Since I was at the taping, I thought I'd let you all know what it was really like. Well, because Jewel failed to sing for her radio interview an hour earlier, we were really worried that she wasn't going to appear. But when Jay came out he told the audience that although Jewel was ill she was a trooper and would still be appaering. Anyway, when Jewel's time came along she sang her Christmas song and did the interview as planned. It was obvious during her singing that she was ill because she turned around twice in between her lines just to hide her coughing. And as she told Jay during the interview, the doctor said she was on the verge of pneumonia. Well, when the show ended the host informed the audience that because of some technical problems (Jewel's audible weezing while breathing during her song) they would need to do Jewel's song again. Well that's when Jewel started entertaining. The crew had to reset some of the instruments and stuff like that so Jewel starts getting a little chatty to the audience. She apologized for being off pitch and asked, "Don't I walk so graciously in these shoes?" Jewel is obviously not a high-heel kind of girl. Then when some guy gave her a cup of water she said, "I know what you're trying to do...give me some whiskey to get me going, right?" The two yuppies sitting next to me actually commented on how down to earth she was and said they thought she was the highlight of the show. So, she starts the song again, with obvious difficulty and when it gets to the part where she goes real high she just makes this funny noise and turns to the producer and says, "Can't you just like, cut that or something...no..alright." Again, she started to sing and when she nailed the high part you can see the smirk of relief on her face. She got through it on the third try with no wheezing and only minimal coughing. The whole audience cheered, she waved and escaped back stage, probably to throw on sweatpants and rush home to bed. It was pretty cool. The other actress that appeared didn't seem too cool about Jewel getting so much attention. She as rather snotty and awfully flaky, but my sources say she's a true Beverly Hills girl. Course, this whole episode still doesn't beat what happened at the Craig Kilborne show the last time she appeared. Now, this is funny. First of all, the Kilborne show was awesome to go to because the audience is so small and the interview so long. Jewel was about ten feet from me and when I saw her roadie bring out the blue guitar I was so psyched!! Seeing her sing "What's Simple is True" with just the guitar really makes me believe she should ditch her band for her next tour. Anyway, during the commercial her roadie was messing with her equipment and Jewel was chatting with Craig. Meanwhile, the audience-host guy that stands out there with everyone and talks to them was striking up a conversation between an old lady in the back row and a young kid in the front row, who both happened to be from Arkansas. Well, the old lady yelled down to the kid in the front row, "Are you a guy or a girl?" Jewel thought the lady was talking about her long-haired roadie who was down there fixing her equipment, not an audience member from Arkansas, and she snapped back, "I think you need to get some glasses, lady!!" Well, for the rest of the show the audience-host had some not-so-kind remarks to make about Jewel that had the audience laughing. Jerk. Anyway, what was really cool was that they needed to record some promo for a commercial and they had Jewel sing just the end of "You Were Meant for Me" with Craig's arm around her. Then when she got to the end, Craig finished and sang the last "me." Well, after the first take the producer asked her if she could sing a couple more lines and she says, "I could do the whole song if you want." That's when me and my friend start screaming, "Do it!! Yeah!! The whole song!!" Jewel looks over at us, and politely says, "Now, behave!" Maybe she recognized us as the only two chicks to give a standing, screaming ovation two days before when she sang, "What's Simple is True" on the Tonight Show. (She flashed us the peace sign when we did it). Anyway, we shut our mouths and they finished the promo of "You Were Meant for Me" and it was really cool. The audience-host guy was still cracking jokes about Jewel being a bitch, but we just ignored him. Jerk. Overall, both tapings were awesome. Last night Jewel was obviously being a trooper and we felt for her. If you ever have the chance to go to a taping, I recommend you go, because behind the scenes is where the cool stuff goes on. I was reading some poetry by Charles Bukowski, (one of the people she says influenced her). I noticed a line in a poem called "Beds, toliets, you and me-" in a book called "Love is a Dog from Hell" Yes- the title is... diffrent... but the book is good- I have enjoyed all his poetry VERY much- at any rate- my comment is this: from beds, toliets, you and me- "mixed with your own green or yellow or white, or blue or lavander goodbye." Now in the song Carnivore she says "Lavender haunted you, so I could only laugh in yellow," Also she says the line "To you its all roses, it's a lavender haze..." from "Do You" Now- do you guys think the color lavender was just a color they both like, or were these lines a result of the influence of Bukowski?? Or does that color signify something that I am not aware of?? Later!! And by the way-if you ever run across a Bukowski book I STRONGLY recommend it, the guy is AMAZING!! Are we really going to start gettting this picky. I mean come on, who really cares who she thanks and how she thanks them. For all we know the thank yous section is thrown together at the last minute. Really I think it's pretty obvious that she's thankful to her fans. Just because she may not put it on every album doesn't mean she isn't thankful. - Miguel Rodriguez - ----- Original Message ----- > And.. I went over and looked at the computer games. I saw a rodeo video game, bull riding actually. You can either play as the bull or as the cowboy. One of the many cowboys featured in the game is Ty Murray Jewel's boyfriend. Yep that one, that very one. He's featured on the cover of the game and it says "7-Time World Champion" You can actually play the game as Ty....I found it rather funny, in a I can't believe it kinda way.
