Jewel, made famous by a series of nice pop songs, a progression of ever- more- flimsy tank tops, and a propensity to yodel (among other things), has made her follow-up to 1995's who- knows- how- many- selling Pieces of You yodel-free. The bad news: The melodic, manicured Spirit is top-heavy with good intentions, and therein lies the rub. Jewel is so good-natured and earnest, it's hard not to find her annoying. It's even harder to criticize her big-hearted, empathetic pop without sounding grumpy: After all, who could disagree with a couplet like "We'll fight, not out of spite/ For someone must stand up for what's right"? (well, yes). Or, "And when you're drowning in deep water/ And you wake up making love to a wall" (really, who hasn't?). Spirit spills over with songs about the power of love and faith and God, all inarguable concepts, even if they give her listeners a smug sort of satisfaction that of course, when she sings, "There is a new army coming and we are armed with faith," she's talking about them. Call it sanctimony by association; morally uplifting and sweet, but a little creepy. Granted, the world doesn't need more misanthropic singers (are you listening, Marilyn?) but there are Jehovah's Witnesses who do less proselytizing than Jewel. Jewel may have a gift for stating -- and overstating -- the obvious, as well as a lack of any discernible sense of humor, but her songs are low-key and lovely, and her songwriting has improved immensely. She remains a powerful singer who has only grown more assured since her debut (Pieces of You could be distractingly rudimentary, though anyone who has only heard the redone radio singles might not be able to tell). There's nothing as immediate -- and as decidedly down- to- earth -- as "You Were Meant for Me," but there are plenty of songs about things like the fragile flame of love, and embracing the unnamed. Even Marilyn Manson might find it hard to disagree with that. But I think instead of the letters being about her and how great she is and how much we love her, we should write to her and tell her about one great thing we did for someone else! Like, do something nice for someone and tell her about it. Or if you've already done something nice for someone tell her about that. That way she knows that what she's trying to accomplish, (a better world for all of us), through music, is being acted upon. I personally think she'll like that better than anything. That way we're giving her something (hope), for her b-day, but not necessarily a gift, which she doesn't even want anyway. That's all, Adios, Brandy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 May 2000 09:20:28 -0400 From: brandy_earl@milliken.com Subject: * Re: jewel-digest V5 #140 Fellow EDA's, I have always read the entries in the Jewel Digest and I am even in EDA yearbook, but I have never really participated in anything having to do with Jewel. I love her style and her love for others. I am a huge fan of hers, but I guess not as much as any of you. I would like to help in anything that you feel is worthy of me. Also, I found something really interesting the other day. I attened a recital for Clay Powers, an artist, at the local college here in LaGrange Georgia. After his recital I was looking around at his paintings which are half collige. It's weird, he paints the back ground and then cuts out magazine pictures and pastes them in the forground. You'd have to see it to appreciate. Well anyways.... I was causually looking at the pictures when I came along a picture entitled "Soldiers patrol the old Studio". In the picture there is Jewel. She is playing her guitar with some shorts on. It is the neatest thing. I'm hoping to save up for it. The little picture costs about $300.00. Kinda expensive. But, I am willing to pay for it since it is an original. Just thought you would all like to her that bit of information. Also, I only have a 3 CDs of Jewels. I have her X-mas cd, Pieces of You, and Spirit. If anyone would be so kind to send me some of her stuff that I have never heard I would be oh so grateful. Do any of you live around Georgia? Thanks for your time, Brandy-I guess I am an angel without a name. Any suggestions? email brandy_earl@milliken.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 May 2000 18:07:00 -0400 From: "cymbaline" Subject: * Re: Jewel's B-day I think all this talk about what we should do for jewel's birthday should come to an end. Jewel's birthday is Tuesday, and there is no time to plan something, get it done and to her by her birthday. The book of random acts of kindness was done last year, by the way. I think it would be a better gift to random acts of kindness, and keep it to ourselves, rather than show off to Jewel that we did something kind. Its like we're trying to get noticed as individuals, and we're hoping that Jewel will stop and say "Oh, look... did ! how nice! and she did it in my honor!" If we're gonna do something kind, we should do it in our own honor. For ourselves. Do something kind, because you want to, do it for yourself (rather than for a celebrity), and you'll acheive a higher sense of satisfaction when you do it. You'll feel so good about doing it. And if you want to do something kind in honor of Jewel... don't do it for her birthday... that is kind of tacky. ("look, jewel. i took the time to walk an old lady across the busy road, because it was your birthday!") Do it in honor of her at any other time, and it would be more meaningful. I think a RANDOM gift to Jewel, at a RANDOM time, would show our appreciation more, anyway. I personally like it when I recieve a card of flowers from a boyfriend, when its "no-special-occassion-except-'i-love-you'." Its more special. They are completely superficial. They like songs that talk about sex, drugs, and more sex. In my eyes, Jewel's songs lyrics and poems delve deeper into the heart and mind than they are prepared for. Whoever wrote this, their heart is made of plastic. They have no clue about any of the messages Jewel has in her songs. They remark on lyrics and exactly what the words say, umm, are they looking deep enough? ~*Natalie*~ Angel of Authors ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 May 2000 21:27:05 EDT From: SAVEYORSOL@aol.com Subject: * hey guys- sonic.net ads on sonic Hey I always miss the Jewel sonic net ads, so i went to the website and you can actually download a copy of the ad. its pretty cool. chandini ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V5 #141 ***************************
