Jewel was not drunk while performing at Puyallup. I went to Wazzu, and have an extensive background of dealing with and observing every variation of alcoholic effect, and that is not what Jewel was suffering from. It is my opinion that Jewel deals with some degree of manic-depression. Not bipolar, but some form none the less. For anyone else who deals with this, you know that during manic swings people can act distinctly different, even to the point of being mistaken as drunk. As far as Ty Murry is concerned, (in the words of Kevin Smith) they are so 'retarded for each other,' that he is the catalyst for her being so light hearted and uncharacteristically upbeat (for lack of a better term.) Perhaps this is the phenomena to which she refers in her poem Bukowsky's Widow : I want Paris I want you drunk on wine Okay, so that's probably literal, but possibly metaphorical. Either way, I think you get my point. Charles The sullen, pensive angel. And for the record, I have little to no problem with Jewel being drunk on principle, especially if she could do the quality of show that she performed at Puyallup in that condition. I know lots of artists that could, and have. Steve Poltz is an obvious one. :) It would be kinda sad though with that whole 'huge ships impossible to turn around' etc attitude that she has always expressed about drugs and alcohol. . The new movie called "Return to Me" with Minnie Driver and David Duchovney contains a song some of you may have heard of before. It's called Angel Standing By, by Jewel Kilcher. Has ANYONE seen this movie? I only know of ONE EDA who has, and she did post about this as well, only to receive ONE reply saying they hadn't heard of the movie. I'm a bit surprised too this has gone almost unnoticed till now. And, the song is in a key part of the movie as well. The "Wizard Of Oz - In Concert" producers happened to be driving together, listening to this particular NPR broadcast. That's what led to Jewel being cast as Dorothy that November for the Lincoln Center stage production. Maybe I'm wrong and your kidney's do have some connection, but I was always under the impression that your liver is what filters (or whatever) the alcohol and would give you problems. My friend had kidney problems, and it never was affected by her drinking. Anyways, I also wanted to say I agree with Cymbie, she beat me to saying it. People get drunk, Jewel's not superhuman, even though I don't believe she was drunk after what she's said about drinking before, it doesn't mean you should hold it against her. Look at all the other bands and groups you listen to and think of how many of them drink and/or do drugs, and it doesn't affect your position on liking them either. I get kind of sick of seeing people put Jewel on a pedestal and act like she's above-human form we should worship that never makes a mistake, or needs to be a regular person at times. She may be a great person - inspiring, talented etc. BUT she is just a regular person - a human being who needs to be treated like one. ~ Sandy - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." I have a diferent problem with each kidney, and the problem with the left one has me on medication that almost prevents me from drinking alcohol. (I can have a *little*, but never liked the stuff anyway) There is of course a strong possibility here that whatever medication she may be taking for her kidney ailment puts a clamp on her alcohol intake. I feel like I've bombarded the list today but I was just wondering if any Canadians (or I guess anyone outside of the states for that matter) were able to get Chasing Down the Dawn? I went to a few local bookstores, and none of them had it, and didn't expect it in anytime soon, even though 2 of them did tell me they had it on order. One of the stores said they don't expect it till Novemeber, so I was wondering if I was the only Canadian who ran into this problem :) I was also surprised by the price, I was told it will be $36 here, and usually there isin't that much of a difference between prices. Just to check, I pulled out ANWA and it was $11 American and $16 Canadian, I'm really surprised by the jump in price from that book to this one, and also by the jump from American to Canadian, even with conversions that's still really high comparitivly with other books. Welcome to the USA Michiel. :-) Things is different here than in Europe. For many various reasons it has basically been this way in the states for 4 years now. While I am not going to be naive and say it has *nothing* to do with at least some change in attitude (could partially be but I don't buy it), it certainly MORE has to do with the fact that now there are like 50 times as many fans trying to get at her before, during and after a show as there were in the old days when she played gigs at places that sat 300 to 500 (or MUCH less....such as what you dealt with in Europe last year.......small venues = more accessibility, at least to some degree at times. What you saw and experienced in Europe last year was pretty much how it was here in the states in 1994, 1995 & early 1996 before she got famous) Now, with her playing larger crowds in the USA, there's more looney-bin fans to deal with. Some of which of course have to be at least considered threatening and/or dangerous. I mean think about it. Think about the stuff that MUST be happening that we would never hear about in a million years. (unless she mentions some of this in her new book, which I hear is very revealing) Take this for instance. As manager of this list I see emails from non-subscribed addresses that never hit the list, as they always bounce to me for approval (it's an anti-spam device, which serves other purposes too). Many of these emails are indeed spam, but many of these are very sweet and written to Jewel by fans thinking jewel@smoe.org is Jewel's actual email address. However, some of them are from (for lack of a better word) lunatics and some have literally scared me over the years. Now these cases are the VERY FEW that I see in my meager position as an owner one of her fan-based mailing lists. Think of the sh*t that has to be going on that we don't see but her people undoubtedly do. It's situations like these that contribute to preventing an extremely popular and beautiful singer from being accessible to fans.
