(rudolf couldn't play in any reindeer games cause he had a red nose) anyway, rudolf turned out to be like the most famous reindeer of all.... and that's kinda what happened to jewel. she took what made people think she was different, and she turned around and proved that the other "reindeer" were the real idiots. here's a new version of the great song -- rudolf was thinking that he might fly today, just to disprove what all the other reindeer say," and then, "rudolf's sensitive and he'd like to stay that way!" there's my two cents! emily "the wailing angel" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Nov 1999 00:11:37 PST From: "Darwin Cuenca" Subject: * E! Online Review for Joy Jewel Joy: A Holiday Collection our grade A- Artist / Band: Jewel (Folk Rock) Record Label: Atlantic Release Date: November 02, 1999 Producer: Arif Mardin - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Review: While it's easy to scoff at her sudden success (and recent poetry tome), Jewel shows on this holiday album that she's a more versatile singer than her regular albums suggest. Her clear-voiced rendition of "O Holy Night" is breathtaking, and the slightly scratchier sound she creates on "Go Tell It on the Mountain" works well, too. It doesn't all come off that well. On "Joy to the World" the choir-filled arrangements overwhelm Jewel's lightly folky leads, and "Ave Maria" proves way too daunting for her. But mostly the album succeeds, whether it's the striking duet between Jewel and her mother on "I Wonder as I Wander" or the lovely, Christmastime reworking of her own "Hands." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Nov 1999 06:06:15 -0500 (EST) From: Paul Mark Ward Subject: * Re: jewel in the UK > I read an ickle while ago about how some people think jewel doesn't like > the UK > and i agree. Hi all, I was thinking about all of the Jewel appearances lately and have been kinda frustrated because, speaking for I, myself, I live in a dorm and have classes every morning. I'm a high school musician and student so I need my sleep. As does my roommate so I can't turn on the TV and watch Jewel that late. I was wondering if someone could put together a compilation of Jewel appearances like Radio angels. Possible of the recent Jewel appearances in these past few months or through out the year. Jewel on Regis and Kathie-Lee this morning was cool. My only groan- it was too short(as always is the case when she appears on that show!). The first thing I noticed about Jewel, was the beautiful dress that she was wearing: a black dress with the HGH logo around it! She looked great! A little talk here on RWTD, a little talk there on JOY- the usual stuff. Then she came back and sang SILENT NIGHT. Cool! Plus we got confirmation of her new boyfriend(I've been away from these boards, so please forgive me if I'm out with the times! ;-) ) Heh! Stone Cold Steve Austin and Jewel on the same show- what a combo! Reminds me of the time the Rattlesnake read one of Jewel's poems on Conan O'Brien! later! I guess if they are aware of someone else's poems some of it could be used. If there's doubt about whether or not it was or is usedm you could sue her for money. I love your new album so much! The gospel songs are so beautiful and I think it's great that you work with your mom so often now. What's it like working with her? Jewel: Working with her is always really fun. K: Jewel, I'm a writer, and I've noticed that you have an INCREDIBLE gift for imagery in your poems and lyrics. Have you ever considered writing fiction? Jewel: I do write fiction a lot. A lot of my songs [are based on fiction]. Like "Don't" is fiction, and "Little Sister," and "Daddy." jnco_gir1:What was it like growing up in Alaska? Do you have a favorite memory? Jewel: Growing up in Alaska shaped my personality immeasurably. It's hard to pick out a particular favorite moment. When I think of Alaska, I always think of the landscape, and being able to ride my horse for endless miles. Al: Hi how are you? I was just wondering how you liked performing at Woodstock (where the types of music there were a lot heavier)? Jewel: I've always liked that. I love that kind of music to listen to, and since the beginning, I've always opened for Bauhaus and the Ramones, so I guess I'm getting used to it. The Chili Peppers are one of my favorite bands. Lauren: What do you think are the best CD's of all time? Jewel: The Replacements', "Let It Be", I like Rolling Stones' "Sticky Fingers." Anything by Nina Simone. I like Randy Newman's new record a lot. TIGGER3122: What made you choose "Ride With The Devil" over any other role? And are you considering being in any more movies? I chose "Ride with the Devil" because of Ang Lee. And also it was a great script, and it had nothing to do with music. And it would be really hard to pull off. I've been meeting with people about movies, but I'm primarily concentrating on music right now. Ladypoet: Which of the songs that you wrote/sing is your favorite? Jewel: On "Joy," my favorites were the gospel medley and "Ave Maria." Love Hewitt Fan: Is connecting with nature a big part of your writing process? Jewel: I would say yes. I think because of the way I was raised, the way I relate