Referring to her Rosie appearance. Without going into too much detail, I must say I enjoyed that performance. She toned it down some, and I liked the pony-tail thing going on...that's something new for her I think....at least recently anyway. Gives her a completely different "look". Maybe someone said something to her a few months back about all that make-up...cause the last few times I've seen her on TV now, on talk shows...she's really toned it down. Whatever the reason, I like that. I know stuff like the TNT show is an exception, but that's understandable with the first family there, etc. Rosie said RWTD was out already but it's not, oh well. Haha....maybe she meant to say this coming Friday, since that's the release date. I wish I could have heard Jewel's answer to Rosie's question when she walked over to her after she stopped singing. Rosie asked her why she doesn't wear one of those earphone things in her ear to hear better. My answer (at home) was "she does Rosie! In her concerts!" Just not on her show I guess...haha. Anyway...they cut to a commercial so I didn't get to hear what Jewel said. I was hoping maybe they would continue on with that topic when they came back after the break. Kudos to Jewel for getting back to her au naturale look! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Dec 1999 00:56:27 -0600 From: "Tanner Evans" Subject: * Planet Jewel/Art Contest Hey EDAs! Once again Jewel's songs have come at a perfect time on another hit WB Show. This time Roswell. Absence of Fear came at the perfect moment. Last year, there was Hands during Dawson's Creek and Down So Long on Charmed but "Absence of Fear" is the best out of the three during the show's actual program. For those of you who don't watch it, it was still a great episode for Jewel's song to be played. They played it during the scene where Liz(human) and Max(alien) broke up. While they were talking, the piano part of the song began to play very low while they talked. I stopped and thought to myself? This is Absence of Fear by Jewel!!!! Of course, the show edits the parts they want of the song in there and then Jewel's voice appeared. I was so stunned that I didn't even listen to most of their conversation when they broke up. I couldn't get Jewel out of my head and I had to rewind it like 5 times before I put on the closed caption to read what they were saying. You name it. There was fear, love, heartbreak, someone who needed someone in the absence of fear on Roswell tonight. There's also a small picture of her there. The text of todays' blurb is below. The entire feature will likely be on the online edition of USA Today tomorrow as well. It is bound to be accesible at http://www.usatoday.com/life/lfront.htm with a link to the feature on that page. If there is an online version of the feature, I will post the text of it tomorrow. Mike :-) Coming Friday: Yule listen Rosie and Garth and Smokey are here. The South Park gang too. USA Today's music team offers its annual guide to Christmas music. Singer Jewel even stops by for a fireside (well, a backdrop of one, at least) chat. :::: the reference to a "backdrop" is in relation to the picture on todays' edition. It is a pic of Jewel in front of a "fireplace", which is likely just a backdrop. The pic looks like it may be from the photo shoot for the recent Glamour magazine feature on Jewel :::: ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 00:49:05 +1100 From: "Angeldust" Subject: * Spreckles tape including Rugburns, Jewel and Page? I was bit surprised, but not really shocked, there have been several people already telling me they're going! With me (and Nettwerk) having announced this just 2 days ago...I think that's great! Here are the names of those who have told me they're going (or going to try really hard to) :-) (I'm compiling one list from both the Jewel and Tara e-mail lists) - ----------- Farr (Oklahoma) Sari (San Antonio) Luna (Austin) Duff (?) Courtney (Dallas) Me (Galveston) Jessica (LaPorte) Amber (Beaumont) - ---------- And I know there are about 5 others who will most likely go...who live within the area. So in only 2 days, it appears that Tara's going to have quite a crowd. And this isn't even including those who happen to wonder in off the street in Austin each night. And I'd bet if anything, Saturday's show will be more crowded than Friday's once the word gets out to everyone around town after Friday's show. Then Sunday may be the crowdest of them all. Just a hunch. So if there's anyone who thinks they may be going to this...e-mail me and I'll add you to the list. If there's someone from your area already going, then maybe you can work out a carpool to save on gas. I'm trying to accurately identify two locations in Australia. I thought some EDAs down under could help me identify these two locations. Here's my descriptions of the places. See if you recognize them. (Yes, Jewel spent some very enjoyable time at each location.) #1: A beautiful park in Melbourne with various trails, a large fountain, a really interesting tree with various sleeping faces & designs carved in it, a Bavarian Shakespeare Village & a swingset shaped like a giraffe with 3 swings. What's the name of this park? #2: Is there a river located in Perth popular for boating? If so what's it called? That's it. Thanks for any geographical help! The text is below.... Mike :-) ********** Jewel spreads her collection of 'Joy' By Edna Gundersen, USA TODAY On Joy: A Holiday Collection, her first batch of holiday tunes, Jewel gravitates to classics, but not because she found inspiration in definitive recordings by such yuletide masters as Bing Crosby or Nat "King" Cole. Aside from 1997's We Three Kings by The Roches, the singer has ignored the standard seasonal discs. "I've never been a real fan of Christmas records, to tell you the truth," she says. "They're usually kind of kitschy. You get sick of listening to them." Though Jewel inserted original Face of Love and a Christmas version of pop hit Hands on the new album, she largely focused on traditional fare, including a playful Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, graceful Joy to the World and solemn Silent Night. They're not personal favorites. "I had a friend who died recently, and I picked a lot of her favorites, like O Little Town of Bethlehem and O Holy Night," she says. "I was trying for a certain tone -- celebratory, but not too centered on any one religion." Last year's Spirit (originally planned as a holiday record) and 1995's Pieces of You have sold a combined 17 million copies worldwide. Joy, at No. 34 in its sixth week, is selling modestly but could evolve into a perennial gold mine, despite a comparatively meager investment of time and labor. Between touring and writing a book of short stories and prose, Jewel recorded Joy in three days with producer Arif Mardin. "It was expedient," she says. "I'd been waiting a long time to do a record that wasn't about anything except having fun singing. It's nice to not listen to my own songwriting and to not think in terms of singles and radio." Jewel, 25, plans to spend Christmas with her boyfriend in Texas, light-years south of the frosty holidays she experienced in Alaska. "Winter was full of sleigh rides and toboggans and lots of snow," she says. "It's pretty idyllic if you like the cold, which I didn't. We were never too gift-oriented. Being poor and having a creative family meant we made a lot of arts-and-craftsy gifts for each other. We cut down our own tree. It was fun in the country. In the city, it got harder and sadder." At 16, Jewel didn't have the money to travel home for the holidays from her boarding school in Michigan. She spent Christmas alone, housesitting for a teacher. "But I enjoyed it!" she says. "I spent the time by the lake, drawing." These days, Jewel relishes her ability to lavish presents on friends and relatives, particularly her mother. What's on her own wish list? "I can't think of anything," she says after a long pause. "I hope my friends are more creative than I am." ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #747 ***************************
