I'm a member of BMG, and Spirit is the featured selection this month. Here's what they have written about Jewel and Spirit on their website...I just thought you guys might want to read it. By now, the extraordinary story of Jewel Kilcher's ascension from living-out-of-her-van California troubadour, to multi-platinum industry icon has entered the realm of myth. What's often lost in the threads of her inspiring tale of perseverance is the fact that the Utah-born, Alaska-bred singer/guitar/slinger has evolved into one of today's finest songwriters, a truth that's evident on her most recent outing, "Spirit." A lesson in folk-rock savvy from beginning to end, Jewel's sophomore set exhibits musical growth while affirming her command of the contemporary pop dialect. Throughout "Spirit," Jewel adroitly plays up her strengths, namely her cooing, multi-octave voice, her boundless compassion, and her whimsical outlook. Self-reflective numbers like Jupiter, Kiss The Flame and Enter From The East are delivered with the same sort of irresistible, pie-eyed capriciousness as her breakout 1995 hit, You Were Meant For Me. On the other hand, the solo-acoustic Fat Boy, the uplifting Life Uncommon and the "hidden" track This Little Bird (with vocals from Jewel's mother Nedra Carroll) are broader in scope, less introspective and more globally reflective. Sweetness and light aside, Jewel proves that when the occasion is called for--as on the hit single Hands--she can rock solely for the sake of rocking. On the almost surly Innocence Maintained, the typically sweet chanteuse plays a tougher, more gritty role, a pleasantly sharp contrast to the bulk of her songbook. Delivered with a throaty growl that would likely put a smile on Melissa Etheridge's face, Down So Long is probably Jewel's meatiest three-plus minutes to date. On her debut, "Pieces Of You," Jewel introduced herself to the world as a wholesome yet sexy gamine; hard to resist, impossible not to love. On "Spirit," those traits still remain, but she has added to the picture with the kind of qualities--diversity, fire, smarts--that are the earmarks of long-term superstardom ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Dec 1999 00:07:19 EST From: Spiritcc33@aol.com Subject: * Re: What if..? In a message dated 99-11-29 19:16:26 EST, you write: << Everyone gets bored @ doing the same thing over and over again, but they eventually find out what their heart wants them to do. >> The only reason she may get bored... is because Jewel sometimes feels...that thru her music ... she is not benifiting someone... I remember reading something...where it said...that sometimes she feels theirs no hope left... because she feels like her carreer (which is not even a good name for it...); her talent...touches no one...like it does her kind soul... I think she feels like it is a constant monotonous process... but even though it is... she needs to feel the feedback... the soulfullness she puts in.... She may find something else but I think she will truly stick to her "TALENT"... because she needs to feel it. Its the sweetest drug for her... Thats all..:) Bliss & Hugs *~*Spirit*~* ( The Blissfull Angel ) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Dec 1999 01:18:52 -0800 From: "Jeremy Mull" Subject: * Jewel on @Home Hey there good people, How's it going? If you're ISP is @Home then under the pop arts section of their home page there's a huge section on Jewel. For those of you not part of @Home not to worry because it's actually just one picture and links to other regular old websites. Part 1 (long) OK angels here it is... sorry this is so long, but I wanted to cover everything that might cause some confusion or irregularities... remember this is just part one... the final and decisive one comes December 15th, but it's just as important to participate here to push your favorite music ahead! Last year I decided to try with a slightly bigger poll than usual... and the responce was great... it totally went beyond expectations... people thought it was a great idea and votes kept coming in and the result can be seen on my totally outdated homepage: www.geocities.com/Paris/Metro/2009/edas.html but that will come in part 2... Now this year I decided to totally expand this "poll"... and turn it into the EDA Music Awards... and if this goes at least as well as last year's Best Album Of The Year I will definitely make this an Annual thing and EDA Music Awards 2000 will turn into the 1st Annual EDA Music Awards... I've present this to some of you out there and asked you for your thoughts, ideas, suggestions etc and there were no complaints so some new categories were born and the way to vote has changed for some! So here's how ALL OF YOU can participate: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ THE RULES AND GUIDE TO PARTICIPATING IN PART 1 OF EDA MUSIC AWARDS 2000 1. Send me an e-mail with the maximum of 5 nominations for each category below. 