I won't be voting for Gore under any circumstances, and Jewel's support of him will not encourage me to go out and vote for him either. My personal feeling on all artists, regardless of medium, is that I simply enjoy what talents or gifts they offer publically, and don't pay much attention to everything else. Of course I'm interested in finding some personal things out, but I don't support Jewel's views or her political persuasion. I simply enjoy her music, I enjoy sometimes knowing more about her to better understand her music, but I couldn't care less who Jewel choses to support politically or whether or not she votes. I do agree that hopefully more people will become involved in the political process, and celebrities' participating *does* encourage voters to actually get out and vote. For example, there was some controversy over The Rock appearing at the Republican Convention this year. My feeling was it could only be a good thing -- perhaps his fans will be encouraged to vote. Hopefully, though, voters will be encouraged to educate themselves, too. I'm just reiterating the need for younger voters to actually go out and get to know the issues, the ideologies, the positions, the histories, etc and then choose which best applies to them personally -- not just which one seems to appeal to favorite celebrities. It's interesting to see who or what everyone supports, but it in no way influences me to vote a certain way. Regardless of what position one takes, it should be from the heart. If the decision to become more educated is inspired by a celebrity, that's awesome. But the decision shouldn't be based on a celebrity's personal choices. I wouldn't necessarily see Jewel as a political puppet -- we shouldn't judge her personal choices the same way we often judge her music and public personality. Obviously, appearing at public, national events for a particular candidate will implicate Jewel (and anyone else) as agreeing/supporting said candidate. But before we're Republicans, Independents, Reformers, Greens, or Democrats, we're people making such decisions based on -- hopefully -- personal convictions and beliefs. Jewel shouldn't be excluded from that right just because she's famous. And this is coming from someone who, if Jewel does indeed support Gore, COMPLETELY disagrees politically and ideologically. Have a great one Megan (An EDA who will not be voting for Al Gore!!) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2000 15:01:32 GMT From: "Amy Emerman" Subject: * NJC: Steve Poltz concert at Bottom Line Well, it wasn't just STeve, but he was one of four singer/songwriters to share the stage and sing songs/discuss the songwriting process. It was called "In Their Own WOrds". Very interesting show. I went to both shows (one at 7 and one at 10). Steve was wonderful--very funny, very sweet. He added a whole element to the show that loosened up the other singer/songwriters who were there. It really turned out to be excellent. I hadn't listened to much of Steve's stuff before, but I was very impressed by his sweetness, charm, sincerity, humor, generosity, and talent! I like him a lot. Hope some others of you got to catch the show. I'm a newly inspired Steve fan. AMY :-) List Moderator Note: newer subscribers to this list may not realize this, but Steve Poltz is an integral part of Jewel music, both creatively and in performance. He took Jewel under his wing when she was just starting, has co-written many of her songs (including You Were Meant For Me) and has toured with her as an opening act (solo and with his former band, The Rugburns) and a member of Jewel's band on the recent Spirit tour. Posts about Steve, while in most cases are NJC (No Jewel Content), from this point on will be allowed, as long as they are about his music and/or his professional relationship with Jewel, and as long as it does not get out of hand. - Mike ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V5 #257 ***************************
