Last Autumn a former list member posted that she had just heard a radio interview in which Christina Aguilera mentioned this list and that she had been on it in 1997(?) This has never been confirmed, not that anyone really had tried, as far as I know. Just for a lark I electronically searched the lists' archives for all posts that contained "christina" or "aguilera" and only found some known "other" Christinas who other EDAs had met at EDA gatherings and a few others that I know for certain were not Ms. Aguilera.. So if indeed Ms Aguilera had been on this list, she must have been using some email address that does not include her name (like an AOL address or something) and only posted a few times, maybe once or twice. Again, whether it's true or not I do not know, but the post from last Autumn is below. Mike - EDA/Jewel mailing list owner >Subject: * Wow! (and check your local film listings) Well, little did I know that I would see Ride With The Devil today :-) I was just getting ready to leave my mom's house at 6pm, checked the movie listings and there was RWTD listed...and for $1.50 to boot. I went to the 6:30 show :-) Before I post my boring review ( j/k ), considering this film just showed up in my little town (Binghamton NY) on Friday with no fanfare nor advertisements, I suggest any of you that have not seen it yet check your local newspapers listings each week, as I have been since it was released. Knowing that it did not hit too many theatres when it was released, and had been showing up in cities here and there since then, I always felt it would show up here eventually. It may in your town too. (Elmira or Syracuse area EDAs/list members....come on down...it will be here until at least Friday!) I talked to the theatre owner and he told me that the distributors were trying to "sell" it as an "artsy theatre film", and that while many owners of that kind of theatre did not "buy" it, in some areas it should be showing up in that kind of theatre or perhaps the "second run" theatres. Something tells me if Matt Damon had not dropped out and been replaced by Skeet Ulrich, this film would have had much more fanfare. Nothing against Skeet, who has been fine in every film I have seen him in, it is just Matt is a bigger name and bigger draw right now. On to the film. Not being used to seeing films in old style mono-sound theatres, I did get used to the sound quickly (although I would rather have seen it in a Dolby equipped theatre). Being a part-time Civil War buff and former member of the North-South Skirmishers Association (a nationwide Civil War buff/re-enactment society), I myself never found the film slow in parts as some reviews said (although I can certainly see why others felt this way). Most Civil War films tend to drag in places, as they have a war story to tell, and US Civil War stories are not always 100% intriguing and exciting. Telling a war story in a day by day manner (as most are) can drag at times. Anyway, I think it was a good role for Jewel to debut in a film with and get her feet wet in the acting biz. While it was certainly the female lead, it was small enough and not too demanding. I think she did absolutely fine and really could not have done any better, considering the relatively small demands of the characters' role, except maybe the "show Skeet her behind" scene. I can imagine Skeet demanded a few re-shoots ;-) And she always looked great! Stunning in a Civil War kind of way. (and no make-up Sean! :-) Overall, as a Civil War film buff, while it was no "Gettysburg" or "Glory", I feel it was very good, quite realistic in every way I could see, told a story and told it well, and was very well done, except maybe for the scene where the Pitt Mackeson character was wearing a black wristwatch. (someone on the crew goofed :-) Tobey MaGuire was better than I expected opposite Jewel as the male lead in the film....a lot better. It is not a reflection of my thoughts of him as an actor, as he has always been good in my eyes, it is rather a reflection of the role he had to play. I was not expecting his role to be that good. It was perhaps a role typical of a 19-year-old-going-on-30 in the war between the states. A teenager battling in a war has to grow up and toughen rather quickly or he will die for sure, and this role showed Tobey as a tough 19 year old from the start. (I myself would have been a wimp in a war at 19, except maybe if the enemy was a band of Dennis Harrises' :-) Other than the over-salty popcorn, my only disappointment was that for some reason, at the closing credits the theatre did not play "What's Simple Is True"...they instead played something reggae of their own. That is the first time I ever encountered that. I will tell you right now, if I ever get elected President of the United States, that will never happen again in this country. Also, in the closing credits they listed "Aura Lee performed by Jewel". Can I safely assume that was the "Sue Lee song" that did not make the final cut? Alan? I hope you all can see it soon enough, hopefully in a theatre. I have no idea when it might be coming out on video. The web site www.dvd.com has no info on it as of yet, likely because it is still in theatres here and there. The reason for this is that it has been brought to my attention that some folks who offered tapes of Jewel on Exhale have been asking for a lot more than what all of that would cost, and that is illegal and is called profiteering. It is also against previous agreements I have with the RIAA (representing Atlantic Records) on what is allowed on this list without upsetting them. Allowing this "profiteering" can and will threaten the very foundation of tape trading/offering on this list. To all of you who would like to offer tapes of any kind to fellow list members, please understand that you can only offer "even" trades, or dubbing services for expenses of the blank tape used, a mailer and postage/shipping only. Any built-in profit at all, even "2 for 1" trades, cannot be allowed on this list. From this point on, for anyone who does offer more than a few copies of Jewel on Exhale and/or any other "hard" to get video/audio (or any other case where I deem it to be an appropriate action), I will first write them to make sure they understand the "rules" of this list regarding offering tapes before I can send on their post.