2. Here it is not important to send the list in the order of your preference... nominations are equal and it makes no difference if you list them in the 1st or 5th slot!!! 3. And remember ONLY albums released in 1998 and 1999 and songs off those albums that were not released or any other song that was on the charts THIS YEAR are eligible for this!!! So you CAN'T nominate albums like: - Surfacing - Sarah McLachlan - Pieces Of You - Jewel - Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette - The Wallflowers - Bringing Down The Horse etc... However if there are some resonable circumstances I'm willing to make exceptions, you just have to write the reason along with the vote... for example... My Own Prison by Creed was released throughout Europe in 1999 so of course it's acceptable to nominate this album. 4. You can vote for any category you wish, you don't have to give nominations for all of them... and if you wish to give only one, it's OK, just no more than 5. If you send more I will only consider first 5 and if you can't think of 5 titles you can always write what you can think of now and send me the rest later. If you can't think of the album or a song title or something don't worry just send a brief description... like: the latest album by ??? I'm not saying I know everything - but I'm pretty much into this and last year it was easy to resolve the "riddles" :)) 5. Of course you can send your nominations 'til December 15th!!! 6. --> The address to send them to is: k4fr0010@kiss.uni-lj.si - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. When sending me your nominations... PLEASE use the format following- these rules!!! - - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. There's also a question of what album or song fits in what category! Sometimes it can fit in more than one... and I'm just gonna let you decide how you feel about it. If you wanna nominate Metallica's S&M as the best Country Album Of The Year... go ahead I will accept your vote, and if other people agree hell it can even win for all I care. It reflects your (and mine) opinion and taste, if that makes us silly, stupid or whatever... well so be it! Furthermore if you want to nominate an album that doesn't fit in any of those categories... like a Funk/Jazz/Classical album... you are welcome to create your own category and send nominations, if I receive more such nominations I will do my best to find a category or more most suitable for those other albums. 9. From all the nominations, 5 with most votes will join the 4 major categories and be there for you in part 2, to directly vote for. 10. No e-mail address or voter's name will be passed along to the SPAM-O-MANIA or CHAIN-ME-HAPPY mailing lists. For the best in spam and chain letters you have to be good and work hard throughout the year and who knows I might mention your name to Santa! 11. Only residents of the "3rd rock from the sun" are eligible to enter this poll, and it must be sent from a terminal on this planet. Last year somebody voted from the satellite orbitting around Earth and I just had to accept that as well... so yeah you can vote from Earth's satellites as well, but only the artificial ones... we don't want any votes from the Moon (cause Martians have supposedly taken it over)... there's only so many nominations for Tom Jones one can handle... and 12. If you don't vote you have no right to send me hate mail!!! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ HERE'S THE FORMAT FOR SENDING IN YOUR NOMINATIONS: (please use it, to make my life easier:) ) First write the name of the category the following nominations are for! The cathegories are: Best Folk Album Best Folk Song Best Rock/Alternative/Metal Album Best Rock/Alternative/Metal Song Best R&B/Soul Album Best R&B/Soul Song Best Rap/Hip Hop Album Best Rap/Hip Hop Song Best Pop/Dance Album Best Pop/Dance Song Best Country Album Best Country Song Best Soundtrack Best Song From A Soundtrack Then write in 1 to 5 nominations in format [#] [Song/Album Title] [Artist] Here's an example for a person who'd only want to send 3 nominations for Best Rock Album and 1 nomination for Best R&B/Soul Song: - -------------------------------------------------------------------- Best Rock Album [1] [This Desert Life] [Counting Crows] [2] [The Distance To Here] [Live] [3] [Hey! Album] [Marvelous 3] Best R&B/Soul Song [1] [Bills, Bills, Bills] [Destiny's Child] - -------------------------------------------------------------------- OK... again sorry this is so long... and I hope I didn't forget something!! Send your nominations now and make your music taste matter! THANK YOU, - -- Have fun and stay beautiful Dr. RomeAntic, an angel with the worst stroke of luck and a flash of silver lining "And now you know that I suck at this, and you suck at it too And now we're nothing more than vampires in love" Marvelous 3 / Vampires In Love / Hey!
