Hey A lot of people have been posting to the list about 'Ride with the Devil' not being shown in many theatres where they live. Well I went to Yahoo box office site and I've discovered that as of this week 'Ride with the Devil' is only playing in 60 theatres around the country. USA Films obviously sees no point in putting into thousands of theatres (most wide release films are in 1,500-3,000 theatres) since the limited release grosses for the movie have been disappointing (they had a reasonable first week average.. but it dropped massively after that). And this week wasn't any better. It grossed around $90,000 in 60 theatres which gives it an average of approximately $1500 per theatre. A decent average in $5-6000 per theatre and an excellent average is between $10,000-15,000 per theatre. I imagine that over the next few weeks the number of theatres will increase... but it all depends. USA FIlms have done a completely horrible disaster screw up job of marketing the film. it doesn't have any major stars (except Jewel but she's not known for film) so they have to market it in other areas but they haven't really marketed it at all. It's recieved mostly glowing reviews so they could capitalise on that. they could also reduce people's skepticism about jewel by using some of the better comments about her performance in tv ads and clearly idenitifying the source (you know how some ads say "WONDERFUL FILM" but the source is like "garden weekly newsletter, kansas" or something..) if they had of done that they might have gotten some more attention directed at the film which might have gotten it some golden globe nominations.. which is turn increases the interest... but so far.. nothing. maybe they'll market it toward the oscars and see if they get lucky on that. but i doubt it.. it seems USA Films have written it off... which is incredibly sad since it's one of the best films I have ever seen.. certainly the best made about the civil war. for all those who said it was long and boring... i could barely believe what i was reading. it was FAR from boring.. it was incredible. very insightful. anyway... hope this explains some things for all those wondering steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Dec 1999 22:26:10 EST From: Sabato229@aol.com Subject: * Jewel repeat on "Later Today" (Wednesday) I just saw a commercial saying that they're going to repeat the show that Jewel did after Thansgiving on the "Later Today" show (NBC, tomorrow morning i live in Ohio and it's on at 9 am so check tv listings if you wanna catch it) That's all, Angie ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1999 03:25:29 GMT From: "~* cymbaline *~" Subject: * Re: NJC: Steve on aol...
