interested I semi-like both serve the ego and shadows play. Neither struck out to me, and I probably wouldn't give either much of a chance if it weren't jewel, but I don't think I'll be listening to them too much.
