I thought she was just going to promote the book at first, but then Magic Johnson kept talking and talking and talking, until she only had performance time left, so I figured she'd do "Break Me".. Then I was blown away by this beautiful song.. I knew some of you would hate it, but I thought it was absolutely stunning.. It keeps growing on me too.. It's amazing.. I love it.. She seems to have a red theme going on, doesn't she? I love red, and it looks great on her =) Scott Evans -- scott@tanweb.com Planet Jewel -- http://jewel.tanweb.com my page -- http://tanweb.com/scott i look at the cross / then I look away give you the lungs to blow me away i've watched a change in you it's like you never had wings now you feel so alive deftones, 'change (in the house of flies)' ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Oct 2000 01:22:27 EDT From: Sean35RL@aol.com Subject: [EDA] When will Jewel realize...(Letterman) ...that she is neither Paul Simon's Graceland, nor is she Tina Turner singing "Private Dancer." In all seriousness though, yes it is good to venture in new musical directions every now and then, but the whole African-influenced thing is tough to pull off for a white girl from Alaska. At least she's playing guitar again. Back-up singers are almost never a good idea, and this is another example of such. Jewel's strength will eventually come to the fore when she realizes her greatness lies in minimalism. As for the song, lyrically it seemed kinda vague: something about a disco ball, the subjugation of women(a la "Enter From the East"), and getting on your hands and knees before either an ego or eagle, I couldn't figure out what she was saying. I definitely need to hear this song again before passing judgment. I must admit it is moderately intriguing, but it's more arrangement than content. There are relatively few lyrics. Her vocal delivery was a departure as well, for the most part. Not sure what to think of that yet either. And she looked fine(not tawdry as someone else's post recently implied, would you people be happy if she started wearing burlap sacks perhaps), not an offensive amount of make-up as in the past. And the red dress was pretty, but again, a little too Tina Turner and her hair a little too Farrah Fawcett. But her appearance is of little importance although it is often overanalyzed here. No one seems to know what the song was yet. For some reason she(Atlantic Records I prob'ly should say) had Letterman promore the Joy CD along with her new book. She didn't get to talk, just the quick performance. Which, if you ask me, makes little sense. She's not promoting an album, she's promoting her book. Why not just skip the song altogether and do an interview AS AN AUTHOR, if she expects to be taken seriously as one? Seems kinda counterproductive to perform a song with no album. And the book signing tomorrow was not mentioned either. Well, that's my take on things. Moderately intriguing song, didn't love it, but at least it's different. And again, would've rather heard her talk about her writing. Later, Sean Hooks ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Oct 2000 02:00:18 EDT From: HaRt0Jewel@aol.com Subject: [EDA] What a Shock! Hålo Ångels I must say that I am quite shocked by the reaction from the 'new' song. I just think that its a little rude of you guys to be so hypocritical & so unopened to new things. I mean I know that every 1 is entitled to their own opinions n what not- but must your opinions be so rudely & so inconsiderately put? Geez! You kids always think *Jewel* has to please each & every 1 of u all the time. GOSH! Lighten up. ~Tamarrah, the Ångel who wants to be a Beautiful Precious Gem like Jewel..when she grows up! (P.S. I think that the word "hate" is a very harsh term, and should not be used to describe anything at all. I havent seen too many posts on the book, and dont believe that i have seen ANY reviews whatsoever. So here I go *dont worry itll be short* ;). I thoroughly enjoyed the book, a lot more than ANWA (which i enjoyed as well). The book put me on an emotional rollercoaster to say the least. There were times where i had a huge grin on my face, times when i was in tears, times when i was hysterically laughing, times when i felt a sense of warmth and love, times where i felt awe and wonderment, and times where i felt compassion and understanding. This book achieved one major thing, an important thing that cannot be reached easily: It showed me the essence of being human. *the mystic angel* Jordana "I'd rather see the world from another angle."-Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Oct 2000 03:51:56 -0400 From: Scott Evans Subject: [EDA] Barnes & Noble 'Chasing...' review A review of Jewel's book from Barnes & Noble: From Barnes & Noble Our Review Since rocketing to stardom with her 1993 debut "Pieces of You," Jewel has proved herself a gifted and sensitive singer-songwriter, poet, and actress. Chasing Down the Dawn, Jewel's follow-up to her bestselling book of poetry A Night Without Armor, details the childhood of a girl from Alaska who would become a pop superstar and reveals through stories, journal entries, poems, and sketches the endless creativity of an artistic mind. As multifaceted as its author is multitalented, Chasing Down the Dawn covers a lot of ground. It is organized loosely into chapters, some passages covering Jewel's early life. Jewel vividly describes growing up in the outdoors: riding horses and enjoying what nature had to offer in the breathtaking Alaskan landscape. A natural performer, Jewel also recounts her earliest gigs, traveling to remote villages in Alaska's northern interior to perform with her parents. Over the course of the narrative it becomes clear Jewel's parents were a constant source of support and encouragement for her creative aspirations. Interspersed between sections that deal with Jewel's upbringing, family, and friends are passages that touch on her current fame and status as a pop superstar. In journal entries, Jewel offers a glimpse into life on the road: waking up unsure of what city she is in, signing autographs, performing onstage, worrying about and treating voice problems, and soaking up every minute of downtime. In poems, Jewel examines the life she has chosen and reflects on her own identity, which seems a dual identity at times. Drawings that smack of curiosity and self-awareness touch upon themes both serious and lighthearted. Chasing Down the Dawn will strike a chord with younger fans anxious to hear more of this gifted artist's life story and her journey to fame. But it will also resonate with more mature readers as a chronicle of an artist's development and her pursuit of self-discovery. And Jewel's anecdotes about other celebrities she has met or performed with are sure to please everyone. I looked and looked for a show called Saturday Today, and couldn't find one, so I just kept it on CBS, and sure enough, she was on there. I taped her portion, and will put it up on my Webcam when I can. I was much more pleased with this morning than last night. That was a beautiful song, had a older sound to it, like something out of the sixties or seventies. I liked it, and she looked nice too. Those boots are cool, she's been wearing them a lot it seems, and they do look great on her. My cell phone starts ringing like crazy at about 920 to hear,"Amanda, turn on cbs, jewel is about to sing." so i jump up, and hit record. I didn't particullary care for the song, alhtough she did a beautiful job singing it as always. It was also new. Whoa 2 new songs in 10 hours. i really liked the one on letterman however. i found her little interview today kinda blunt. She seemed almost agervated with the guy who was interviewing her, and it was kinda funny. he asked her what she was listening to at this time, and she said she wasnt really listening to music, she has been doing more reading. then the guy looked at her, and says "well what ar eyou readin... come on work with me here Jewel!" she said umm biographys and just stuff. then when he asks what she hoped people would get from her book she said that isnt for me to decide thats up to the people, i cant decide that for them ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Oct 2000 11:16:32 -0400 From: Scott Evans Subject: [EDA] Saturday morning Seems like this Saturday morning show doesn't show everywhere..
