Your argument makes no sense whatsoever. Canada is the second largest country in the world. It has a total land area of 9,976,140 sq km. [1] Canada's population density is 3.4 people/sq km (8.7 people/sq mi). By contrast, Europe has a population density of about 134 people/sq mi. [2] Roughly 80% of Canada lives within 100 miles of the US border. The "coastal highway" you mention is a figment of your imagination. From Vancouver, BC, on the west coast, to St. John's, NF, on the east coast is about 5 300 km (2 400 mi). Europe has a far, far denser population (read: less diversified and expansive) than Canada it would have been much, much easier to go from Copenhagen to Hamburg -- she played those cities on consecutive nights -- then to go from Calgary or Charlottetown to Toronto. Since you are obviously extremely nescient about Canada, I'll let you know that you've now offended about half the country's population. (I can hear the "Toronto is not the centre of the universe" chants already.) It simply would not have been feasible for someone from outside Ontario to go to the Toronto show. By playing only one date, Jewel told Canada she didn't consider it important. The reason Jewel played one show in Canada was purely financial. She played Europe because Atlantic wanted her to play there, to increase Europeans' awareness of her. By contrast, Canadians already receive ABC, CBS, CNN as well as dozens of US magazine, and are well aware of Jewel. The Canadian dollar is worth about US$0.67; ticket revenue from a Canadian venue would be significantly less. Since Jewel wouldn't make as much money playing Canadian dates, her management threw one in as a token. This isn't mere conjecture; it was openly stated that the 1999 edition of Lilith Fair had significantly fewer Canadian tour dates because those dates weren't profitable. This is a slap in the face to Canadians; as older list members will attest, her residency tour at C'est What and her early Canadian club shows helped her as an artist back when she needed it. Three years later, Jewel simply wasn't gracious enough to return the favour. Last night a member of both of these lists sent on a post expressing dismay at a reply he had received from JMerch in regards to a question he and others had about the destination of the proceeds from the auction. It was not his fault (he was just sending on what he received from them), but it turns out he received inaccurate information from "JMerch", who of course is the official Jewel store and handlers of the presently ongoing online Jewel auction. While the post went on through to the unmoderated EODA list, I held it up from the moderated EDA list for one basic reason. While I myself was dismayed at the information posted, I had to verify it as I had adopted an EDA list policy about a year ago to verify all posts with "information from JMerch", as we had a few problems with inaccurate info being posted. (again, through no fault of the person sending on the post, back then it was usually a misinterpretation problem). A sent on a copy of the post to JMerch, and this is the letter I just received from them in reply. Mike - EDA list manager / EODA list member P.S. Please note that Chuck did not know about the EODA list until just a few minutes ago (after he wrote this message), and only addresses the EDA list in it. _______ The letter from JMerch: Dear Mike and Jewel fans, It has come to our attention that inaccurate information was released concerning the Jewel auction at auctions.com. Due to the huge increase in correspondence that has been generated by the auction, people unfamiliar with both future Jewel plans and auction details were put in a position to answer auction questions. Primarily these individuals were asked to assist bidders and answer questions regarding how payments may be handled. We have recently learned that an uninformed and unauthorized response was sent to an EDA list subscriber. The individual who responded to the EDA list subscriber was not knowledgeable enough to reply to questions regarding auction expenses or revenue distribution. From the auction's inception, the main goal of the auction was to have JMerch provide much needed revenue to Higher Ground for Humanity's Clearwater Project to provide clean drinking water to people who do not have it. Secondly JMerch aimed to provide some online fun and excitement to Jewel fans throughout the world by offering some personal effects of Jewel's. Fans have been requesting an auction for many years, and JMerch wanted to fulfill some of the fan requests. HGH is receiving a portion of each auction sale. The rest of the money raised for the auction goes towards the cost of the physical merchandise and toward defraying the costs associated with creating, maintaining and operating the auction. We sincerely hope that the Jewel Auction continues to provide some fun and excitement for Jewel fans while simultaneously providing much needed revenue for HGH's Clearwater Project. Should you have any further questions concerning this letter, please contact me directly at JMerch. Thank you for understanding JMerch's position on this delicate matter. We value your incredible contribution to the EDA List. Respectfully, Chuck JMerch - auctions@jeweljk.