I think Jewel picked a really great movie to start off her film career. She didn't have a huge role but she was important to the balance of the story and did an excellent job (mostly - the first scene she was in was a little off but other than that she was perfect). But i have to say that I love Ang Lee's style. He doesn't use cliched camera angles (like unnecessary closeups of victims etc etc) like most war movies. Many war movies do that because they want to jerk tears but he just tells it the way it is and lets the characters and the situation speak for itself. I thought it was a really interesting look at the civil war. and it brought up so many interesting points about the motivations of the people involved and the desperateness of the situation especially for the people in the south. Anyway... we were talking to Ugly Phil (who is a DJ here and semi-celebrity and we are close friends with his co-star and so he knows us).. and a secruity guard came over to us and tried to stop us from talking to him. Then we go, excuse me but we know him and are just having a chat to him... the security guard got all hefty and nasty and tried to move us away from Phil when he stopped her and said "no sorry they're with me and we'll go somewhere else if we can't talk on a public pathway on a public beach!" LOL... haha to the security guard!. And the confusion is intentional. The battles Lee stages are intimate clashes waged by neighbores on the Kansas - Mississippi border; far from the official Union and Confederate military campaigns; he sees war as philosophical debate, following in the big footprints made by Ken Burns in his epic documentary The Civil Was and Steven Spielberg in Saving Private Ryan. In this telling, all men are didactically created equal: The son of a poor German immigrant (To bey Maguire) is equal to the son of a rich plantation owner (Skeet Urich), who in turn finds his equal in a former slave (Jeffrey Wright) when all 3 fight on the side of the pro-Southern "Bushwackers." RWTD - based on Daniel Woodrell's novel Woe to Live On and adapted by James Scamus - is, like Lee's The Ice Storm and Sense and Sensibility before it, an elegant film.
