Halo Angels, Hope this email finds you all safe and happy after the holidays. Just a few quick mentions of Jewel today on TV. First, Rock and Roll Jeopardy; Jewel was a "question" to the "answer" (and I paraphrase) "She moved from Homer Alaska to San Diego before 'Pieces of You' was a hit," under the catagory California Dreaming. Mark from Sugar Ray got it correct! (in fact he kicked butt with his rock and roll knowledge!) Then i was watching figure skating, World against US I think...Skate Challenge I think the program was called, anyways...Michelle Kwan skated to the Christmas version of Hands and got really good marks. They said it was unlike her regular style to skate to something so slow and calm and one word they used to describe the performance is one I always associate with Jewel herself; honest. Take care Angels, Erin "Love is not a rational thing." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2000 00:43:10 EST From: Sean35RL@aol.com Subject: * Re: Jewel is no natural blonde Good point. But I think it is her who is contradicting herself. There are things she does that are natural and true and real, ie: the teeth and nose like you mentioned. But then the hair goes the other way. She used to perform folk and her backing band was the Stray Gators(who played with Neil Young) now she performs pop and her producer is some guy who worked with Madonna. I think there are definitely contradictions made in these arguments on the list, but I also thing Jewel projects a heavily contradicted image herself. She decries scruinty and judgments based on appearance in her poetry and in songs like "Fat Boy" but then she herself seems so overly image conscious with the thick make-up and the fake-looking blonde hair. That's all I'm sayin'. And i think the introductory phrase on the cover is great as well: No Turning Back Jobless and broke, pop singer Jewel had little left but her dream PAGE 40 The cover is a great dramatic picture of her... very beautiful, and sad. I am pleased to invite you to two special concerts taking place January 16th, and January 23rd. They are special because of the artists and the enviroment in which they are presented. On January 16th at 5pm we are pleased to present an evening show with Edie Carey, and Nini Camps. On January 23rd at 5pm the show will feature Trina Hamlin and Lily. Admission for each show is $10 which goes straight to the performer. We are located near Fields Corner in Boston. If you want to make reservation we can be reached at this e-mail address or at (617) 288-4381. These two concerts are part of a homegrown concert series called Longfellow St. Concerts. Longfellow St. Concerts is a series of shows held in my family's house or in our backyard. Our goal is to present some of the best acoustic musicians in the business, in an intimate, comfortable enviroment. This type of show has long been the standard through the middle of the country where folk clubs are few and far between. For years artists like Greg Brown, Christine Lavin, and others have opted to play shows in peoples homes rather than risk playing a show in a local bar. Because we live in one of the richest music enviroments in the country we have been denied the privelege of seeing artists in such a small, intimate setting. Because of seeing how special some of these shows are, we decided to bring some of this special brand of live music to the city. Our concerts have an audience of 20-30 people making each show a special evening for audience and artist alike. It is very hard to describe how special these shows are. The only way to know what they are like is for you to come one. Once you have seen the joy in the artists faces you will never want to miss a show. Seeing an Edie Carey show is like watching someone read a diary of their deepest thoughts. Whether singing about an enveloping love, or talking about her childhood pet Edie has a wonderful ability to make you think you're sitting down with a life long friend. Her songs are overflowing with emotion. From the mother's grief of "Black Wool Dress" to the love, and joy of "I Never Thought I'd Say This" to the self loathing of "If I were you" Edie's songs take you on a complete emotional rollercoaster. "Edie Carey has the voice, the songs, and the presence that will take her right up alongside such stars as Shawn Colvin and Ani DiFranco," Matt Smith of Club Passim. "She effortlessly lures people into her musical spell, and then she continues to entrance when the music stops." http://www.folkweb.com/ediecarey http://www.mp3.com/ediecarey Nini combines the excitement of a rock concert, the intimacy of a diary, and the passion of a hot Miami night. Her songs rock with a passion, and intelligence rarely found in todays musicians. When she sings a song like "I Thought I Knew You," there is no doubt that you are hearing everything she has. Nini's songs range from a the love of "Mi Amor" to the NiNi Camps, a native of Miami, left the palm trees and espresso of her hometown for the concrete island of Manhattan in the early '90's. Before long, she was playing solo acoustic shows at the Bitter End and other NYC venues. Nini's folky, pop songwriting, laced with a hint of her Cuban heritage, attracted a large audience, as well as some of the best musicians in town. So, in the summer of 1997, NiNi formed her band, LOVE PIE! LOVE PIE's recently released, self-titled debut album has been receiving rave reviews as well as radio airplay. "Her songwriting is as solid as her guitar playing is sure...she rocks. Nini is at her best playing hard with style. Just good music." NiNi and her band were featured on the WB hit series, FELICITY, and they have also participated in several national promotional events with Levi's Jeans and Elle Magazine. http://www.lovepie.com Trina Hamlin has been playing coffeehouses, and clubs around the New York scene for the past four years. She has become a fixture at such New York clubs as CBGB's and The Living Room. In 1998 Trina played two amazing sets at The Newport Folk Festival. She opened Sunday with a set on the main stage and was followed by such artists as Ani Difranco, Dar Williams, and The Indigo Girls. Trying to describe what Trina Hamlin is like in concert is like trying to describe Monet to someone who has never been able to see. There are things that Trina does with a harmonica that I have never heard since. She is a ball of firey energy from the get go, that picks you up and takes you on a musical journey through blues, folk, rock, and roots music. There is an energy watching Trina like few other artists I have ever seen. She is a performer that needs to be seen live to truly be appreciated. http://www.trinahamlin.com So If these artists, and the uopcoming concerts sound of intrest here are the details once again. Start Time: January 16th 5pm, January 23rd 5pm. Location: 39 Longfellow St. Boston, MA Performers: Edie Carey, and Nini Camps on the 16th Trina Hamlin, and Lily on the 23rd. "Quit messing with my head!!!!!" *screams* There's a pic in the September issue of Reader's Digest, shes five and has, I guess you'd call it dirty blonde hair cause it is kinda dark. If Jewel's not a true blonde thats ok with me, but after seeing 3 years worth of blond pictures saying that shes not a true blonde is really messing with my head maybe it's because Im a guy and I'm not used to the hair dying stuff. Mike you always have accurate news info please help me my brain cant handle all this. Eliot~an angel confused by hair color ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jan 2000 13:16:05 EST From: LdyWillow9@aol.com Subject: * Re: Jewel is no natural blonde Personally, I could care less about her hair, until some of you started mentioning it, I never noticed it. It's no big deal. Hair is hair. It's her body and her mind and she has the right to do what she wants with it. If she wants to paint her sking purple, she can go right ahead and do it, I won't argue. Sure, it'd be a litle odd, but who are we to scrutinize her in this way? For all we know, she may be a member of this list and reads every thing we say about her. How do you think we're making her feel about this entire 'ordeal'. It's no ordeal at all. It's just a box of hair color. As I said, I never even realized it was fake, it looks perfectly real. Sure, her roots may be a little darker, but so what? I'm sure, for her image, she colors it again once a week or so on so her roots don't get too dark. This is probably to save herself from this type of thing we're all doing to her by complaining about it on the list. She's a star and maybe she wanted a change. If any one of you had the fame she has, wouldn't you do something to better yourself? Maybe she didn't like her hair it's natural color.