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 16:47:06 -0400 From: MrBB Subject: * MrBB: Jewel Launches JeweLink! Hi again each & every one of you, After years of you patiently waiting, we are about to fulfill another longtime J-Team promise to you. This coming Friday we are very happy to be finally launching JeweLink, Jewel's official mailing list. As oldtimers know, Jewel has been collecting mailing list fan info since the InnerChange days back in 1993, when you had to physically sign up at her coffeehouse gigs. Thankfully, we're all more technically aware now, and we (Jewel included) want to have the ability to communicate more directly with all of you. Today the EDA's are comprised of approximately three thousand people while Jewel's mailing list database is over ten times that number. We want to expand communications and continue to grow our relationship with all Jewel fans. It's important to say that JeweLink is in no way meant to replace these great EDA/Jewel discussion lists. Although occasional interactive things will occur, JeweLink is not a discussion list at all. It will be Jewel's official communications list and hopefully will enhance your EDA experience, directly connect us all a lot better and include more people. There's a lot more of you who want to be connected and it's time to include everyone. I'll continue to keep you informed with JeweLink, but we'll be more like a real newsletter with direct input and content from Lenedra and Jewel. The purpose of JeweLink is to link you to Jewel & Jewel fans everywhere and provide you with an official source of accurate information regarding current projects and upcoming events in Jewel's career. In addition to breaking news, advance tour date and media appearance information, JeweLink will feature special announcements from Jewel management, occasional fan invitations to special events and TV tapings, exclusive merchandise specials for subscribers, Higher Ground For Humanity project news, jeweljk.com website update notifications and best of all, messages directly to you from Lenedra and Jewel. We also plan to share favorite music, books, ideas and thoughts with you and generally form a more personal official link between us all. We look forward to establishing an even better and more enjoyable relationship with you! JeweLink will occasionally set up interactive capabilities so that you can communicate back to us and participate in special events, but it will primarily be an announcement list that should not be confused with existing Jewel discussion lists. We'll be an announcement listserv (and NOT a discussion listserv like jewel@smoe.org). Since you can only reply to JeweLink for tech-help, this "EDA/Jewel" list will remain the primary online place for all Jewel related discussion. Jewel fans in our worldwide database will be automatically sent JeweLink, but you can also subscribe yourself by simply sending an empty email to: join-jewelink@list.jeweljk.com You do not need a subject or to say anything in the message like "please subscribe me." It's really that easy. There is also a JeweLink web interface at jeweljk.com where joining is just a mouse-click away. It's located on the "email" page. Before we enter this next phase though, I want to extend a huge THANK YOU to two people who have helped every one of you as well as us. First, Mike Connell, your trusty listowner who not only keeps this great EDA community functioning, but has literally taken me from a computer newbie to understanding the dynamics and little idiosyncrasies of listserv management in the last 5 years of our friendship. Thank You Mike! Also a huge thanks to Jeff Wasilko, the smoe.org owner who created (and personally finances!) the Jewel/EDA discussion list that we all enjoy so much. Jeff is not only responsible for FREELY providing us all with the EDA experience, but he was a big help directing us to places that were valuable in our research as we created JeweLink. Thank You Jeff! Big Thanks especially to YOU, and all EDAs everywhere! You changed my life (and my name for that matter! ;-) over the past five years. It's been a wild ride! I hope you all enjoy JeweLink! MrBB ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 22:20:54 EDT From: W1GGY2@aol.com Subject: * "More Innerchange" tape trade announcement Hello! I will then email you back the instructions within the next few days. I might be interested in trading, if you have some high quality, interesting things (for one thing, I am looking for a good copy of the Java Joe's tape from 1/11/96). Otherwise, you will need to send me blanks with return package and postage. On a different note, if any of you ever have the chance to see JOY EDEN HARRISON, JASON MRAZ, RANDI DRISCOLL, OR CARLOS OLMEDA, do NOT pass it up!! They are all such awesome performers (and very wonderful EDAF supporters). Hope to see a lot of you at the Joy Eden Harrison LRC at Dennis' on the 9th!
