This whole discussion is kind of silly in reality, but it is an issue that irks me, much like the make-up issue. I just hate to see so many young women on this list who look up to Jewel as a role model having to see that, it must be very discouraging for those women in the world who are strong and intelligent enough not to bow to the conventions of "what a woman should look like." My name is Amy and I'm a newbie to the group from Minnesota so I thought I'd first off introduce myself, so Hi! :) Secondly, I wanted to say that I believe Jewel's hair is supposed to be pretty dark. Not really brown but sort of a dirty blond. Although I did like her a lot with brown hair and it is my preference (I am brunette and partial! lol) I think the blond-ness just contributes to her very swiss look. :) Amy (An American Indian angel! ;) ) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jan 2000 23:25:15 +1300 From: "Stace" Subject: * re : question about "song for a winter's night" Hey Jade, yeah i've got that song. I was wondering the same thing myself. Funny thing is, i've seen another version of "song for a winter's night" that's just Sarah Mclachlan on her own. And the song is like twice as long.... So i thought that maybe on the Jewel and Sarah version, that's it's been cut in half and that Jewel came on later... i dunno. Did you get it from Napster by any chance? I've seen songs from there before that were listed with the wrong artist (ie "leaving on a jet plane" ... it said that was Jewel and it wasn't..) Hope you figure it out :) Staci McFly - the kiwi angel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jan 2000 09:02:44 EST From: AphroditeSkye@aol.com Subject: * Re: Jewel is no natural blonde Because she dyed her hair blonde shes a sell-out? um, I dyed my hair blonde and millions of people dye their hair. whats the difference? maybe she just wanted a change. I personally like her hair blonde. If anything she is happy with who she is but I'm 15 and I got bored with my hair. when you get older, you tend to want a change. Its that simple. and its not discouraging because it looks natural, first of all. (blue would be a total different story) Just because she dyes her hair or highlights it just shows that she has a high sense of self because she knows that her hair would look good a certain color. Anyway, I know you've talked about this alot but, I dont see a "new Jewel" I think she just wanted a style change. were all used to seeing her when shes so young and now that shes maturing and wants to look glamourous we call her a sell out? were supposed to be her fans not her critics. We should enjoy her work for what it is and be glad that shes happy. There's various degrees on blondeness, ranging from platinum (I have a friend who's two youngest children have beautiful platinum hair), and dirty blonde/dark blonde... which can sometimes be considered "light brown". I am a blonde, my hair has gotten darker and is now an ashy light brownish, but I highlight my hair, because I look much better with lighter blonde hair. Therre is nothing wrong with Jewel highlighting her hair to make it blonder. If she wants to do that, we shouldn't criticize her for not staying with her "natural beauty". By saying "I don't think Jewel would dye her hair, because she is all about being natural" or whatever, is wrong. Do we know her personally? And what would be so tragic if she dyed her hair light blonde? The wort is that the toxins could seep into her brain and make her the dumb blonde you hear about all the time, LOL. :) So cut Jewel some slack, she looks great with her hair light. Just wanted to know Thanks Angel xxx List Moderator Note: newer subscribers to this list may not realize this, but Steve Poltz is an integral part of Jewel music, both creatively and in performance. He took Jewel under his wing when she was just starting, has co-written many of her songs (including You Were Meant For Me) and has toured with her as an opening act (solo and with his former band, The Rugburns) and a member of Jewel's band on the recent Spirit tour. Although first included in a live version on "Future Folklore Volume 3" (by Gregory Page), It can also be found in studio versions on both Gregory Page's album "The John Doe Sessions" and on Steve Poltz's solo album "One Left Shoe". Each recorded thier own version. It's a great tune and not to be confused with Jewel's "Great Mystery Show", which is a completely different song. Many of you newer subscribers may not know this, but there was an original/first video of "You Were Meant For Me" (YWMFM) that was directed by Sean Penn, using the "Juan Patino version" from the YWMFM/Phyllis Barnaby Finally Gets A Bra promo CD. This is the same YWMFM version that is on the Rare Angels angelfood tape many of you have, and the video in no way at all resembles the 1996 video most of you have likely seen. It was filmed October 10th 1995 (the same day she taped VH1 Duets with Melissa Etheridge) and was released shortly thereafter. Anyway, for those of you that get this channel, I read in a late December USA Today that beginning on January 1st 2000, MTV2 would begin showing EVERY video that MTV aired since its' inception in the early 1980s. (Note, that is MTV2 that is airing these videos, not MTV). There are over 20,000 different videos they are running, and they are showing them in alphabetical order by title of the song, not by artist. The article in the paper said it would take until March or so to run them all, and being a "Y" song the original You Were Meant For Me video would obviously air near the end of the run of 20,000. This will be a RARE taping opportunity for collectors and folks who have not seen this video yet (like me). Could someone who gets MTV2 verify that they are doing this (airing all of the videos), and keep us posted as to when the "Y" videos begin to run? Heya angels :) I'm a little confused myself now. I also read somewhere that she dyes it, and if you look at her highschool pics it WAS darker. So I think she probably does. On the other hand, much like many little girls, as a child she was blonde. Then again- so was I, and my hair is now brown-reddish, so that doesn't mean anything. your hair does change in certain lights, but it never goes from brown to blonde.
