Hey Jordana(and any others who might be wondering), Although I've heard Pink Floyd sang a song by that title, the song you probably thought was sung by Jewel entitled "Wish you were here" was/is sung by a band known as the "Rednex". I found a CD once as well as others have told me too before that had that song on by them. Besides, I don't know of any song(outside of her Xmas CD) where you hear her sing in chorus like 'she does' in that song, which sorta gave away that it wasn't Jewel. I personally think it sounds like Jewel's voice though but then again I'm not that acoustically sensitive either so quite a few of female voices sound like Jewel's voice to me. (repost from 1997) Hi all, Since it seems that the EDAs are going through a bit of "group self-analysis" lately, I thought I'd repost something I posted a few years ago about the history of The EDAs. It's a bit dated, but since there's current interest in this, it seemed worth reposting. I hope it helps the discussion. MrBB ********************************************************* Hi All, Something I've wanted this list to do for a long time is to figure out a way to better educate new EDAs, so that they can understand what makes these Jewel mailing lists (and The EDAs) unique amongst the countless other mailing lists out there. An incredible amount of history has gone down since a few guys from San Diego started an Ecto-list discussion about an unsigned singer songwriter named Jewel Kilcher back in 1994. What I've written up (below) certainly only skims the surface but I know it will help many of you who have joined us in the last year or more. Please take a few minutes and read this. I must acknowledge that I'm going on my own memories so others can certainly elaborate on almost everything I'm saying. Theres countless things I've omitted, but I think its a relatively decent overview of the EDA history so far. ************************************************* Understanding The EDAs History (aka "I just subscribed to this Jewel list, and damn, am I confused!") In 1994, a small Internet discussion group called "Ecto" featured discussion focused on the music of a Bearsville NY musician; Happy Rhodes. In addition to this common interest, Ecto members also enjoyed educating one another about female musicians that might also be of interest. Several of these Ecto subscribers were from San Diego and began a discussion about a local coffeehouse singer songwriter named Jewel Kilcher. These same fans circulated several audience recorded cassettes of Jewel's InnerChange performances to each other, which increased interest in the young newly signed artist. As Ecto interest grew and Jewel's debut album "Pieces Of You" was released, an offshoot discussion group began which focused primarily on Jewel's work and live performances. The jewel@smoe.org mailing list/discussion group began officially on Sunday, February 19th, 1995. Like thousands of other Internet discussion groups dedicated to a musician or band, these several friends continued discussing their common fascination with Jewel's lyric content, music and vocal talent. They also traded live recordings amongst themselves, which gave them a far wider perspective on Jewel's prolific output than the average Jewel fan only familiar with her debut album. Through their efforts, many more North Americans became interested in Jewel and began an organized effort to promote her small residency tours and began calling radio stations in support of her new album. Interest continued to grow and a handful of websites were created to educate new Jewel fans over the course of the next year or so. Jewel appreciated this particular group of people very much and they were deemed her "EveryDay Angels" (aka EDAs). Jewel's management also occasionally monitored the discussion and provided an information flow that helped keep these internet fans informed of Jewel's projects and tour dates, often long before the media cared to notice. Over the course of the following year, many of these Internet fans would meet at Jewel's performances and strong friendships beyond the daily email discussion began. The EDA numbers continued to grow through 1995 and early 1996, but unlike other large Internet groups, (and thanks to the examples of veteran members,) this discussion group continued to be one of the most intelligent, inspired and friendly places anywhere on the Internet. In mid 1996, a young woman from Lawrence Kansas (Duff Martin) suggested how enjoyable it would be if Jewel were to perform a concert exclusively for this discussion group. Timing was right. Jewel and her management agreed that this would be a fun idea. The subscribers were informed that Jewel would enjoy doing this provided the fans join her in Bearsville NY (where she'd soon be recording) and organize all the details themselves. After much online organizational effort, a free private show was planned for July 18th, 1996 at The Bearsville Theater near Woodstock, NY where Jewel had been rehearsing and conducting band auditions during the month. A second benefit show was also planned for the following night with all proceeds going to help the struggling Bearsville Theater. (Note: In case you didn't know, your list manager, Mike Connell and fellow listmember Akira aka Richard Chang, were primarily responsible for coordinating this event.) Hundreds of EDAs from all over North America converged in Bearsville and spent three days camping together and experiencing two of the most diverse and engaging performances of Jewel's career. Most importantly, meeting each other for the first time, a bonding occurred amongst all attendees. This event was named "JewelStock" and the fans created t-shirts, buttons and came bearing gifts of tapes, food and good cheer for new friends. This event would soon become legendary. Everyone who attended, left Bearsville significantly changed by the experience of Jewel's kindness as well as by the bonding experience that occurred during the three days and nights spent enjoying each other's company in person. Subscribers to the EDA discussion group were no longer "email addresses" and became real people for the first time in each others perspective. That such a diverse group of people could come together and create something so great, all of them motivated by love and a desire to share, without any monetary pressures or incentives, speaks volumes about what the EDAs are all about. The dynamics of the discussion group were forever changed by this experience. JewelStock had a profound effect on all subscribers. The