Yes, I've made mp3's of all of the songs I like on all of them so I can listen to them on the computer, but there's nothing like getting new tapes or cd's in the mail, or buying a cd in the store and unwrapping it.. It's just never as exciting listening to it on mp3 and sitting there on the computer.. Sure, the Internet is much more convienient, but, damn it...it's not as fun!! Sorry for going on such a mission here, but this has been bugging me for a while. Thanks for listening everyone. Spirit might have done better with a different first single..' I mena, I know it's not healthy pondering on the past, but think about it.. If Spirit had started out with a bang, with Down So Long or the Jupiter remix, and then the catchy, but slower Hands second, would it have done better.. Radio didn't give Down So Long a chance at all because...I don't know, maybe a Jewel burnout? But it's a great and catchy song, and as a first single, it would've done great.. I guess maybe all this thinking was just disappointment that a record as great as Spirit didn't do better.. I guess if her fourth album is a hit, it would boost all the people who just kind of passed over Spirit.. Oh well.. =) Scott Evans -- scott@tanweb.com Planet Jewel -- http://jewel.tanweb.com my page -- http://tanweb.com/scott Little fish, big fish swimming in the water Come back here man, give me my daughter -- PJ Harvey ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 02 Sep 2000 22:58:39 -0400 From: Scott Evans Subject: * spirit i'm listening to spirit for the first time in a while.. i don't see why jewel fans hate it so much.. it very good, and much more consistent than pieces of you.. pieces of you had some great songs, like painters and amen, but the versions were far from the best jewel has performed them.. i think jewel's always been unconsistent.. there'll be times where i'll love her and she'll be spot-on, and some other times when i thought 'jewel! what are you doing?!'... but anyway, i think spirit is great, and not at all overproduced.. EVERYTHING is overproduced compared to pieces of you.. it's not even fair comparing a 5 year span of work against each other.. just as it's not fair to judge jewel on spirit, which some people do.. it's two years old.. the new stuff she's pumping out is much different.. i also like her much better live than during spirit.. she seemed uncomfortable or something during the tour, from the recordings i heard.. very awkward, just something i felt.. and she was great during austin city limits, so hopefully it's a sign for the good.. oh well, i'm bored, so i just felt like babbling.. I know that I would much rather have a first generation digital copy than a sixth generation audio tape. I think the reason this isn't done more on this list is because Jewel gave the EDAs permission to trade tapes, but not necessarily CDs and mp3s. Although, to be honest, I really don't see what difference it makes how Jewel's music is shared. And I agree that it makes a whole lot of sense to share mp3s rather than tapes. It's much more efficient to fill in the gaps in an Angelfood collection with mp3s, as opposed to sending away a tape with return postage and waiting two or three weeks to get one song. It seems kind of silly to have as powerful a tool as the internet at our disposal and insist on trading via an outdated practice. (The ethereal songbird has a thing for cowboys because her dad was one.) There are already a lot of Jewel songs converted into mp3, you just have to know where to look for them We could at *least* upgrade to having a "cd trade tree", or something, because the quality doesn't change too much between burned cd's, and anyone who can't afford to have that many mp3's on their computer (I know someone mentioned this, don't remember who) can ask someone to burn them a cd, or if they have a cd burner, do it themselves. I, myself, hate to listen to tapes now anyways. I have a tape player on my cd player, but why would much rather have a cd, especially since I have only a cd player in the car. The quality is better, and it's much MUCH easier to go from song to song, back and forth, and play what you want to listen to, without rewinding or fast forwarding, which just wears down the tape anyways, and the more you listen to the tape, the more it wears it down.
