Hello All! I just wanted to let you all know about the new and much improved www.rockontv.com This is a great site to learn when music related programming is on TV and who it involves. It is updated daily. The site now has a search engine so that you can quickly find out when a specific artist or band is playing. Now there is definitely no excuse to not know when sombody is on TV. Take Care. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Dec 1999 22:14:26 CST From: "Richard Russell" Subject: * RWTD Soundtrack I was just wondering if anyone has listened to the RWTD soundtrack. I was contimplating on buying it, but if the only good song is Jewel's, well it may not be worth it. If anyone has heard it, send a review to me please, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone knows when RWTD comes out in Canada, specifiacally Saskatchewan, fill me in. - Richard (a mere mortal to Jewel) ------------------------------ Date: 2 Dec 99 22:03:27 MST From: Greg White Subject: * life uncommon video, where? Hi all. I'm a little distressed. Er, I was REALLY looking forward to the Jewel home video coming out on the 30th that I went to the mall RIGHT afterschool. I checked HMV, Tower, Sam the record man, A and B sound, Music World, and future shop. No luck. What is up with this? I'm so dissapointed, the sad truth is that with Christmas coming, I really can't afford to order it from the Jewel store, pay S+H, pay american dollars, pay outrageous taxes etc. I'm really dissapointed. You'd think that if Bibi and the others worked so hard to make a movie, Atlantic (or who ever is distributing) could at least try to ship it out so people can actually BUY it. Sorry I sound so nasty, I'm just really dissapointed. I'll wait for a while and see if it turns up anywhere. If not, we'll see.... Subject: * Joy video track listing For those who have received the Joy Sessions Taping video.... I know the songs listed are those corresponding to the CD, but didn't Jewel sing other songs as well? I thought this tape was of her *whole* sessions taping, and not just the part that's going to be shown (has been shown) on PBS? I didn't see the PBS taping, so for those who did...is it any different than the video? And if so, then why aren't the extra songs included on the video, that she sang at the studio...those of you who attended the taping should know what additional songs she sang. I can remember seeing it somewhere....when someone posted....I remember there were several songs from Spirit...not just Hands...and I'm thinking even a couple maybe from the PoY CD. It makes logical sense to have the video parallel the CD, since their both "Joy", but somehow it was made to seem that the video would contain ALL the songs she performed at the taping. At least that's the impression I got...and I'm sure I'm not alone. Well we are working hard on the card and we are coming up with various ideas for the message right now. Since the last date for giving the card to Alan(Mr. BB) is the 18th and we want to have everybody's name on it earlier then that. We suggest DONATING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Just to ensure your name will be on there. Here is how you donate from alan's email: If you'd like to participate in the EDA "Giving Back To Jewel" HGH/Clearwater Project AND have your name listed on the "EDA Donation List" to be included with the EDA card we'll be giving to Jewel on Christmas, please follow the most convenient instructions for you: You can contribute directly to HGH/Clearwater either by mail or through the HGH website. You can determine what is most convenient. Here are the exact procedures to follow to be counted in the ongoing EDA total. PLEASE, follow these instructions carefully. If you do, we'll be able to periodically update you on how much the EDAs have contributed & provide the "card team" with an accurate list of all EDAs who participated. #1-For those who prefer mailing their contribution: You can send a check or money order. (Cash being sent through the mail is not recommended, but you can do it.) Please make any checks or money orders payable to: Higher Ground/Clearwater (Please DO NOT make them out to HGH, EDA Project, Jewel, or anything else!) Please write "EDA" in the memo line or in the mailing address as follows. Mail it directly to HGH at: Higher Ground For Humanity Attention: EDA (<-don't forget this line!) PMB #302 300 CVD #108A Carlsbad, CA 92008 USA #2 For those who prefer the ease of using a credit card for their contribution: Go to the HGH Website at: http://www.highergroundhumanity.org. At the site is a very simple form so that you can donate with a credit card very easily. Increments of $1, $5, $10, etc are already in a pop-up menu for your convenience. This is also the recommended procedure for all international EDAs wishing to participate. The cool thing about international EDAs using a credit card is that once you choose your amount, it automatically converts your withdrawal at the current exchange rate! Great, huh? If you don't have a credit card, perhaps an EDA (with a credit card) in your country can help you. IMPORTANT: The one thing to remember if you choose to use a credit card on the website form, is to please write "EDA" in addition to your name in the "name" field of the form. Please don't forget this one little thing! The HGH staff processing credit card donations know to look for "EDA" in the name field. If you follow these instructions, your donation will be added to the EDA total & to the list of names we forward to the card design team. We'd love to see this become an ongoing project & to eventually have EDAs contributing real "hands