EDAs began taking Jewel's lyrical messages to heart and manifesting them in projects that helped to support each other as well as to promote volunteer work helping to improve their own individual communities. The EDAs have done some amazing things over the years, many of which have been selfless acts of kindness that have had dramatic impacts on both the recipients of these acts as well as for the EDAs that have participated. A wonderful example of this occurred in conjunction with Jewel's 23rd birthday. Rather than give gifts to Jewel, the EDAs encouraged each other to find a way to effect positive change in the world. In doing so, they demonstrated that Jewel's humanitarian messages were understood and resonating in the individual lives of EDAs everywhere. In April of 1997, the entire EDA list organized to help a severely injured "hit and run" victim named James P Kalanick, who had no medical insurance. James was in need of a van outfitted with special lift equipment so that he could be mobile, return to work and resume a more enjoyable life. The EDAs were incredible and raised quite a lot of money which was donated to the JPK Fund and helped James accomplish these goals. But beyond that , EDAs spent time with James, gave him favorite tapes, brought him to area shows and took all this to one more important level--friendship. This was a wonderful experience for all involved and demonstrated that the EDAs were taking Jewel's messages to heart and "finding where positive change can be made" and manifesting these ideas into reality. With the EDA numbers rapidly growing to the thousands, several members began organizing a nonprofit foundation (EveryDay Angels Foundation aka EDAF) which promoted and helped organize continued community volunteer work. Many other projects including blood drives, clothing drives, food bank work, children's hospitals and battered woman shelters volunteer work have taken place, amongst other worthy endeavors. Along with these various projects, organizing "EDA Gatherings" also became a major focus, which continued spreading the original "JewelStock" experience to many others. A major offshoot facet of these gatherings is known as "The Living Room Tour"(aka LRT). The LRT is a "virtual continuous tour" that encompasses many artists selected by EDAs instead of the standard touring concepts known in the entertainment industry. It's an ongoing project where EDAs book shows (and entire tours) by artists of interest directly into fans homes (or yards). The idea is to eliminate management, promoters, agents, etc., and book shows directly into fans homes and promote the performances cost free via email directly to those interested. This intimate approach has dramatically changed the dynamics between the performers and audience members who've participated. The musicians who've participated revel in the fact that everyone is there to really listen and the EDA audiences experience a "one on one" closeness not experienced in a "traditional setting" type performance. This has been enormously successful and has changed and improved the perspective of all artists and fans who've participated. The LRT phenomenon continues to positively change the lives of both musicians and fans. An annual EDA reunion in Bearsville has also been well attended and smaller EDA parties and get-togethers are common. EDAs travel far and wide to attend these special events. Having personally met hundreds of you at shows and events over the past few years, one of the things I definitely recognize about The EDAs (and Jewel's fanbase in general), is that for many, myself included, a radically anti-cynical approach to life is not just a shared disposition but also an act of conscious dissent. It's a protest against the anger and thoughtlessness that characterizes so much of our social and artistic temperament these days. Many people will continue to perceive the EDAs as naive, but I'm convinced their vision of community IS a desirable thing. Thus my dedication and unending support of The Living Room Tour, The EDAFoundation, group volunteering and anything that gets you away from your computers and meeting each other for real. That's where a big difference occurs. To many of Jewel's fans, especially the younger ones who never experienced the 60's, Jewel is virtually unique in post-Vietnam War musical history: a female musician and songwriter who is functioning as an ongoing, binding central point in a large scale fan scene that is viewing her music as reflecting their own vision of a better, more hopeful and open minded society. Thousands of lives have been enriched through the efforts of EDAs. Many feel blessed to be included and the recipients of The EDAs common good will. As a veteran EDA, this is what irks me most about this list. Being an EDA is an approach to life??? This is not Scientology, nor is it The Celestine Prophecy or Deepak Chopra. Being on this list, to me, simply means being a fan, admirer, and follower of Jewel Kilcher's music and other artistic endeavors. I think the list does itself a disservice when we resort to this new age rhetoric. It is a pitfall Jewel herself has fallen into recently also as she has become increasing "spiritual" and "religious" in both her works and her interviews. And, as always, I would like to remind you all that as supposedly her biggest fans, we should be the most critical, not the least critical. Nothing bothers me more than the type of person who equates fandom of an artist with accepting willfully anything and everything assocaited with that artist, regardless of its quality. Just my take on it, feel free to make up your own mind, as that is the my whole point. Do not just be a sheep in the herd of Jewel adoration. Choose for yourself what you like and dislike, be it in relation to Jewel or to life in general. Being an EDA is not an approach to life because ALL EDAs ARE DIFFERENT. We are not some kind of homogeneous mass. We are separate individuals who should be judged as such. Have an opinion, don't just conform to the opinion of the masses. Later, Sean Hooks(the guy without a nickname, and no, I don't say angelfood either, I say bootlegs) "It is proof of a base and low mind for one to wish to think with the masses of majority, merely because the majority is the majority. Truth does not change because it is, or is not, believed by a majority of the people." - -Giordano Bruno ------------------------------ Date: Wed Jun 14 12:52:36 2000 From: Minnie822@aol.com Subject: * Rehey hey angels-- haven't written in a while.
