Write four lines of affirmation to Nedra. If that were assigned as English homework, most of us could knock it off in under five minutes. Doubt Nedra's importance? May I quote Jewel directly from the last page of the Spirit CD, "To my mom and manager, Nedra Carroll, who is also my mentor and best friend. Thank you for your mastery; your vision drives it all." And how many EDAs have mothers who, when you are/were 18, would seriously advise you not to go to school, not to seek any vocational training and, not to waste your time working at a job which might do something silly like, pay the rent? So, compose a short message of thanks to Nedra, send it to Ashley at JuelzPreciousGem@aol.com and, let's "turn the page." By the way, if Ashley entitles our conglomeration of messages as a "greeting," then Nedra can read anything she wants. Under the strictest definition of "unsolicited" would have to be included such things as billboards, magazines, road construction advisories and, absolutely anythin g written by anyone not employed by J-Merch which may happen to come into her view, unintentionally or otherwise. If you have newer (Spirit tour) material and would be willing to let me borrow it, I'll create a 90 minute tape of some rare oldies and newer material. I'd just like to send my first post to say "Hi!" - I joined this list 3 days ago and am now poking my head up to introduce myself to the list ! And here's how I discovered Jewel: For most of my life, my musical tastes gravitated towards hard rock bands (Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Metallica, Ramones, to name a few) ... the only female I listened to was Joan Jett ... then I started listening to country and discovered a different slice of music that I enjoyed (George Strait) that was a nice change of pace from what I normally listened too. Then in 1998, I started working for a local radio station producing the morning show ... the format was Top 40 CHR, a complete field of music where I was unfamiliar with about 98% of the artist on the playlist ... I discovered artists like the Goo Goo Dolls and Matchbox 20 ... found out Sheryl Crow and Madonna had alot of tracks I liked (had been a closet Madonna fan since '85) ... and I also discovered a singer that I had never heard of before (I quit listening to radio in 1992 and rarely watched videos) ... Jewel. After I had been exposed to her top 40 hits for about 4 or 5 months ... I took the plunge and bought of her CDs (POY and "Spirit"), as well as the audio CD of "A Night Without Armor" ... went home and played them back to back ... and was blown away by the voice ... my god - what a voice came out of my speakers at me ... I was hooked ! There's alot more to music than just Metallica - I didn't realize that until I opened my ears to other forms of music ... now I listen to George Strait, AC/DC, and Jewel back to back and love it ! Diversity is the spice of life indeed. And now I'm here, among the EDAs ! I had no idea he was playing until I saw a little blurb in the OC register a few hours before the show started. I called the place and they said it was sold out already. I went down there anyway a few minutes after the opening guy went on and I walked right in with no questions asked. I was pretty stoked because tickets were $20 for this tiny bar (smaller than Java Joes). I talked with Anya Marina (Steve's girlfriend) for a bit before Steve went on, she's playing Java Joes the next 2 Thursdays if anyone is interested. Steve hit the stage about 9:30 and played until midnight. It was easily one of his best shows I've seen. The crows was really into it, singing almost whole songs for him while he played guitar. Doug Pettibone, Jewel's guitarist, joined Steve on steel pedal and acoustic guitar and Anya joined him on a few songs as well. I don't remember every song he played... but here's a partial list in no particular order: Opened with a song he wrote that morning 10 chances 98 pounder song about area code change super taco something (one of his answering machine songs) look to the east good morning silver lining everything about you impalla leaving again beautiful day (the crowd basically sang this whole song for him) forbidden fruit lockjaw my carphone's on the pill tree hugger star wars song (with chewbacca impersonator from crowd growling in Steve's mic) hitchiker joe you were meant for me (with David Cassidy story) instrumental that he wrote with D. You might try the website: http://www.ride-with-the-devil.com/ You can try the registration and see if you get any reply. I hate to say this but Ride with the Devil (RWTD) was in the San Francisco bay area for maybe a month or two at most and then was gone. The bay area is one of the premier movie venues for the US so if Ride with the Devil was here and gone then Maine might have it for only a month. You'll need to check out the "art house" theaters. The little ones that play the foreign films that you never hear about and can't understand. I DID get to see RWTD and really liked it! It was definitely an "art house" film. Lots of talking, no car chases, aliens or robots but it was surprisingly action filled. More than what I gathered from the movie critics that reviewed the film. Lots of gun battles, you'll get to see a whole town trashed but the quiet moments really moved me and made me think. (Which is what art house movies are supposed to do so Ang Lee's movie was a "success.") Was Jewel good? Geez, OF COURSE she was good! When it comes out on DVD I'm buying it. I won't say anymore. I hope all the EDA's get to see the movie. By the way, I can't believe there is only one EDA in the whole state of Maine! Come on, someone speak up so Melissa (EDAngel1014@aol.com) doesn't feel all alone! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2000 21:46:18 EST From: JuelzPreciousGem@aol.com Subject: * Re: Nedra Well the thing now is we R goign to give Nedra a "greeting" That way we wont have to go throught any of that complicated stuff.