to myself has often been relative to the outdoors. To silence and open space. And one of the hard things about my career right now is the quiet. It's hard to create. It's been more challenging. Patty: What are your hobbies/what do you do for fun besides writing music? Jewel: I surf, and I team rope. It's like a timed event where you rope cows. And I'm a book nerd. TonDawg: Jewel, if you had to vote right now for president, who would you vote for? Jewel: Hmmm. I've been out of the country so much lately....It's hard. It always seems like you're trying to pick from the lesser of two evils. Fee89: Do you think female singers are under more pressure to be attractive (as opposed to male singers)? Jewel: Hell, yeah! As much as they say there's been a women's movement in music, our commerciality is still very related to our sexuality. But that is a lot stronger than men. Dvad: What was it like working with Toby Maguire and Skeet Ulrich in "Ride with the Devil"? Jewel: Really great. They're incredibly proficient, efficient, excellent actors. Shady_Lane: What projects is your organization, Higher Ground for Humanity, working on currently? Jewel: We have several. The one that just got launched is called the Clearwater Project. It's basically cleans up water in third world countries. Because five million people die each year of water born illnesses. And we're setting up the technology -- two in Mexico and one in Bangladesh for starters -- that will clean up the water, and will give the people the ability to bottle the water and make an income. s Scottman: Who are your biggest musical influences? Jewel: Musically, Edith Piaf, Nanci Griffith, Paul Westerberg from the Replacements. On my writing, Pablo Neruda, Nabakov, Bob Dylan. I could keep listing people... Max73: What did you start doing first: poetry or writing songs? Do you like one better than the other? Jewel: I guess I write a lot more prose and poems, but I wouldn't say I liked one more than the other. Fiona: Jewel, do you enjoy making music videos? Jewel: They're not my favorite thing, only because I'm usually way too tired to enjoy them. I think if I had a day off and did them, they'd be fun. VikkiDE: What's the most embarrassing thing that's happened to you while performing? Jewel: I'm sure something. One time in Australia, I forgot about half of the show. I just forgot the words to the songs, including "Foolish Games." I was rather pissed at myself, really. I finally brought two kids out of the audience, and told them I'd serenade them if they'd tell me the words. Sable2000: How has being famous affected your life? Jewel: Fame has affected every aspect of my life. It's been both negative and positive. And in the places in me that are constant irrelative of fame, have still been touched by a certain amount of self-consciousness, and self-evaluation. Obviously I've gone from being very poor to very rich. I've gone from being homeless to having my own charity. I've gone from being anonymous to having stalkers. fodor: How do you keep yourself grounded and in touch with your true self? Jewel: I think writing helps me as much as anything. Writing is like a meditation or prayer that constantly keeps me in touch with myself. So I never get too far from my center without noticing. Drew: What genre of music do you think your next album will be? Jewel: I'm not sure. It will be folk rock or country. yui: Do you have plans to make another movie anytime soon? Jewel: I would like to make one in the new year, but no solid plans. ren76: Do you think you work too hard? Do entertainers have to constantly keep in the public eye to stay popular? Jewel: There is a definite relationship between visibility and sales. And there are times when it feels like a constant run for homecoming queen, which I find exhausting. But my love of music and singing is strong enough and pure enough that I find enough energy to keep playing the game aspect. sfjbaird: Jewel, if you ever have the time and your on the Internet, do you ever look at the Websites the fans have built for you? Jewel: I have looked at them. I don't too often because I'm computer illiterate. Deirdre32: Jewel, I was at the taping of "Sessions at West 54th"...the best night of my life. Do you plan on working with Arif Marden in the future? Jewel: Arif will be doing several TV shows with me over the holiday season. uhhuh uhhuh: What are you doing for the millennium... New Year's Eve? Jewel: I'm performing in Anchorage, Alaska. gretchen: Do you have any new year resolutions? Jewel: I try and be good all year, so I don't have it catch up to me. I think I'll make anti-resolutions, like eat more, exercise less. AnDy VoLk: Jewel, I was wondering when and where do you find yourself writing most of your work? Thank you, Andy. Jewel: Anywhere I have time. The bulk of my time is consumed promoting music, and very little is given to actually being able to create. So on airplanes, in taxi cabs.... Ladypoet: When I see you giving interviews, you sometimes seem very shy. *smile* How hard is it to perform live for you, considering this? Jewel: On stage in my own shows, I'm very comfortable. On one-on-one interviews, or when I meet people on a one-to-one basis, I'm very