Her book, A Night Without Armor, sold more than 700,000 copies, a phenomenal number for a poetry collection. Now the singer/songwriter is back with a new book — prose this time — called Chasing Down the Dawn (HarperCollins, $24). Hitting bookstores this week, Dawn is a series of musings, anecdotes and little line drawings about growing up, becoming famous, and the people who have affected her life. Jewel Kilcher, 26, worked on it last year during her Spirit World Tour as she traveled from Rome to Knoxville, Tenn. Now, while starting to promote the book, she's doing a handful of acoustic shows until Nov. 18, when she winds up in Santa Rosa, Calif. Dawn is "very different," Jewel says, calling from Saratoga, Calif., while traveling to a hotel before yet another gig. "It was odd. It was the first time I hadn't written poetry. I had 1,000 pages. Weeding it down was a real chore. It's not a conventional story." Although she led somewhat of a vagabond life, growing up in Alaska and later living out of a Volkswagen van in San Diego while trying to support herself, she says, "Traveling is really hard for me. I tend to feel unsettled." One of her anchors is her mother, Nedra Carroll. Her parents divorced when she was 6; she and her two brothers went to live with her father, Atz. When Jewel was in her junior year of high school, her mother had a small heart attack. "For some reason, I felt no fear. . . . The moment of her heart attack was frightening; yet an enduring calm came over me. I knew that Nedra would not leave me," she writes. Her mother recovered and is still very much a part of her life. "My mom worked with me on the book a lot. She was part of my editing group." Her dad, she says, "is a pretty neat guy." Although she is writing songs "all the time," she says she hasn't decided on the direction of her next album. Her first two albums, Pieces of You and Spirit, have sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide. She is already thinking of her next book. "A slim book, maybe 20 poems, all really romantic, love poems. A little Valentine's book to give as a present." She could give it to her boyfriend, a cowboy named Ty Murray. Another phone rings. She chats quickly and ends the call with "I love you, baby." Was that Ty? "None of your business," she says, laughing. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 04:39:26 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: [EDA] Re: Review of Chasing Down The Dawn on USA Today web site I wrote: >Hi folks :-) > >While I haven't yet seen today's (Wednesday) print edition where there's >bound to be a print copy of this (with photo's?), there's an online review >of Jewel's new book on the USA Today web site at >http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/music316.htm I just read it after sending it....OK, so it's not really a review....more of an announcement ("hey, Jewel has a new book!"). No, its not that. It is just the fact that the people that paid to see her put on a performance deserve a good one. Also, she has always spoken out about alcohol and this would be inconsistent with her views. BUT she is a person and people change their opinions and attitudes all the time, and of course Jewel is allowed to also. I want to make sure that I don't spend the money to go up there to just be standing on the street with some security guard in my face saying I can't go in. Does anybody have any idea what this is going to be like? Am I going to be allowed in or do I have to have some special ticket or something? Is the Q&A for fans or for the media? Maybe MrBB can help answer some of these questions. Thanks a lot! - -Deirdre ________________________________________________ Deirdre C. Plus adrian is off the first cd, and that was how long ago? i dont remember dinner last nite.. oh well.. just my thoughts on this Jess angel with broken wings _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. This letter is intended to locate an EDA that I and other friends haven't heard from since 9/22. She is Luna Taylor, and many of you last saw her in NY at the beach clean-up weekend. She was online chatting with me that evening, the 22nd of September, at her parents house in Ft. Worth after returning from the east coast. She was heading back to Austin the next day to soon find a job and a place to stay. I have yet to hear from her since then. I have no idea if something's happened to her or not. I've contacted a couple other EDA friends of her's in the area and neither have heard from her either. So Luna, if you see this, let us know! Or, if anyone else has heard anything at all from her in the last week and a half, let me know please. I have no way of contacing anyone she's close to in order to find out. And they have no way of contacing me I don't believe. Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 16:14:16 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." The music is totally not like Jewel, it is punk, but they are an awesome band and it would be great if there was a big showing for them, because the winner is decided by the audience. I was hoping that going to this could be followed by a dinner gathering of EDAs or something along those lines. If you are interested, tickets are $7.
