I'm new to this list and this is actually the first time I've ever posted. However, I need your help. I live in Michigan and there is this place called "The Wired Frog" near to my home. It's a coffee shop type place. Well, my "band" got a paying gig there. I am mostly going to do my own stuff, but there are a few songs that I want to do that are by Jewel. I need to know if that's legal. So, if any of you guys know the exact laws on that, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know. Thanks a lot. Technically, I don't think its "legal". I'm on the tech team at my church (i run soundboard for the band, and the whole service). Some months ago, we had a meeting (tech, band, lighting crew) with our pastor and some issues came up. The band plays songs at church that are copywritten by artists already (they've played stuff by Jars of Clay, SonicFlood, amoung others), and hypothetically speaking, if that artist happen to be in our service one Sunday and heard the band playing their song.... they're be some legal infringements. But we still continue to play other people's songs. So what we do now (which probably won't work for you), when we use PowerPoint as the projector for the words to each song, on the title slide, we put the artists name, and copywrite info. But all ya really got to do, is just say "this is a jewel song...." or something to that effect. Because if you don't, and go right ahead playing the song, its almost like your taking claim. So, just verbally give Jewel credit, because you never know who's sitting in the audience. (I'm reminded of a story told by an EDA, wbout a girl in her school who won the talent show singing "Carnivore" and actually taking all the credit for the song. Even going as far as saying what Jewel says: "this is a song i just wrote. its called Carnivore... actually its 'Never Trust Your Pink Fleshy Heart To A Carnivore'... good solid advice my granny never gave me") cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, September 27, 2000 11:17 AM Subject: [EDA] The laws on playing Jewel's music. > Hello. Subject: [EDA] Playing "covers" I'm no expert in this field, but I would think it's fine to play other's songs live, so long as you're not doing it for profit (playing ONLY their songs), although I know there are a ton of cover bands out there as well. I really don't think it's illegal at all, since so many band's complete sets include only covers of other artist's songs. But if you were going to *record* someone's song, even doing your own version, THEN I'm sure you would have to get their permission, since it would be used on something for profit (in theory). Just my opinion. Derrick ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 14:02:43 PDT From: "sleepy guy" Subject: [EDA] Re: sleep/smoking Ok, it seems as though a few people took offense to my "smoking and coffee as a cure for sleepyness" joke. I even recieved a nastygram by email. Look, I WAS JUST KIDDING! We all know that smoking is terrible (in fact I just quit smoking today). We also all know that drinking coffee by the gallon is, at the very least, unhealthy. In addition to this, most reasonable people understand that going long periods of time without sleep can be dangerous. Think about driving, cooking, or any other part of our daily life that could become very risky if a person isn't alert enough for the task. I didn't intend to promote any of these self destructive behaviors with my last post, I WAS JUST MAKING A JOKE. I would like to sincerely apologize to anyone who may have taken offense, but I would also like to suggest that we all lighten up a little. I seriously doubt that anyone went out and started up smoking (or drinking whole pots of coffee) as a result of my post. I also think it's important to relax once in a while, and not take life too seriously. If we don't do this, the stress of daily life will eventually catch up to us and make us go totally batty. My intention in the last post was to make fun of my own miserable lifestyle, and thereby make it more bearable. I hope you all have a wonderful day. (and please get a little sleep on my behalf!) -phil Sleepy Angel _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. O'kay, I'm new to the list and I hate that the first post I send in is a neagtive one, but do you think that you could be kind enough to use the correct lyrics? It's "Let the phone ring, let's go back to sleep". Why do you keep adding in words and phrases when you try to quote her? It makes no sense. I also have to agree w/Sandy on the Ah thing. That is pretty annoying. Are you trying to write in a southern belle accent? Is that it? I can only guess, but a true southern belle would never write "like (used in the "valley girl" sense) or kewl".