shy. kelephantlove: Who did you look up to as a child? Why? Jewel: I looked up to my parents. And I still look up to them. I also looked up to Martin Luther King a lot. And revolutionary writers like Bolgokov. megare85: What is your favorite place to go to be alone and in peace? Jewel: Just anywhere where it's quiet. Foxy Roxy: Did you ever have stage fright? Jewel: I don't think so. I've been on stage since I was six. When I was young, I used to get the hiccups when I was on-stage. When I yodeled. Noelle: What advice would you give to someone who was trying to start a singing career? Jewel: A singing career is really difficult. I think that if you have a love of singing, it inspires you to constantly write and hone your skills. And I think as long as you concentrate on that passion and on always perfecting your skills, then the rest takes care of itself. And that as you become the best in your area, other people begin to take notice. I would just say dominate whatever area you live in. I would also say dream and pray a lot about it. Cause God answers prayers more than record labels. Shady_Lane: Your career has taken you almost everywhere in the world. Where's the best place that you've been? Jewel: There are some countries I love a lot. Ireland. Australia. New Zealand. But there are a lot of places I don't want to live, but I was glad I got to see like Asia. ThunderStorm: Do you ever long for the quiet life and just settle down and concentrate on writing only? Jewel: I do long for that. But I remind myself that I'm only 25. And while I grow melancholy for it, in reality I have a lot of time. Plus, had I never gotten into my career, I would've never had the opportunity for a quiet life. jill: Jewel what CD of your own are you MOST proud of? Jewel: I'm proud of all of them for really different reasons. R S: Do you want to have kids someday? Jewel: I'm not sure. I think about it. I could see myself going either way. easygoingm2: What inspires your poetry...in particular "Shush"? Jewel: Um, I can't remember [what inspired] "Shush." All aspects of my life end up in my poetry. My triumphs and my longings. I think "Shush" was about being tired of being on the road and longing for quiet again. Sweetie4eva: How do you feel about being an inspiration and role model to so many girls everywhere? Jewel: It's fine. I don't really think about it a lot. I think the best thing I can do is be really honest about my depravities, my shortcomings, and my insecurities, as long as my strivings for goodness. That's how I try to go about my life. It's not a burden because I'm not a politician. I don't have to fake when I'm in a bad mood. nate: You mentioned God a moment ago [in one of your answers]. What influence has your faith had on your music? Jewel: My music is an extension of my living. And in my own life, I have faced, as all people [have], adversity and heartache. And faith is the one thing has been the antidote which helps you rise against that which causes you to sink. yui: Have you ever thought about directing your own music videos? Jewel: I'm very involved in the concepting, and so I get all the creative enjoyment I want out of that. Beyond that I don't have any real interest in controlling shots or angles. Maybe when I get more time.... jellydoughnut:If you could go back into the days when you were just known in San Diego, would you? Jewel: No. It would also mean going back to being sick all the time. And having no money to get out of my car. I was glad to experience that, and there's definitely a lot I miss about it. But I feel very blessed I didn't have to stay there the rest of my life. Wooky: Are you ever hurt by the things written about you in the press? Jewel: The press was real hard for me to get used to. It's like being in high school again, except the people who don't like you are published. And they pick on what you wear and how pretty you are or aren't. And I find that very tiring. But one of the best things. One of the things I'm most proud of as an artist is learning to turn a deaf ear and write simply for the joy of writing. As I had done before I got into the business. uhhuh uhhuh: Would you rather play in front of 50 people or 500,000? Jewel: Either way. Both are really different and really fun. Jade: What is your favorite song to perform live? Jewel: I don't really have one. I like doing shows. I guess yodeling brings down the house. "Life Uncommon," too. ren76: If you had to have another career outside of the entertainment business, what would it be? Jewel: I guess a rancher. deityluvjewelyahoo: You've said before you are married to your job. How does this affect your relationships? Jewel: In the beginning years, I worked so much it was nearly impossible to have a relationship though I did manage to limp through. It's been a little easier now. But I think I'll always work a lot. So whoever I'm with will just have to like that. Dyo22: Which artists are you close with? Jewel: I'm really good friend with Flea from the Chili Peppers. He's a really dear, good person. Jewel: I gotta go. Thanks for coming everyone. "I'm a human in training." J.Kilcher ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V4 #674 ***************************
