It's not that easy. I think it's impossible to avoid fighting. We can try and keep it to a minimum, but as long as people are allowed to continue to discuss things at their own discretion, and they state an opinion, there is going to be someone with the opposite opinion who feels the need to defend their own, or Jewel's honour. The only way to stop this is to stop discussing Jewel, and then there wouldn't be a point for the list :) ~<3~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 02:57:30 EDT From: Twinkletoes131@cs.com Subject: * Re: how I found Jewel and how she inspires Hey, angels :) Well I enjoyed reading Kerri's post so much, I thought I would try one of my own. It's about two o'clock in the morning, so I'm not sure how great it will be, but it's the only time I really have to get on the internet. Anyway, getting to the point :) I found Jewel at a time in my life that I consider one of my darkest periods. I was in middle school, and was having a lot of trouble fitting in with the separate groups and cliques that surrounded me. I had a good number of friends, but I felt like no one fully understood me. To make things worse, my step-dad was verbally abusive and turned our once loving home into a war zone for a time. That's when Jewel (unknowingly) stepped in. I bought her c/d on a whim one day and took it home and played it that night. Through her words, I found understanding. Through the music itself, I found comfort. When things were bad, I would put "Amen" on repeat and cry myself to sleep. I will be a senior in high school this fall, and things have never been better. I am involved in an array of various activites, including dancing (jazz, tap, ballet), being an editor of the school paper, and volunteering. But, mostly, I've been writing. I've never forgotten the gift Jewel gave to me, and I do my best to give as well. I got over the ego thing, and suddenly my "anonymous" poems and stories found their ways into people's lockers and coat pockets. It didn't matter if they were wondeful or not. It mattered that I cared. When I heard some of the people I had given them to saying how simple words had made things seem brighter, it all hit home. That's what it's about. Being an EDA. Being a human being, more importantly. Just taking what others offer gratefully and giving what you can give in return. Kindness does not discriminate. I know Jewel has touched so many lives doing what she does best. That's a beautiful thing and is what has brought us all to this list. Continuing her footsteps, we will create a difference in our lives and the lives of countless others. I love you guys ;) ~an angel~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 22:43:51 -0700 (PDT) From: "Joe P. Jewel is referenced twice below , and two other up-and-coming list favorites are discussed -- Tara MacLean , and Cowboy Junkies ... --Joe -- Two (2) Articles Below -- Sonicnet/Yahoo , 7/10/00 : Girls Room Tour Aims To Fill Lilith Void Contributing Editor Mark Woodlief reports Four female singer/songwriters will attempt to fill the void left by Lilith Fair's absence this summer with a tour of their own. The Girls Room tour —- featuring Kendall Payne, Tara MacLean, Amy Correia and Shannon McNally —- will hit clubs around the country on a month long tour beginning Monday. The idea for the trek came to Capitol Records' A&R Director Perry Watts-Russell during one of the dates of last year's final Lilith tour. "Perry and I were hanging out at Lilith and overheard this girl saying, 'What are we going to do next year without all these women touring?' " said Payne, who performed on the all-female Lilith tour last year. "Perry wanted to tell her there were these great female songwriters he could put on tour." At each stop on the Girls Room tour, local female acoustic artists will compete for a chance to open the show. The openers then will have a chance to be chosen as the closer at the tour's Aug. 8 finale at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles. The winner also will record a demo at Capitol's studios. Payne said she especially appreciated that the tour would be lending a hand to aspiring songwriters, since "that's what's happened to all of us." Tour sponsor Stayfree and Capitol Records also will donate $1,000 to a women's charity in each city the tour visits. "These are all very sweet women, and I really am looking forward to being on the road," Payne said. "Amy [Correia] and I bonded right off the bat. She's a quirky, wonderful songwriter and very true to her art." Correia will release her debut, Carnival Love, in September. Payne released her debut, Jordan's Sister, last year. The album's "Supermodels" (RealAudio excerpt) was chosen as the theme song for the WB television series "Popular." MacLean played the Lilith Fair each of its three years, the only other artist besides founder and fellow Canadian Sarah McLachlan to do so. MacLean's major-label debut, Passenger, was released Feb. 29. Philadelphia newcomer McNally was discovered by Margo Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies, according to a spokesperson at Capitol. McNally's debut is due in the fall. Girls Room tour dates: July 10; Seattle, Wash.; Century Ballroom July 11; Portland, Ore.; Aladdin Theatre July 13; San Francisco, Calif.; Slim's July 14; San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; Coach House July 15; San Diego, Calif.; Cane's July 17; Salt Lake City, Utah; Zephyr Club July 18; Denver, Colo.; Bluebird Theater July 20; St. Louis, Mo.; Side Door July 21; Chicago, Ill.; Double Door July 22; Minneapolis, Minn.; Fine Line Music Cafe July 24; Pontiac, Mich.; 7th House July 25; Toronto, Ontario; Phoenix Concert Theatre July 27; Boston, Mass.; Karma Lounge July 28; New York, N.Y.; Bowery Ballroom July 30; Nashville, Tenn.; 3rd & Lindsley July 31; Atlanta, Ga.; Cotton Club Aug. 2; Houston, Texas; Instant Karma Aug. 3; Austin, Texas; La Zona Rosa Aug. 4; Dallas, Texas; Gypsy Tea Room Aug. 7; Las Vegas, Nev.; Crossroads at House of Blues Aug. 8; West Hollywood, Calif.; Roxy Theater http://rock.yahoo.com/rock/music_news/sonicnet/story.html?s=n/sonicnet/rock/ news/20000710/20000710006 Reuters/Yahoo 7/12/00 : Female rockers hit the road By Dean Goodman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - With recording artists like Eminem, Creed and Kid Rock ruling the charts, it's been a while since anyone bandied about ``the year of the woman´´ tag. It seems like a generation ago that singer-songwriters such as Alanis Morissette, Jewel and Sarah McLachlan led the latest estrogen revolution. With these artists between albums at the moment, there