I know she's read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" and Plato's "The Symposium". I was wondering what other titles she has read that may have shaped how she sees the world. Jason >> Hi, One thing we do quite a bit on the J-Team, is turn each other on to books and music and I'll pass this idea on to Lenedra and see what books she and Jewel may enjoy recommending to you. As it develops, maybe we can add something like this to JeweLink from time to time. You can always find recommended music from us at Jewel's website on the "guest artist" page. There's several great highly recommended artists there now and we'll be adding more every month or so. (We have some truly great features lined up and we'll be unveiling our next guest artist very soon!) I like your "recommended reading" idea. I'll see what we can do for you on that. MrBB PS. In case you're curious what I'm reading and listening to: Reading: "No More Sad Refrains - The Life & Times Of Sandy Denny" by Clinton Heylin Now playing: "Pirates" by Rickie Lee Jones ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 14:13:52 -0700 From: "The wise and powerful Chuckman" Subject: * Re: Last Dance Rodeo WARNING: I have a propensity towards circumlocution, so if you're not really interested, you might want to save yourself the time and delete this. Sorry. THE SETUP: Imagine a man and a woman who are basically best friends. The man is hopelessly in love with the woman, but she thinks they're too good of friends to date, and is looking for some dream man, that in all likelihood doesn't really exist. So, her friend is the one she always talks to about looking for men, and all the things close friends talk about: hopes, dreams, passions, etc. It torchers him constantly to be so close, and love her so much. However, he loves her too much to leave, or ever lose hope that she will eventually love him. The cost of this is that he has all this love that he feels obligated not to express to her because he knows she does not want to hear it, it only hurts her. During the sleepless nights he retreats to bars and alcohol to numb the pain. ENTER SONG: >*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ >LAST DANCE RODEO > >Your lungs fill up with concrete, her voice is all you can hear >Red lips and a screwdriver wrapped around some mink-clad smear >And you know that she's a diamond in this damn juke-box hell >'Cause fool's gold only fools fools in two-bit hotels >But she's cooler than all that, she's a real high-class cat >She's queen of the last dance rodeo (He has a sinking feeling in his chest as he hears a woman's voice. Through blurred eyes he can tell little but that she is a woman In his drunken state she seems really beautiful, like she doesn't belong here in one of these generic, smokey, stinking, juke-box laden, two-bit hotel bars he frequents when he wants to drown his sorrows. She almost really doesn't belong, she could so easily be more. But what she is, is the best at what she does (prostitute) because she knows how to find men who are venerable.) [NOTE: Last=final, DANCE=sex, RODEO=chance, ruffly. Imagine if you will someone saying, I just need this one last piece of chocolate before I REALLY start my diet. And the queen thereof, becomes someone proficient at exploiting men looking for the one last piece syndrome.] >But under the gas lamp the air is thick and velveteen >Your bones fill with hunger, your heart fills with longing >You're no longer human, you're an insatiable ho >You wanna bury your face forever in the navel of her soul >'Cause you know all you need is a heart to call home >All you need is a heart to call home >That's all (She helps him outside, and props him against the gas lamp to help him stand. The heat, smell, and gas from the lamp poor over them from above. That real high class cat reminds him of his love enough to make lust uncontrollably consume him, and make him want to use her for what he can not have with his friend. He knows it's not her, but all he needs is a warm body, and skin to bury his face in. And a heart to call home for a little while to get him past this emotion that's just too much, one last time.) > >Lightbulbs and nylons and plastic chandeliers >Objects are only objects, they can't feel when you're near >And tangerine lips and lily-white breasts >These things they are eternal, inside them humanity rests >Her skin is like a seashell and you listen to her soul >Like an old-time radio show (After the sex he finds himself looking at things laying around the cheep hotel room. His eyes skip from object to object about the room. Still laying on top of her, he slowly kisses and traces her body as he inspects it. He rests his head on her soft white skinned chest and thinks. His fingers caressing her nipples as though to turn the dials of the old time radio he's pressing his ear to, listening to and feeling the eternal humanity of her beating heart and physical beauty.) > >But under the gas lamp the air is thick and velveteen >Your bones fill with hunger, your heart fills with longing >You're no longer human, you're an insatiable ho >You wanna bury your face forever in the navel of her soul >'Cause you know all you need is a heart to call home >All you need is a heart to call home >That's all (Some night later, with a different woman, and different scenario, he still finds himself doing the same thing. 