Well, I just found out that my PBS station will be airing Austin City Limits on June 6. So, I'll tape it for any of you out there who are looking for a copy. Please e-mail me personally if you're interested. I suggest those of you who think PBS won't be airing it in your area should look at the PBS website first, if you didn't already. "This is a slap in the face to Canadians?" Paul, lighten up. Try slow, deep breathing. Breath in…breath out…breath in…breath out. I doubt that half the citizens of Canada have lost any sleep over Jewel's tour schedule. Jewel, being but one single person, can not possibly entertain the entire population of the world by performing personally everywhere. Are there any Jewel fans who can honestly say that he/she has enjoyed easy access to as many Jewel performances as they would ever wish to attend? Probably not. You asked for the opinion of "older" EDAs ("Old" is a relative term. I live in Florida, which makes me feel quite young-if you know what I mean.). Let's just say that when I was born, we didn't have the luxury of satellite concerts because, there weren't any satellites in orbit. In the year 2000, just about anyone, anywhere, at any time, can access Jewel performances with little effort. How about the upcoming Radio Shack concert, Internet video and audio, CDs, and videotapes? All those wonderful resources are still fairly new technology. Let's (all of us) try to be a little more appreciative of all the Jewel access we've got and, not get too bent about what we don't have. I thought it would be some sort of festival so I was pretty surprised when I saw a bunch of formal people. It started about 8.30 and a man told us what NRDC was and did. Jewel came on after 45 minutes, I think. Before she came on they showed a video from HGH about the water project. She played 3 songs. She started with Inocence Maintained and told us that she just flew in from Alaska and about the water there. After that she played A Life Uncommon. Then she told us she wrote that for her friend who died 1,5 yrs ago and that most of her songs aren't about her personal feelings and that it was hard for her to write about her friend up until now and that she wrote a new song for her and that we were the first ones to hear it ( except for her dad ) The song was really pretty. It went something like Seasons come and seasons go... I can't remember the rest. After that we left. I don't want the files, i just want to know if he's released a new album, or whatever. - -Erica Power List Moderator Note: newer subscribers to this list may not realize this, but Steve Poltz is an integral part of Jewel music, both creatively and in performance. He took Jewel under his wing when she was just starting, has co-written many of her songs (including You Were Meant For Me) and has toured with her as an opening act (solo and with his former band, The Rugburns) and a member of Jewel's band on the recent Spirit tour. Posts about Steve, while in most cases are NJC (No Jewel Content), from this point on will be allowed, as long as they are about his music and/or his professional relationship with Jewel, and as long as it does not get out of hand. - Mike ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Jun 2000 14:11:45 EDT From: "Kelli Coppens" Subject: * MORE INFO ON NYC JEWEL-RADIO SHACK ATTENTION ALL EDAS PLANNING ON ATTENDING THE JEWEL CONCERT EDA GATHERING AT RADIO SHACK IN NYC: I recently posted that we would be meeting at the radio shack at 901 Avenue of the Americas in NYC. Well, some people arent sure as to where this is so I found out.... OKAY! This confusing address is actually a very easy spot to find! Its the Radio Shack in the MANHATTEN MALL at 34th and 6th. I spoke to them and they told me that their store IS large enough for a big group of people and they WANT me to "SPREAD THE WORD AND BRING AS MANY PEOPLE AS I WANT"!!! So don't worry about being a burden to these salespeople at all! Good news right! Note to Tom: The train will take you to port authority which is 42nd and 8th; from there, just take the subway right to the Manhatten Mall - i dont know which line it is but you can find it from any map in port authority. Also: Tom Miles suggested about who wants to hang out during the day, since this is a Thursday, I dont know how many will be able to but if so... please post so people will get an idea. I think an AFTERWARDS hang out is a definite!!! I would love to get together before the show but June 8th is the last day of school (i work at a middle school) and its gonna be too crazy to take that day off!! any questions just email me!! I totally agree with what was said about "a slap in the face to Canadians" only because I UNDERSTOOD what he was saying! About Mac's comments on what Paul said: <> and Mac's remark: <> Pauls remark was taken completely out of context! When he was talking about offending half the population, he was not referring to Jewel offending them, he was referring the that persons comments on Canada, since they obviously knew nothing about Canada! As for the slap in the face to Jewel fans, it IS quite a slap in the face, and I live near Toronto, so it would have been quite easy for me to make it to her ONE concert if other circumstances hadn't arouse. It is not very likely that most Canadians can travel that distance to go to a concert! So by her not playing any other dates, it just told the rest of Canada she didn't care! Not to shoot down Americans, but most of you DON'T understand actually how big Canada is, in fact, alot of Americans are completely ignorant concerning Canada. ie. if we are the second largest country in the world, it's a little hard for someone to travel that far to get to a concert, unless they have alot of free time and money! The fact that she can jump from country to country in Europe makes it easier for her to play concerts in many different places, but the truth of the fact is, it's easy for people to travel from country to country in a small amount of time in Europe, ie. she could have played less concerts there and it would still be feasible for someone to travel from one country to the country next to them to hear her concert, but in Canada it's not feasible to expect someone to come all the way from B.C or Newfoundland to go to a concert in Toronto, Ontario because it's WAY too far away. Can't you see how that would be a slap in the face for Canadian fans when she could play plenty of dates everywhere else? As for where Canada's population (80% lives within 100 miles of the US Border), which would include me, in Toronto. I have driven to Rome, New York before and let me tell you that just the drive to the border is one hell of a drive that I wouldn't be willing or able to make to go to just a concert! Again, it is just not feasible to expect someone to go that much out of their way for a concert! Now with all that out of the way (for those of you who finished reading down to this far!) I am NOT in any way holding Jewel responsible for the fact that she only played one Canadian date, because SHE IS NOT THE ONE WHO DECIDES WHEN AND WHERE SHE PLAYS. That is left up to the people who work for her, so as hard as it is to not hold a grudge against Jewel concerning the fact that she didn't play a concert anywhere near you, it's not personally her fault. Same for the person in Europe who started this discussion by complaining that Jewel does too much in the US, it's not her who decides to not play in Europe. I still do believe that it's a big slap in the face, but not a slap in the face from Jewel, but rather from her management and the people who schedule her tours. As for WHY she is so US Centric now: The people who schedule her appearances and shows are probably trying to keep her closer to home right now so she gets a chance to finish her book and maybe work on an upcoming album, which she can't do if she has to run around the world pleasing all her fans, so give her a break! Some singers/bands completely die out for a year or two before they release a new album, at least she's still out there doing stuff! As for the Radio Shack concert, Mac, we don't get it here! nor does it look like we are going to get the Austin City Limits show where I am, but luckily there are people nice enough on this list to tape it so that others without access can watch it :) By the way: sorry I'm an arguer! I just can't help it! :) ~<3~ Sandy ~ Angeloflove@innocent.com or Angelicpoet@home.com ~ Check out my *NEW* Jewel Site at: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Boulevard/9002/index2.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Jun 2000 15:54:28 -0500 From: "Karacostas, Derrick W." But as part of her Spirit Tour, we were very much ignored. I happened to be at the single Toronto show she played, and at the time I wasn't aware that that was the only show. I don't think that we keep saying "more more more" or are demanding too much from Jewel.. if anything at all. I just think it would have been nice if she would have played more shows in Canada. I'm not saying she has to or that she isn't doing enough already. In the end, as Paul mentioned, it comes down to the revenue from the concerts. I just thought Jewel wasn't all about the money.. but apparently her management is. That's understandable as well.. I just wish it could be more about the music sometimes. Oh well.. that's all.