are plenty of up-and-coming female acts ready to fill the vacuum. Four of them happen to be on Capitol Records, which has put together a ``Girls Room´´ package that began a monthlong tour in Seattle on Monday. Tara MacLean, Kendall Payne, Amy Correia and Shannon McNally will each play sets of about 30 minutes during a series of free shows in 22 cities. If it sounds like a pocket version of the men-free Lilith Fair, that's the basic idea, says Capitol A&R executive Perry Watts-Russell. He came up with the concept last year when attending some Lilith shows where Payne was performing. He overheard fans bemoaning Lilith organizer McLachlan's decision to end the festival's three-year run. ``It made me think that Sarah McLachlan had actually created something that, not only was it successful, but it was also going to leave a void for some people. It appeared to me it was an experience that hadn´t worn out its welcome,´´ Watts-Russell told Reuters. The tour is sponsored by Stayfree, but MacLean promises, ''We're not going to have a big maxi-pad hanging over us or anything like that.'' Of the four, MacLean, 26, is perhaps the most experienced. Capitol released the Canadian native's major-label debut, ''Passenger,'' in the United States in February, and she's been on the road since October. Payne, a 20-year-old Los Angeles native whose debut album, ''Jordan's Sister,'' came out a year ago, is best known for her acerbic ``Supermodel´´ theme song for the WB television series ´´Popular.´´ Lakeville, Mass., native Correia, 31, will release her eclectic debut, ``Carnival Love,´´ on Sept. 23. McNally, a 27-year-old blues-rocker originally from New York´s Long Island, will reach stores early next year with her debut, ``Jukebox Sparrows.´´ Both Correia and McNally are selling EPs on the road. No one expects the ``Girls Room´´ exposure to propel the artists into Morissette sales territory. According to Watts-Russell, it´s ``old-fashioned artist development,´´ which is a drawn-out and costly process. Payne already is learning that the hard way. With the ''Popular'' exposure and plenty of good reviews, everyone expected her first album to be huge. But radio ignored her upbeat confessional tunes, and the album failed to dent the top 200 charts. In the aftermath, admitted to ``a lot of surrendering hope and seeing what´s left after the building has burned.´´ Her conclusion? ``I can´t do anything else, it´s like fire in my bones. I´m gonna do this till I die.´´ Watts-Russell said alternative music radio stations are not playing as many female artists as they used to. ``It´s not perceived as the happening thing. I have to ignore that.´´ MacLean, on the other hand, had more modest expectations for ``Passenger,´´ which recalls the folky pop of Jewel. She sells a lot of copies off stage each night, and sales have surpassed the 40,000-unit mark set by her 1997 Canadian-only release ``Silence.´´ ``I don´t play with the idea of mainstream,´´ MacLean said. ´´I find that to be a very surface vision of music.´´ the ``Girls Room´´ tour ... http://www.thegirlsroom.com Reuters/Variety http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20000712/en/music-girls_1.html ===== folk_rock@yahoo.com My Home Page --Currently on KOSOVO , etc. : http://www.geocities.com/joeshenk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 09:45:46 EDT From: "Devin Starr" Subject: * Re: my jewel theme, question about jessica As i write this i am listenign to Jessica for the first time (i just got it on mp3 swich disc..yay!) but i have been reading hte lyrics for a year. I get so sick of these senseless arguments - a post that stops the argument and says something about what the edas are really about is always so refreshing! I especially loved that story about the girl and her granny listening to POY together, it was so lovely - i wish i could've been there to see it. But i realised, i've been on this list for ummm *counts fingers* 9 months now - it seems like much longer, but i've never told you guys what you mean to me, or why i joined the list. I mean perhaps i joined the list for the wrong reasons. I loved Jewel's music - there was a fan list - i joined. That's pretty much it. But since i've been on it, i've been so inspired and so in awe of some of the edas - not because of the amount of Jewel memorabilia that they have, but because of the person they are. The selflessness they have, and their willingness and want to help others. It's amazing! And it inspires me to go out and do the same for others. I've never met a group of people who are so damn fabulous! I mean, there's always one or two people in any list who are really great... but the EDAs have hundreds of these people, not just one or two. That's what really makes me love this list, the people. Not the source of Jewel info it gives me ( i mean that's great too, but far less important). I've made some great friends from this list, one's that i'll never forget. And even though i've never talked or emailed most of you personally, i feel like i know lot's of you :) I just really wanted to say 'THANK YOU!!' to everyone, for inspiring me, for answering my questions, for being so nice when it comes to angelfood. But anyway, I don't think that there is a way that we could all just stop fighting. We're human and when there are something like 3000 people in a group, different opinions will and do come up, and things happen. But, we should be able to avoid saying things that will cause a fellow angel to feel like s/he can't express her opinion. There's of course no problem with saying "Well, I don't agree with what you think, no, but, what I think is....." in a way that doesn't feel to him or her like s/he's being insulted. I've never felt that way towards this list. I joined in August of 98, (under a different address) but I've been a fan for... something like 5 years. At least. But since I've been on the list, I've made a load of friends, one of which has saved my life (a few times.) The definition to me of angels on this list is a huge group of us that are into the idea of helping others, and are united by Jewel's music. When I joined, I posted all the time about every subject, and I never felt that I had to watch what I was saying, nor was I ever flamed. (On the eda-thoughts list I've been flamed more than a few times, but that's different in the respect that I expected him to say something and didn't care.) I don't actually have a good ending for this, so I'll just leave it at the thought that no angel or anyone else should feel afraid to say something, just as long as it's not for the purpose of hurting someone else.
