Thats very true. People may say that because of Jewel, they didn't commit suicide, or whatnot... But it was their own choice that made them not commit suicide. I admit there have been a few times this year where I wanted to die so badly. I was almost ready to do anything drastic, but listening to a CD of Jewel... if a specific song or lyric came on... it fit my situation, and I'd think twice. But I'd never say that "if it weren't for Jewel, I'd still be alive." Because it was my own descisions and *many* (and I mean many) failed attempts, that kept me here. What actually gave me the will to live was a friend I had. I never wanted to disappoint him by doing anything drastic, especially after the endless 'counseling" he gave me. And am I the only one that is glad that it's only in a few theaters? Don't get me wrong, I want Jewel to be popular, but for the right reasons. First of all, I haven't even seen the film yet, even though it's playing within walking distance from my house. (midterms...) Anyhow, from what I hear, Ang Lee directs more "artsy" films. Therefore, the movie is put out into theaters that will attract a more "artsy" feel... Imagine for a moment the average non-eda non-skeet ulrich addict person at the gigaplex this holiday season, deciding whether they'd rather see a civil war drama or this season's big movies. I have a feeling more people are going to want to see something that everybody else is going to want to see. Well, my friends, I don't really think "civil war drama" strikes the interest of my friends. In fact, I highly doubt I would give it a second thought if Jewel was not in it. Also, sometimes people don't make movies just for the money, they make movies to get a certain point across, or to express an opinion, or even just to experiment. IMO, Ang Lee is not angling for the average person to see this, he wants someone that will truly enjoy the entire filmmaking process as well as the actual subject matter. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Dec 1999 18:10:41 EST From: Fredsteve@aol.com Subject: * Re: jewel-digest V4 #753 In a message dated 12/19/99 6:07:42 PM Eastern Standard Time, owner-jewel-digest@smoe.org writes: > I'm assuming Ang doesn't want to make much money (if any) off of Ride With > the Devil since it's not really showing anywhere. Is that so much to ask? The fact that it's not oversatured is good, but it's completely ridiculous when I (and other list members) live in/near some of the biggest cities in the country and the movie is not playing in ANY of the theaters in the whole city. While the genre isn't exactly blockbuster material, I think this movie should have been promoted. If I wasn't a die-hard Jewel fan, I would not have known anything about it. USA Films needs to get its butt in gear and place more ads in national magazines, make a much better-quality trailer, and get the theaters to show it! <> Let Me Fly - A Jewel Page http://altern.org/jewellmf 3000+ images, daily updated, exclusives, and more! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Dec 1999 20:43:57 EST From: Sean35RL@aol.com Subject: * RWTD: Be patient Often times, with films such as this that are right on the border between being an indie and a mainstream film, there is a long delay between when the film is released in the major cities and when it receives a wider release. And since the reviews for Ride With The Devil have been resounding positive, perhaps just a little patience will be rewarded. I mean, I just saw the trailer(the preview before the movie starts) for Ride With The Devil a couple of weeks ago when I saw Being John Malkovich, an excellent film by the way. Last year, something similar to what I mentioned above happened with the film American History X, which was playing for close to two months in New York City before it got any exposure at mainstream movie theaters/multiplexes over here where I live in New Jersey. So be patient, sometimes things like this just happen with these types of films. But, if it turns out that this film just doesn't get that much exposure at all, don't blame me it's not like I have any inside info on the film. Myself, I haven't seen it yet but plan to, because it is playing New York City which is very close to me. And I am not going because Jewel is in it, I'm going because it looks like a good film and Ang Lee is an exceptional director, I ranked his film The Ice Storm as the best film of 1997 on my own personal Top 10 list for that year's films. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this film gain attention if it happens to garner any major critical awards or Golden Globe/Oscar nominations, which all do wonders for a films shelf life in theaters. For all I know we'll all be sick of the movie a few months from now because it's so overexposed. Or, like I said, it could never make it out of a few small theaters. Either way, be patient, and if worse comes to worst you'll catch it on video. Later, Sean Hooks ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Dec 1999 18:08:38 -0800 (PST) From: "Joe P.
