The four/five major musicians at the Fritz Creek Store/Bearsville Sessions were Marc Schulman - guitar - (been in Suzanne Vega's touring band a lot) Gerry Marotta - drums - (spent a fair amount of time touring with Peter Gabriel) T-Bone Wolk - bass - (been with Hall & Oates since the 70s) Michale (last name never revealed) - other percussion (piano?) - all that was mentioned about him is that he was from Sweden. Flea - Red Hot Chili Peppers (Flea appeared on just a few songs recorded at the sessions, and was also on the radio-play version of "You Were Meant For Me") There may have been some other bit players at the sessions, but I do not recall any of them being mentioned on the list before. Gerry, Marc and T-Bone were the musicians who performed with Jewel in Bearsville at JewelStock. But I agree with most of you, that she should put it out as something for the impacient fans out there. And to be honest with you i don't really want jewel to do anyother movie. I'm not that big of a movie fan so. I think that she should a double album One cd with folk songs like break me violet eyes stephenville other some old songs to, and also do a more of a rock cd with the newest rock vibe to it, DOwn Grey matter, LMJLMA ENSBS ect... welp that's just my take on things have a good day hope it's not raining like it is here w.h] the music lovin' angel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 13:43:46 -0400 From: "Seth D. I know a song titled "Carnivore" from a while ago by Jewel that has a longer title of "Don't trust your pink fleshy heart to a Carnivore". Is there a newer song out there that's also called Carnivore by her? or is this just a different name for another song I'm unaware of. Carnivore(the one I'm familiar with) is like one of my favorites by her right now because of my life situation. Now that I think of it... wouldn't it be kinda cool, say 5 years from now, these recordings are released (amoung w/ other canned recordings... didn't she record Raven for Spirit?) as the "lost recordings". I know other artists have done stuff like that. I have a Lynard Skynard album, that was recently released I believe, and its a bunch of old recordings, most of which have never been heard. (Early versions of songs... etc.) And when 2Pac died... he had enough recorded material to release several more albums.... so they released those recordings. I know I'm repeating myself from yesterday, but I hope one day Jewel and Atlantic will realize that its a shame to put these tracks to waste. cymbie tree hugger - -- when night falls it's dawn one must reach for. - -a. camus ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 10:08:20 -0700 (PDT) From: kevin maguire Subject: * Jewel in Sports Illustrated It was pretty funny, in the August 28th issue of SI. I was in the back seat of a friends car, and we were coming home from camping, and my buddy Conor was next to me. As i was flipping thru the pages, there was a couple pages about tennis, then a picture of Britney Spears & dancers proable preforming for the tennis players, etc. Well Conor Loves britney, ok he just LUST for her, and so he was checking her out, etc. then when i got the mag. back, i continue to read and to my suprise i found Jewel in there!! i was so stoked!! here's what the article said: "....Ty Murray has plenty of rodeo gold belts to go around his waist, but he had a rare JEWEL on his arm at his induction into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. At a reception afterward the Alaskan chanteuse entertained Murray and guest with songs, yodeling and joke telling. The two have been together since last year...." this was in the BEAT section on page 64, and has a great picture of them, and out of the 11 big celb. it talks about they are the only ones pictured, OVER Michael Jordan, Andre Agassi, Sammy Sosa, Dan Marino...etc So i thought that was Pretty AWESOME!!!! peace out!!! They are called the JewelStock tapes. Those of us that have been fortunate enough to see Jewel perform live, and those of us that have been REALLY fortunate enough to see her in a smaller/intimate venue know very well her major strength is a live performance. As good as her studio stuff can be, high quality recordings of her live stuff are much better for the most part IMO. Having said that, with a few notable exceptions (Carnivore, Satellite, Fading Away, Love Me Just Leave Me Alone a few more)), the JewelStock tapes have almost all of the songs that Jewel was recording at the Bearsville Sessions.....and even so, while not nearly as powerful as the JewelStock performances that are not included on the JewelStock tapes, other acoustic live performances of Carnivore and Satellite DO appear on the JewelStock tapes as part of the WDST Backyard Barbecue we used as filler on the 3 tape set. I have been fortunate enough to have heard bits and pieces of some of the actual Bearsville Studios recording sessions, and to be honest, they just don't seem to have the same pizazz, spark and jolt that the live JewelStock tapes do....not even close actually. Of course these were just raw and unpolished recordings, but so are the Jewelstock tapes. Because they are just that.....raw, unpolished, unedited etc, personally I just don't see them releasing the Bearsville Studios material because of all the post-production work it would take (I could of course be quite wrong here). However, I could however see them someday releasing a live CD (or perhaps double live CD) of various material, not necessarily the JewelStock recordings (probably NOT JewelStock), as they have tons MORE high quality live material performed & recorded SINCE JewelStock. It was post-JewelStock they really began to take notice and make sure they got high quality recordings of all her performances. Up until then it was quite often hit and miss depending upon what the venue had for recording equipment. While I would still love to see a release (limited or not) of either the Bearsville Sessions or even JewelStock (for the "I was there!" thrill of it), I think any future live release will be of other material. Perhaps shows already performed, perhaps shows yet to be performed. Mike :-) P.S. For those that do not know and may be wondering, the material recorded in July 1996 by Jewel in Bearsville NY (commonly known as the Bearsville Sessions) was to have been released on an album tentatively called Fritz Creek Store. For many various reasons that material was not released and over two years later she recorded Spirit. While recording in Bearsville (literally one mile from Woodstock NY, hence the JewelStock name), Jewel gave two live performances in a quite intimate balconied 330 seat theatre. One was 100% for the members of this list, the second was for the community, although one-third of the crowd was list members. A three tape set of the two performances was treed on this list that fall with all of the songs performed, with the exception of the same five songs she performed each night with the band. The track list for the three tapes is below. I suggest to those of you who do not have these tapes that you try to get yourself a set from fellow list members. It's well worth it.
