Earlier today, Atlantic had a server problem for a few hours. It's working fine now. Give it another try. The video is real nice. This was filmed at the studio sessions for the album & takes you right into the vocal booth while Jewel was recording "Gloria". It all started on Memorial Day 1996, Jewel was doing the HFS (?) Festival in the Washington DC area. The Festival had two main stages....one had a considerably harder rock lineup than the other. Guess which one Jewel was slated to perform on? The hard rock stage! :-( Well, she followed Everclear, and was performing right before Cracker was to have a set. This is from a June 1st, 1996 post that first reported what happened: >Right after Everclear finished at 3:30, I snuck my way up toward the front >of the stage. Many people were leaving for a break, so I got as close as >15 feet to the left of the center of the stage, only 3 people back. As we >waited, more people crowded around, nearly everyone seemed to be under the >impression that Cracker would be out soon (they weren't scheduled until >4:20). People quickly lost >interest, and few even began chanting for Cracker. Two lines into the >third verse of PoY, a frisbee thrown out of the crowd hit Jewel moderately >hard in the left forearm and chest as she sang. She seemed to take a >second to decide what to do, then stopped, unplugged her guitar, and >walked right off the stage. I was in such shock, I can't remember if she >said anything, she probably muttered a quick "goodbye". She waited on >the side of the stage long enough for her guitar to be packed away, then >she was gone. > >I was a little disappointed no one from the radio station at least tried >to admonish the guilty person, or at least publicly apologize to Jewel. >I'm not upset at all she left, I feel bad that some genius hit her >(ESPECIALLY during such a sensitive song). I want to apologize to her >on behalf of DC area fans. When Cracker first came out 20 minutes later, >Dave Lowery (the lead singer) said "to the person who threw that frisbee, >who will save YOUR soul?" Sadly, Jewel was done for the day. To say the least, this happening, along with Jewel's FIRST Leno/Tonight Show appearance that week, compeletely dominated the list discussion for the next few days. That is, right up until June 6th. That was the day Hiranya (our THEN contact with Jewel's management) announced "the internet list concert" what was to later become known as JewelStock, the private show(s) that Jewel gave for this very list in July of 1996. Well, needless to say the list was ABSOLUTELY CRAAAAAZY with talk about JewelStock. It was quite chaotic. It makes a good read on a lonely winter night, if you want to read the online archives, head to http://www.smoe.org/lists/jewel/archives/1996 and scroll down to the second digest on June 6th, number 249 and continue on to July 19th or so. Anyway, I don't recall how, but somehow the topic (jokingly of course) came up on "how do we protect Jewel from frisbees during Jewelstock?". THAT started to dominate the list talk for the next few days. Then one crazy night in late June, to answer a list question on it, I conjured up a "JewelStock Frisbee Guard Duty". Being one of the co-organizers of JewelStock, I answered: >From: Mike Connell >Date: Wed, 26 Jun 1996 17:05:28 -0400 >Subject: Re: various postings, All Jewel related > >Mikey/schoon@thor.pla-net.netwrote: > > > I would like to be deputized for Frisbee Guard Duty during the show. We've got two $330,000 Frisbee Detectors (rented for $2000), >but they only pick up most Wham-o Frisbees. Eight inch red Wham-os and cheap >plastic imitations get thru.