on" help with new Clearwater Project locations. For now, we'll continue to keep an ongoing total running for all EDAs who follow the above procedures & depending on how much money is raised, perhaps the EDAs can adopt a specific location. We'll keep all that open for later discussion & let you concentrate on this particular project for now. If you guys have any suggestions or questions about the card or message please feel free to email me. Also try not to weigh down Alan with so many emails, because in the end he forwards them to me to answer anyway. So happy Jewel Loving, Chandini V. "I feel very blessed, really fortunate to get this opportunity," she says. "It also was a very horrifying experience, one where that dream often became more like a nightmare. The 25-year old singer/songwriter is equally candid during interviews for director Ang Lee's "Ride with the Devil," opening Dec.17 at the Cedar-Lee Theatre. This recounting of the Kansas-Missouri border fighting 1861 is a grim and often brutal testament to a nation on the verge of turmoil. But how did acting newcomer Jewel come to play a compassionate young widow for Lee, one of film's most celebrated young, directors ("Sense and Sensibility," "The Ice Storm")? She's glad to answer ... >> Did you seek out the role or did the filmmakers seek out you?<< I'd been having a lot of meetings with directors, looking at a lot of scripts, but I was touring about 355 days a year, so the timing never worked out. (Later, she laughs and says that schedule is down to about 330.) The casting director thought I'd be right for the part and I got free to do a cold reading that I think was terrible. Somehow, though, this really great director saw there was something to work with. >>And what makes Ang Lee great?<< In my case, the performance you see on screen was really his. Ang knew I was an unskilled actress. He knew if I was going to do any kind of good job, it'd be up to him to train me --- and he did. >>Then, you jumped right in?<< Not at all. The first day, I stunk. I didn't know anything about the technical side. Ang said, "Hit your mark!" I thought he meant an emotional point, but he meant hit the mark, like where to stand. I remember calling him that night and saying, "I think you might've made a really bad decision because I've let you down." Fortunately, he didn't let me go. >>You seem insecure about acting. Why pursue it?<< I like the challenge, I like trying to pull off something new. Besides I'd grown so complacent in my music that my learning curve was down to nothing. For someone at such a young age as myself, it's unforgivable. >>What was most challenging?<< Those first two days of shooting, even though Ang prepared me for the acting as much as he could. The other thing was adjusting to the rhythm it demands. I was used to waking up at 7 at night, going on stage at 9 and exploding, then being dead by midnight. With acting, you have to sustain that level of energy all day. It demands a diffrent rhythm from anything I'd been used to. It wasn't until Ang told me to approach it like an arc that sense of pacing really clicked in. >>How do you perceive you Sue Lee character?<< She is very tenacious, very proud. You see her come of age, going from an insecure woman who is practically begging the man (Skeet Ulrich) in her life to stay. She is awkward, young --- scared. Then, when you see her later after she has her baby, that uncertainty is gone. She has a quiet reserve, a stength that carries through. >>Is there anything about being a singer/musician that makes you a natural for acting?<< Writing has prepared me most because you're always working at figuring out a character that will get into your audience's minds, it's subconscious. I've done that since I was 6 years old, so it's just a natural process. As far as performing in front of people, remember that there are a lot of artists who are very shy. they may be able to sing on stage, but don't ask them to talk to the audience. >>One of your songs, "What's Simple is True," is in "Ride with the Devil." Was that intended?<< I was reluctant. I thought it would look stupid, confusing the issue of singing vs acting, but Ang insisted. He said, "Look, I have a lot more to lose by YOU looking stupid in MY movie. So, if I want this song in, then it's going to be OK." And, it worked out fine. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Dec 1999 03:17:33 EST From: BlissNangels@aol.com Subject: * donations Okay EDAs, I'm heading the card design right now. Subject: * Re: donations I'm sorry if I come off sounding insensitive, but what exactly IS the problem? If there truly are 3,000 EDAs, and the majority of you really thought this project was a bad idea, why didn't you speak up before things got rolling? I would be interested in hearing from the 2,850 or so of you that haven't yet donated. Are your funds so limited that you can't afford to send a single dollar? When I first heard about this project, I thought that most EDAs would give at least five dollars. I was obviously being naive. The only excuses that I can think of for the total donation not being AT LEAST $15,000 at this point is 1) There are actually 300 EDAs, instead of 3,000 (2) You don't care about this project (3) You are completely broke (4) You have somehow been misinformed about how and where to send donations (5) You are incredibly selfish (6) You are young and your parents won't let you donate. Can anyone else think of another reason? Personally, I hope the answer is #1. Anyone else care to give their opinion on this? How about the small number of you who HAVE donated. Don't you feel a little disillusioned at this point?
