Hey angels, I just wanted to write something in regard to the whole issue as to whether or not Jewel is stealing other poets' words. I'm a saxophone player and an avid jazz player and listener. In jazz one is always told that quoting another artist's lick is hip. It shows class and knowledge into the world of jazz. One hopefully doesn't quote an artist's entire solo, but playing certain licks is very appropriate. One incorporates this lick into their own sound and ideas. This is exactly what Jewel is doing with other poets' words. She isn't singing their exact words and claiming them to be hers. She is just reiterating the gist of what they have to say and transferring it into her own style of music and poetry. It's cool, don't worry. :) - -Deirdre P.S. If somebody needs to email me back please use the address . Hi, There is a little thing in Literature called an Allusion. Like the phrase many people use of "my cup overfloweth" which is an allusion to the bible. An allusion is defined as a reference to a literary piece or historic event. Like the little line "You can be Henry Miller and I'll be Anias Ninn." is another type of Allusion. Anyway love lots. ~Pshyco Angel~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2000 23:48:13 EDT From: jewelchute@aol.com Subject: * BSB and Jewel it's possible that this was already mentioned because I know that this TRL was a repeat, but did anyone see that one with the Backstreet boys where carson is asking them how much they know about each other and A.J (the artsy-looking one) said that th eone person he would love to do a duet with is our very own jewel!! i thought that was so cool...so the (rumored) jewel duet list is now : marilyn manson, moby and now AJ...YAY! anyway..thought that was cool. sorry if this info was already posted :) - -lindsey ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 00:32:03 EDT From: "Thomas Miles" Subject: * NJC: Bearsville 2000: Angel Needs A Ride Update Here is the latest update for Angel Needs A Ride (ANAR) to Bearsville 2000. Maybe it was a bad choice of words. It was not a cruel comment, I just thought it was interewsting to come across. I never thought I would recieve so much hate mail by that comment. I didn't mean it as in insult, but rather just a glimse into her writing and what inspires her. I am sorry for offending so amny people on the list, but it was taken way out of context. Elliot..."An immature poet tries to immitate, and the mature poet will steal" or something to that effect. then later, people got up in arms saying that jewel wasnt a thief.. blah blah blah... i agree that she is not a thief, but i think that the person was not insinuating that Jewel was stealing. Personally, in my view, if someone were to use a line of a poem, song or something of mine, i would take it as a compliment, it means that the person saw a beauty, or appropriateness of the line and wanted to share it with others. if someone were to do that with a line (not a whole poem or anything... thats too much.. too far) i would feel honoured. im pretty sure most writers would Jess angel with broken wings ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 17:10:27 EDT From: Poet2811@aol.com Subject: * OK guys... Angels- You all took what I said wrong. I just thought that what T.S. Elliot said was rather funny and appropriate to the situation. I don't think what Jewel did is wrong or stealing or any such thing. In fact, I use many of same concepts as other writers do. For example calling poetry The Poem, like Bukowski does, or refering to it as The Word. I'm not here to judge what she does. I was just throwing out that line to let you all chew over it and decide for yourself. If you think about it, there is humor in that. "A mature poet immitates, a mature poet steals," Baiscly saying that someone who is an "immature poet" tries in vain to model their poetry after another writer. But a mature poet, on the other hand, takes things that other writers say and mold it into their own as well. It's like drinking out of the same cup. Some people drink out of the same straw and some people prefer to use the another. Which one is more "correct" Who knows? Thats one of those things you have to decide for yourselves. Hmmm...where did I go with that...I dunno... Anyway, to barrow a line from a friend of mine, "Have a kicking day and poke someone in the eye for being mean to a butterfly for me" Later angels Rachel *the only slightly lonely poetic angel* ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jun 2000 17:14:11 EDT From: Poet2811@aol.com Subject: * Re: Jewel Stealing Lines Guys- I think this topic was brought up a few weeks ago (honestly I haven't had a lot of time and deleted all the posts) and I would just like to say that maybe the recivers of "hate mail" shouldn't be so sensitive about it...It's e-mail. Just my two cents (I can't manage to keep them out!) but this whole discussion about Jewel quoting other poets etc. had nothing to do with her using allusion, so why does that make her legal and correct? That just confused me. Anyways, I agree! There's nothing wrong with using someone else's words, chances are they just found them somewhere else too! Everyone puts words and thoughts into their writing that have been inspired by something they saw written somewhere else! They just do it with their own style, and I also agree it is a great honor to have someone want to "steal" your words :) ~<3~ Sandy ~ Angeloflove@innocent.com ~ Angelicpoet@home.com Check out my new Jewel page!!! http://www.geocities.com/angelofluv.geo/index2.html - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, June 21, 2000 9:53 PM Subject: * What jewel does is legal and correct!! > Hi, > There is a little thing in Literature called an Allusion.
