I wrote a letter to Vh1 for a new show they're making. I don't expect get on, but if I do I'll let you know.. Here it is, I hope it moves you in some little way, and you can find some parallels to your own lives.. - -- Hi, I heard that Vh1 is airing a new TV show called "Sound Affects," and thought it couldn't hurt to share my story of how a certain special artist has helped me. My name is Scott. I'm 14 years old and I live in North Carolina. I don't listen to Limp Bizkit or DMX or anything typical that would be expected of me. Instead there is a special woman who had helped me through some tough times and helped me a out a lot, to say the least: Jewel Kilcher. My parents got divorced when I was eight. My dad was abusive and did drugs, and some other stuff, and it was a mess. But that's not the point. I had to grow up fast trying to help my mom out with my sister, who's four years older than me. My mom means well, but she wasn't always the easiest person to deal with. She's Asian and really strict, so it was hard sometimes because of her quick temper. I was really down and depressed for a long period of time. Through this, I was watching Melissa Etheridge on that short-lived series on your network, "Duets". She introduced this girl named Jewel. I didn't really pay attention. I was like 'Jewel? She must be some kind of hippie!" The song "Foolish Games" really stuck in my head, however, so I got Pieces Of You, her debut CD, that Christmas. It was too slow, I was too young, I put it away for a long time. "Who Will Save Your Soul" hit. I started to listen to the CD, and I got some of it, found more of the songs catchy, and Jewel became one of my favorite singers, just because of the guitars and her voice in songs like "Little Sister." I was still having a hard time, so I listened to Pieces Of You often, just because her voice was soothing. So, I was 12, still in a gloomy mindset and depressed, not something a kid at that age should have to deal with. The Internet was getting bigger, so I went on some search engine or other and looked up Jewel. I found a mailing list called the Everyday Angels, that had something to do with Jewel. I joined, and started getting messages everyday from people. They were talking about various Jewel things, and I got interested in a particular thread of messages discussing song interpretations. I realized I had never REALLY listened to the lyrics to her songs. That night I put on my headphones and listened to the CD. Something amazing happened that night: the song I had been listening to for so long, "Who Will Save Your Soul," took on a whole new aspect for me. The words were so powerful and truthful, I couldn't understand how I had missed the messages before. All of the songs made a heavier impact, her voice more haunting on "Foolish Games," more chilling and powerful on "Amen". My life turned for the better. I went back on the Internet and found out that I could find live and unreleased songs free of charge. Jewel encouraged not-for-profit tape circles of her shows. I got some of the tapes, and the unreleased songs, however possible, made an even bigger impact than the album songs. She was speaking things about my life, whether she knew it or not. I was on the verge of a mental breakdown and suicidal tendencies a few weeks ago, now I felt a real connection to someone, and it felt good. I was truly happy finally, for long periods of time even, just because of Jewel. I still listen to Jewel. Not as much, but at least once daily. I found that I don't need her reencouragement that I was a better person and that we are all angels and that everything will work itself out, her music has made me such a stronger person that I can do it for myself. Her images and messages may be corny for people who are too cool to care, but I know for a fact that she has helped millions of people with our tedious daily tasks. She brightens my outlook on life when it seems that I don't want to go on any longer. She has truly made me a greater spirit, and for that I owe her everything. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2000 12:26:59 EST From: JeWeLzKeWL@aol.com Subject: * down so long lyrics HEY. Me and my friend were having an arguement because she was saying the words in down so long are "And then a man takes my money and like cattle we all stand." but Jewel says on the CD "And then a fat man takes my money and like cattle we all stand." In the Spirit book it says "And then a man takes my money".... she's definately saying fat..hmm whats the story with that? *Jade* - -Tiny Angel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2000 15:32:47 EST From: JewelyBug2000@aol.com Subject: * our voices I remember reading an email from someone saying they wanted to put eda's talents on their web page. I just discovered that my sister taped part of Fashion TV...:) I'm so happy! Anyway, here's the short bit that was on the video. It starts in the middle of a question to the MTV VJ Jesse Camp. Interviewer : ..so, why do, young women especially, love her so much? Jesse Camp : Jewel...well, I gotta be honest, (?), we don't know her so much, but we got to talk. And she seems like she just makes good honest music and she's really there for a lotta girls and I think Jewel is a real positive person. Backstage clip of Jewel signing a CD. The following bit is then filmed backstage : Interviewer : I find it that at a time when so much of the world is obsessed with image and fashion and external appearances, you come out with music that has such a message about spirit, about self and so much heart...are you aware of it? Jewel : I guess I've always been aware of it. I was thinking that on my deathbed looking back on my life I don't want to feel like I was foolish as to focus on what was frivulous. It doesn't really matter. It just doesn't. I mean it's find and great to play but in the end it just doesn't matter and I think what you carry with you when you die is your...the regrets of who you treated unkindly, and your proudest of who you've treated well. So...I mean I just think about it a lot. I'm weird. I just, I've always been obsessed with it. They play a clip from the Who Will Save Your Soul video. And it ends there! And forget it, I'm not even going to consider telling you what she wore during the small interview...:) Have a good one! - -- Koos van Zyl >>>>>>> The Savage Angel <<<<<<< Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. On the screen it says and then a "fat man" takes my money, and like cattle we all stand. I also agrees that she sings that on the Cd. I have noticed some discrepencies in some of her other songs, and I think sometimes when singers get into the studio they just go with it..and maybe she felt like singing "fat" man:) To me it is a sign of her talent!!!:) Amy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2000 21:55:59 EST From: BaybeeGurls4u@aol.com Subject: * JEWEL NEWSLETTER I am in this cool Newsletter about jewel if you want to join E-mail RalphLPoloS@aol.com thanks!! oh in the subject just say "JOIN" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2000 22:43:33 EST From: JADED022@aol.com Subject: * NJC: MN and surrounding areas (States)-Gathering Well, I've found a few more people for our Minnesota gathering.