'One last time.') > >But don't wander too far, my one constant star >Darkness exists except where you are >My feet are filled with wandering, they follow your own >'Cause everywhere you are feels like home [NOTE: Tone change to signify different perspective/person singing, the female friend.] (When he is not around, she realizes how much he means to her. The one constant and caring person in her life who can she can always count on to be there. When he's not there she is sad. Although she always tries out other men, she always comes back to him, because he feels right and means so much to her.) > >So search all you miners, you hunters of dreams >Look in the alleyways, for what you know is not what it seems >And feign all you maidens, but don't resist too long >Least you look behind you and see your own shadow is gone >Don't you know it's the last rodeo, you gotta find yourself a cowboy >Or someone to keep you warm when it snows [NOTE: Tone returns to narrator.] (She just keep looking for perfection that isn't real. He keep going to the alleyways, searching for something that only occurs as real for a moment, but never is, and can't take it's place. Search for what you made up girls, but don't resist his love too long. Because eventually you will look for the friend, and he wont be there to be in love with you any more. Can't you tell, it's the LAST CHANCE (notice how it becomes last chance for love, as opposed to DANCE=sex) for you to be love by him before he is driven away and gives up. You should love each other, even if it is not what you dream of, appreciate it for what how much it is. >'Cause under the gas lamp the air is thick and velveteen >Your bones fill with hunger, your heart fills with longing >You're no longer human, you're an insatiable ho >You wanna bury your face forever in the navel of her soul >'Cause you know all you need is a heart... >All you need is a heart to call home >That's all (Until she discovers how much she really loves him, we find the man exiled back into the alleyway, seeking the only form of momentary relief he can find.) I know this doesn't sound exactly like the typical Jewel song interpretation, but I'd like to reference that on Jewel Unplugged she said something to the effect of 'I thought it was the dumbest song ever.' Anyway, that's my take on it. Lemme know what you think. Thanks for reading the whole thing, I'm impressed. Charles. Sadly, the angel that was working on the website for the project has fallen very ill, and asked to withdraw her help in creating it, doctor's orders. (I would really appreciate if you all keep her in your thoughts and hope with me that she feels better.) I'm still hoping we can continue with the whole project. I received several responses from this list-for which I am very thankful-and things are still moving forward (with a frustratingly nebulous sort of slowness)with contacting Jewel & her management. I was thinking that perhaps one of you who is always asking for help or suggestions with direction or 'cool stuff' for your websites might be interested in contacting me to discuss what Jewel's Fools is doing. It would be an awesome website, if we could get it up. Also, those interested in the Yearbook idea that kept circulating (although one apparently already exists at Gerrit's webpage) this would be something similar, hopefully with more multimedia. Anyway, if you are at all interested, or need more info, please feel free to write me back. Thanks all. Charles. The sullen, pensive angel. Oh, a non-list member friend of mine asked me to cut n' paste this too. Hi angels! Watching Northern Exposure today and I to my chagrin discovered in this particular episode there was an elderly indian patient with the name Nedra, isnt that wonderful, and quite likely inspired by our favorite mom! from the exiled angel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 11:09:27 -0700 From: "Mike" Subject: * FWD: JeweLink July 21, 2000 Here is the latest issue of JeweLink, directly from Jewel's "people", if you want to get a copy of this directly as each issue comes out, you can sub- scribe to it by sending a blank email to join-jewelink@list.jeweljk.com ******************************************** JeweLink - The Official Jewel Communications List ******************************************** Hi all, We hope everyone received the JeweLink NewsFlash we sent you a few days ago.
