I've been out of the picture for months, (mostly due to bouts of ill health ~ not as bad as Mary Epperson's angel, Adrian, but still wiping out much life), and have just rejoined this on-line family; last I was aware, Jewel's vid, A Life Uncommon was going to be released ~ but I haven't been able to find it anywhere in western Canada. Have any Canucks managed to find a copy at A&B, Sam's, or where ever?! If not, any word, Mr BB, or Mike or anyone, as to when we'll see this in the stores? (I guess I can order it on-line...) It would have been nice to hear "Your Song" sung at the Grammy's ~ still, it's nice to see a former member of this EDA mail list, Christina Aguilera, pick up an award : ) Picking up on the theme of the spirit of this list, I work with a non-profit youth and arts society, TSUNAMI, that's asking people to share their inspirations with each other. If you visit http://www.gulfislands.com/TSUNAMI/tsunami_watch.htm there's a form there for you to say what inspires you, what makes our world go 'round, what's kewl 2 U. We'd love to know. Cheers! It's really sad.. It was really bankable.. If only it'd been marketed right.. Maybe they'll realize their mistake and release it again, or maybe it'll do good in video.. I figured out just in time that my cable carrier recently added oxygen, so I also can begin copying my tape... While I certainly have enough VCRs to make copies(up to 5 somehow), I'm quite short on time these days (working for a brand new internet startup), so I need to figure out how to make sure I'm not spending a lot of time dealing with it... Would it likely be okay to copy just Exhale and leave the second hour blank? I don't actually have much else taped, so that would likely be my best option... Otherwise I'd need to put out a call for someone to provide me with a second hour of source material. I saw her on Mtv singing who will save your soul and I wasn't too sure about her for a while, but I listened more and more, then I started to like that song. So,my fiance and I decided to pick up POY, and the first time we listened to it we thought she was NUTS!!! Talking about faggots and jews and all that, but once I listened to the whole tape I literally fell in love with MUSIC!!! Ever since I heard Jewel pour her heart out on POY i was an instant fan... I saw her in the summer of 97 in columbus,Ohio at lilith and I was blow away!!! She started singing from backstage and walked out with the spotlight on her....Oh btw that was my first concert ever.....And later on in 97 she came to my hometown and played at the amphitheater in the toledo zoo...Oh gees I cannot even axplain what that was like for me....But anyways after that concert my dream came true to meet her......She signed my shirt and I have a picture with her signing it... she is just amazing to me....She has inspired me in sooo many ways.. I realized that I had a lot to say and I found that poetry was my way to say it.. I have had a few of my poems published in a few books....I have a website dedicated to her ummmm I learned to play the bass and have just recently bagan singing... I have been singing AVE Maria and I am going to have it recorded in my dads studio soooo...maybe I will give it to a few EDAS and they can tell me what they think I dunno....well I think this is long enough!!! Thanks for your time!!! But those who did reviewed it well and I'm sure it'll do well as a smaller, indie rental on tape. In terms of marketing however, its lack of success was hit or miss. That is, it was both surprising, yet not surprising at all, that hardly any theaters carried the film. Why? Well, it had no big stars. Yeah, Jewel is a known name, but as a musician, not an actor. And Skeet Ulrich and Tobey Maguire are more complimentary pieces than they are leading men. On the other hand, it was very well-reviewed critically and that often propels these types of films, ie: Being John Malkovich, which was also by USA Films I think, onto more screens. But then again, look at Cradle Will Rock, directed by Tim Robbins, which had a big-name ensemble cast, but it too did poorly, much like Ride With the Devil. But then Ride With the Devil and Cradle Will Rock's storylines were not as "mainstream" as say Cider House Rules, another small indie film(was that USA Films also?) that has gotten to more screens because its plot is more interesting to the multiplex average-Joe type consumer than RWTD and Cradle. Its Oscar nominations make it sure-fire success now. So the difference between a movie that gets seen and one that doesn't is often just a tweek here or a plotline here or a big name star there. All four movies I've mentioned above were reviewed favorable by critics(and if you took a tally, Cradle would probly be 4th best, Cider House 3rd, Ride With the Devil 2nd, and Being John Malkovich 1st in terms of how well they were reviewed en masse by critics; yet the ones that the most people saw were 1 and 3, not 2 and 4) so that's not the best way to success either. There are a lot of 4 star films that the average American does not see. But oh well, that's their loss. Jewel has proven her acting chops and has worked with an excellent director and many good actors, so hopefully it can only help her future.
